I was there. We (Final Conflict) played earlier that night. The Conflict guys were really cool and kicked much ass that night. I wish there was video of us playing that night. I think this may have been the night I had hundreds of leftover flyers in the bed of my truck that I had forgotten about leaving a trail gig flyers all the way back to OC!

Fuck yeah! Dude me and my old roomate had a couple of you guy's albums and 7inches. Back in our crusty days of speed and Red Dog! I lucked out and was able to catch Conflict finally in 2004 in Pensacola, FLA.. One of the best shows I ever went to. Even such a later date, we're old and tired.. Conflict sounded just as good as they did in their "Prime" on this video. Cheers!

This was a good live recording. It didnt sound this good being there...but it didnt matter as long as you didnt tangle with the skins or get your jacket stolen or get alittle sliced in the pit, or have to use the head, or be caught alone outside by the local gangs. Still, we were always there (81'-86') even if the lineup was garbage. Was always smoking hot inside. Bummer this smelly old dive burned down. Great to see all these Olympic and Fenders gigs being posted. Thankyou!

This was a fun show, Fender's was a scary place. By late 85 early 86 it changed a lot, all the gangs FFF, PUNX, NWOC, LB Suicidal, SS LADS, LMP all gathered there and caught each other. You can glimpses of Colin getting very irritated with the local trash being violent. He tried several times to break up fights...

I had no clue that in Britain it was similar to Germany. Man, if we punks went to local shows in Berlin, there were all the time these skins around...or we had the possibility to get sliced by some Turkish street gangs. It was al the time stress. So, to be prepared we started to train combat actions in the Virgin Park in Charlotte burg (North Berlin). Every weekend we met and trained martial arts to prepare us for the punk concerts.
I have to admit though, the british bands where very good, bbut the audiences were totally drunk or on pot. Many punks didn't understand that we had been in the defensive and thus had to train to intercept the right wing skins and the godamn street gangs at the weekend that were roming around and looking for people to stab. It was after a while no fun anymore, going to clubs, as the enemy had all the time greater numbers.
The scene fell apart in 1984/85. Heroin started popping up more and more.

I love this Increase the Pressure album line up: Kevin (RIP) on guitar, John on Bass, Paco (RIP) on drums and Colin doing the vocals. This video was recorded by Al from Flipside Records. You can see Robbie from A State of Mind onstage along with Mark from A.D.S. Very energetic performance by Conflict. 1985 seems like 5 years ago.

I've seen Conflict more times than I've had hot dinners this year, back in the day - I was at the Across the Decades 2000 weekender in Milton Keynes when they came out of hiding after those long 10 years, and actually cried a little bit when they first came onstage.. I've seen them a fair few times after that and was blown away by There's No Power Without Control in 2003, but they haven't released anything since, they still gig, but it's not the same anymore, so I don't go see them now. Id rather stick with my memories, when I thought we could change the world with our Anarcho army.
.... we made history at the Poll Tax Riot tho :)

