I met someone that had a pet skunk that he rescued and had de-scented. There was a while when people wouldn't walk on the same side of the street as him or dance slow and close. That aside it was an absolutely adorable friendly critter. Loved everyone.

Fantastic pets. Mine lived till 7 years old, they were really playful and cuddly. Naughty with food. Had to put a footstool in front of the fridge otherwise they would open it and go for cheese, pizza, anything they weren t supposed to eat. Couldn t open a package of chips in peace for the time I had them as they would get off the bed( yes they wanted to be on the bed or sofa, denying them wasn t an option) every time I came home with grogeries cause they wanted to know what goods I was hiding from them😂😂🤣🤣

I found 5 wild baby skunks under my shed. Their mother had passed away. I took care of them until they got old enough 2 take care of themselves. They were so so soft!!! They would ride around on my feet when I was barefoot but only 2 fit on each foot so the 5th would chase me & cry. They never sprayed me once & I still know where they're at & still see them from time to time

They have a bad reputation for a reason 1 they smell awful no other way around it. 2 they are one of the few animals in the us that still carry rabies. 3 they have a tendency to always be at the worst place at the worst time. I love domestic skunks but they are hated for a reason.

This is good info. I rescued a little guy who got seperated from his mother for several days during roadwork in the area. He was falling down starved. I put out unsalted nuts. There is one rehabber in the area who takes skunks. I am going to let her know that if she has one that cannot be released, I will take it.

my late aunt rescued skunks, squirrels, raccoons, and a bunch of other kinds of animals. as a kid i got to hold and play with the skunks, and i can say that they are very squishy and they are also usually pretty soft as well. they can range in size but some are smaller than you would think. one of them named Precious loved to cuddle, and another one named Wheezy was very pretty cause she was light brown and white instead of black and white. i love skunks so much!
My fluffy girl is almost 9 years old. While she's as happy and spry as she was at 3 years old, I know the time is coming soon. It sucks, but I'm getting in as many memories as I can. Skunks are amazingly loving animals when raised with good humans.

Domestication requires hundreds, if not thousands, of the generations of selective breeding. 60 or so years of captive breeding and a handful of color mutations does not amount to domestication. All pet skunks still retain basic characteristics of their wild counterparts and their genetics. Don't get me wrong, skunks are awesome (I almost adopted one myself once), but just because someone gives something a label doesn't make it true.

Descenting a skunk is a very invasive procedure, and is inhumane. It is illegal in the UK, and should be in the US as well. Unless you want your skunk to have a chance of having an anal prolapse.

@hope4everymoment its similar, not only because of pain. both happens under anesthesia, otherwise the animals wouldnt hold still, but they usually dont receive pain medicine afterwards when waking up and as any human that got surgery can tell, getting cut open still hurts on its own tremendously for at least a day or two. however thats the same as when you would neuter a pet, so if it was necessary you could justify it. the reason skunks are "descented" is, so they cant use their only fighting mechanism they have, even when scared or threatened for their remaining life and many people argue that, if you think an animal is that dangerous to you, you should not keep it as a pet rather than unarm it. in my opinion, its probably less bad as declawing because cats dont only use their claws when they feel threatened and if you keep a skunk in good condition, it hopefully wont feel the need to use its glands anyway - but as soon as people use special words to hide something cruel like descenting, its a sure sign that they themselves admit that its wrong what they are doing and that only to keep a wild animal as a pet. there is no single benefit for the animal.

Back in the 1990s up in very Northern Wisconsin my future husband & I were driving to dinner. This area is remote and there isn’t any kind of fast food or chain restaurants.You have to drive 45min away. Only a few restaurants within 15min of my family cabin. If you’re hungry & didn’t want to make something yourself 95% of the time you went to a bar. That’s how I was raised from 4yrs old Anywho…. As we are driving to dinner we slowly down and even stopped to look at a Mama Skunk 🦨 and her 6 babies following her in a line along our road. Absolutely freaking adorable 🥰 ❤
I actually saw a wild skunk once when I was a kid. It was pretty mild-mannered, and didn't even approach me. Skunks only spray when they feel threatened, so I made sure not to present myself as a threat.

Back in the 1990s up in very Northern Wisconsin my future husband & I were driving to dinner. This area is remote and there isn’t any kind of fast food or chain restaurants.You have to drive 45min away. Only a few restaurants within 15min of my family cabin. If you’re hungry & didn’t want to make something yourself 95% of the time you went to a bar.
That’s how I was raised from 4yrs old
Anywho…. As we are driving to dinner we slowly down and even stopped to look at a Mama Skunk 🦨 and her 6 babies following her in a line along our road. Absolutely freaking adorable 🥰 ❤

I actually saw a wild skunk once when I was a kid. It was pretty mild-mannered, and didn't even approach me. Skunks only spray when they feel threatened, so I made sure not to present myself as a threat.
