I've watched so many tutorials & have given up in frustration. This is the first one that's making sense! Thanks, man, you've stopped my brain from exploding.
Being a guitarist, songwriter, producer.... This keyboard had me beat. I own a dozen hardware synths but this one just seems insanely convoluted in this day and be age. You literally saved me from selling this beautiful sounding synth. Thank you. I'll be studying this.
Good lord. I've only had my Xm for a couple of weeks, but this video singlehandedly resolves a major workflow hurdle i thought i would just have to 'deal with.' So incredibly helpful-not sure i would have discovered this without this video. Thank you. This is a great method to make the Xm a 'simpler' synth to use, especially for people like me who are only 'occasional synth players,' and don't want to/don't have the time to delve deep into the ridiculous Roland architecture.
Now for me first thing I wanted to do and struggled quite a lot with, was to create a scene, with a couple of sounds that I could split on the keyboard to play one with the right hand and the other with the left. What I couldn't do is the assignment of the right and left hand keys, I don't get the logic of assigning the key ranges on the XM. I only succeeded creating the scene with two parts and assigning them to an external keyboard (Novation SL Mk3) that does the split. If you got better how to achieve this, I would be glad to see that in one of your next videos. Again, thanks and keep up the good work.
SoundsAndGear At least showing how to create a scene with 5 parts comprised of sounds of our choice and writing it in a scene preset would already be nice. I could actually do it but not really sure how and if I did it the most efficient way. Then splitting would be just about activating split and selecting the ranges, or using an external keyboard (channels 1-5). If you find the logic of the keyboard zone assigning for each part, this would really be helpful.
Just wanted to let you know I messed around with it this evening and figured it out, will look into getting a vid knocked showing the process. Shouldn't be a super long vid hopefully it will help.
Hi, thank you for the video, from my understanding, models are much like a way to organise your sounds for easy access on the XM, a bit like favorites but actually "groups of favorites".
Yeah, sort of, in terms of how you browse them. The "models" themselves are actually different engines they have modeled from their synth history. That's why controls change based on which model you use. Right now there are 6 (Jupiter, Juno, JX, SH, XV, and RD) considering all of the boutiques they've done, the plugouts, and other synths from Roland that haven't been modeled yet, there is room for quite a few. They have things like D50, Promars, 303, V synth, Gaia, their digital wind instruments, SuperNatural engine, System 100, SRX expansions, etc. Plus any new engines they come up with, quite exciting if they actually continue to develop the platform. Guess we'll just have to see what they do.
SoundsAndGear the D-50, TB-03, Promars and their TRs would definitely be a welcome addition. I bought the XM with the idea of reducing the number of synths (Roland Boutiques among them) in my setup. Would make of this the ultimate box grouping all their vintage sounds. Integra7 engine would also be killer of course. I know it’s gadget but I also miss the auto-pitch mode from my Juno DS. Quite fun to use !
@@alexandrosroussos The cool thing is that if they add more of the SuperNatural stuff then it would cover Integra. They already have all of the XV stuff in there. I know the Fantom has the SuperNatural synth sounds from the Integra already. Will be interesting to see how they develop these two, I can see a lot of overlap in sound, of course the Jupiter doesn't have a sampler/sequencer like the fantom so it is a bit different. Either way I'll be watching hahaha.
SoundsAndGear For the sequencer, maybe they could do some sort of it with the iArpegio edit mode. They already do it a bit for the drum part, if they could implement it on the synth parts and added some sort of « record » action, that would bring just enough sequencing. I personally sequence externally with a 1010music Blackbox so that my sequences can be used on any synth. Though it would be convenient to have a minimal sequencing option built into the XM.
@@alexandrosroussos Yeah, I'm not concerned with a sequencer on this, just saying, that's one of the main separators between the Jupiter and new Fantom. Sound wise I can definitely see them overlapping and/or having the same things. I heard Roland will add these Jupiter model engines to the Fantom at some point...interesting to watch for sure.
@@SoundsAndGear Yes I agree. nothing wrong with the size. I actually prefer this size because I came up playing old synths like the Yamaha CS01 and Yamaha DX100. I'm still going to get this one. the sound is too great.
I hear ya, I can see both sides. They do have the Jupiter X coming out this year for those that want a full size. I'm really interested to see if they add any more sounds/models to this unit via updates.
I personally kinda like the size and weight of the XM. Don't forget this is basically a module to which they added a mini keyboard rather than a shrunk synth. On the other hand, I would have probably bought the X, if it didn't weight 16Kg, no seriously, did it have to weight so much in order to include a 61 keys keyboard and a few more controls ? My Juno DS weights about the same as the XM, I would have accepted up to 8Kg but not more as I want to be able to carry it around easily.
Hi, thanks for making creating and sharing this video. I'm wondering if the Jupiter Xm can let you chain sequences. What do you think about its sequencer? Thanks!
Thanks for watching! You don't have to customize it if you don't want to, it's already setup, but if you want to change how it looks you can. Otherwise it's just pressing the model button to get into the browser.
Oh no worries, it's all good, everyone has different workflows! Always good to have these discussions at it may spark new ideas and/or features for the future. I'm really not a fan of requiring software to control/edit hardware. I actually think the browsing is pretty quick here, it's just the customization that takes some time if you want to customize it. I don't know that setting up menus in software, at least the way this synth is laid out, would be all that much faster. You'd probably still have to go in, choose the banks, choose the categories, (probably from a list, drop down menu, or tag cloud, etc.) It would just be with a mouse instead of a knob. I could definitely be wrong, but that's just how my mind looks at it lol. But of course, that's just my personal preference, doesn't mean everyone should look at it my way at all.

I don't use splits much, but I'll see if I can figure it out, I'll have to mess around with it a bit.

would love to see a video on the step sequencer!

I'm really feeling the sound. I only wish Roland would have went with 49 keys. but it's still cool.
Yeah I feel you. I'm actually diggin the size, a lot of sound in a small space. I wouldn't be mad at a full size 49 or 61 key though.

Thanks for watching! Honestly I'm not sure, I haven't messed with the sequencer at all.
Say if I assign 3 or more category’s to a bank how do I change the category within that bank it only goes through the first category I choose
It should go through all of them as you scroll, I no longer have this so I can't check it but that's what it did for me
Thanks for this buddy. Really helps. When you talk about saving your user tones, do you save them as scenes or as tones? Seems confusing to me.
Glad to help! If I'm saving a single tone, I save just the tone, if I have a bunch of engines layered I would save it as a scene.

Oh man thank you for this. I’ve had this synth since day one but wasn’t sure how to change the category settings
No problem, glad to help!

Joe does this synth have CV in and out.
no cv on this one

Jupiter xm or Korg wavestate?
I don't know, I haven't used the Wavestate but from what I've heard I probably wouldn't compare them. I do dig the full size keys on the Wavestate.
both!