PERFECTION ! At least close to ! Love that T-shirt :Only stupid bastards help EMI ! In 1985 I was 12. I remember the Zammo Maguire story (in Grange Hill) very well. I had a serious sleeping problem at the time. Asleep at 4am , school at 08:50 but always late , and half asleep through all the miss-education lessons. This was the same time as the Zammo Maguire Heroin addiction story. Throughout the 4th and final year of middle school I was late pretty much every morning , Mon to Friday , of every week. We had morning Assembly every day because it was a C of E Scheme , and every day I was only 10 to 20 minutes late , so whoever was fronting Assembly (usually the Headmaster) would always freeze and stfu as soon as the door made its squeaky hinge , and from the front of assembly hall he would dramatize his looking to the back door as us late kids did 'the timid' into the hall to join the rest of the assembled school. It follows that if the Head is gonna make a scene of bringing it on top for us SCANDALOUS late kids ; then every other neck in the room ; 500 X 9 to 12/13 year olds and all the staff necks turn to look at YOU YOU YOU you you you u u u ! Not the biggest deal really is it (?!), but because it was every day for myself that I had to do the timid , I found myself being one of the most talked about kids - consistently. I soon developed that classic 'Don't give a fuck' reactionary attitude towards this petty bollocks. Meanwhile Zammo is missing more and more school , and when he is there its understandable that he also didn't appear to give a fuck...He was either gouching or rattling ! Every night I'm getting just 2 or 3 hours kip , I was too tired to give a fuck , and no subject interested me either. My folks where hardcore Thatcherites. They worked their arses off , taking advantage of Maggi's support for small businesses (Possibly the one goodish thing she did , though I admit I haven't put much analytical thought into it. No doubt there's scandal regarding this too ! That's how bad she was , if she did summat good there was surely a catch/ a price to pay by some other sect of society !) As a family we slowly stumbled up the ladder to - Materially speaking- Middle Clarrrse status ("don't you know!"). It was earn't mind ! Each 24 hrs for my folks was 16+ hr work shifts , microwave or take - away tea with a litre of gin & tonic , and all conversation out of work , was about work. I remember one day they expected me to pat them
both on the back and call them 'Right on' or 'Radical' , because they had taken on a 16 yr old black girl on the YTS / Youth Training Scheme ...they got a "sigh" . Haha - memories ! Being such ardently hardcore white middle class Thatcherites , who had 'worked hard' for all their soulless material egocentric trappings , I developed a big old baked potato on my shoulder (with Lumpfish garnish on the other shoulder) , plus , for extra attitude ; my balls had just dropped. From most peoples perspective , we ; as a family where looking 'Well to do' , but it was mainly mortgage and HP , at home and at work. Of course I'm aware I had it easy compared to...., that isn't the point of this ditty ! As a non too confident 12 yr old I just didn't appreciate that those peers of mine that had nice homes and houses but just not as big as our representation of fake wealth , had way more material shit and (ahem) pocket money which they did nix for , yet where utterly convinced I must have at least double what they had. Even then I didn't care about most of that shit eg: computers and brand name threads. While they where soaking up Madonna and Spandau Ballet I was taping John Peel. While they moaned about only £20 weekly pocket money and told MD I'm lucky to get double or more , in reality I was getting up at 05:30am Mon to Sat to do a milk round for £12 a week , which I got my first Crass record with.
So there's Zammo Maguire hooked on the gear , in the BBC kids classic 'Grange Hill' , and the ever so complimentary release of the single 'JUST SAY NO' , and WELL...that whole anti heroin marketing campaign of Bill Posters and Public Information films played during the ad' breaks for Coronation Street and Brookside ETC ETC. "I'm OK ,(SNIFF) just gotta bit of a cold is all. I'm alright (sniff) I can handle it". Even Brookside had itlessgigSmack story.
I was already late into school every day BEFORE I landed the milk gig , already half asleep through the crap lessons ! Obviously I was so much worse once I'd become a Milk boy. Still couldn't get to sleep til 3am. At first it was a running joke , most all the kids at school calling me Zammo Maguire and Smackhead. Over time though , everyone at school grew to take it seriously , and I maintained the 'Don't give a fuck ' front , except it wasn't a front. I wasn't mature for my age , physically or otherwise , but even though I didn't know the term 'Vacuous' back then , that was how I saw 95% of my fellow school kids.
The icing on the cake though was that I'd have my uptight and highly indoctrinated mother waking me up on the living room couch , at around 18:00pm when 'Neighbours' was ending (Bear in mind I'd only had 2 to 3 hours kip the previous night , which the Iron lady's ideal serf/my mother WAS AWARE OF !) screaming at me that I'm a Heroin addict. Most weekdays that happened. Unreal. That's how far gone she was !
ANYWAY , back to CONFLICT. During this time of anti heroin marketing campaign of 1984/5 , I remember seeing NEW MODEL ARMY for the first time. It was on TOP OF THE POPS. They did that 'No rest for the wicked ones' song in the TOTP studio. Btw , all this memory of mine is triggered by CONFLICTS 'ONLY STUPID BASTARDS HELP EMI' T-shirt ! The front man of NEW MODEL ARMY wore a very similar looking T-shirt to the Conflict T-shirt , EXCEPT the NMA T-shirt said 'ONLY STUPID BASTARDS TAKE HEROIN !' and cos if was BBC 1 at 19:30 he'd been forced to duck tape his T-shirt where if said BASTARDS. Haha. And who ,what label where the oh so refreshingly different NMA on ? Why it was EMI of course ! Massive props to Conflict for that !
And here we are witnessing how anti violence at the gigs Conflict where , which reminds me of Chumbawamba supporting Conflict at Leeds. Leeds University I think it was. Don't get me wrong , I wasn't at the gig , so if the following is wrong please do correct me. As far as I'm aware , Conflict where banned from playing in Leeds after this gig. I 'THINK' they where banned from playing in a few UK cities around this time. Not sure if all these bans stemmed from this same Leeds Uni gig with Chumba' supporting. So I've been told by a handful of heads over the years , of which at least 2 where supposedly at the Leeds Uni gig , someone in Chumba' , while playing their set , before Conflict , said ; halfway through their set , something unfriendly and shit stirring about students , SUPPOSEDLY riling up the non student part of the audience against the student part. From there it kicked off to the point of the police turning up to do their thing. I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IF ANYONE CAN TELL ME ? I take the above with much salt. Is the word IRONIC relevant here ? Just because two bands who exposed EMI more than most is CONFLICT and CHUMBAWAMBA , and then one of those bands signed to EMI , inspiring a great track by RIOT/CLONE and OI POLLOI.
I'd really appreciate if someone can get the fully true facts to me regarding this Leeds Uni gig during the eighties. Mid eighties I think.

Best gig of Conflict must have been the gathering of the 5000, Brixton academy,

I was at the infamous Brixton Academy gig but missed getting arrested/the riot afterwards because I was looking for my studded belt which I'd lost, I was right at the front and thought I was going to get crushed to death on the barriers.
I got the coach down from Newcastle and never went back home afterwards, I lived in Class War HQ squat in Mile End, slept in the same room as the old printing presses and sat folding the CW papers every night to earn my keep..
      Happy days :)

+Gary Thompson Conflict made me Think and Pissed Off. The Exploited made me want to fight (nazis)and get pissed. Two totally different sounds and messages. Not apples to apples imo.

The Exploited are U.K. punk legends just like Conflict both are phenomenal bands, watch the exploited live in leeds '83 gig, then maybe you'll change your mind about them.

Played at the "Skat'in Place", out in Saugus, CA. Stayed at GW's house....and were absolutely punk as fuck, and super polite as well. Wish they could have played at the "pig farm" with Oxnard nasties (rkl, stalag 13, aggression, ill repute) and local bands, OYM, and caustic cause, I still skate the insane asylum pool, in my dreams...

Saw them at Monte Paradiso festival in Pula/Croatia. Good gig, bad PA, cloged toilet, warm beer, dogshit everywhere

  • @sparhopper

This was a fun gig, but I liked them better when they played (a more accessible) Olympic Auditorium show. Fun looking back from a future I thought I'd never see!
Edit = _'More Accessible'_ means a larger space where you could move around more and see, and hear, the band from different spots.
