Mate your review is on point.. i own these and love them. The whole bass thing I did notice, but actually now i don't miss it.. the soundstage, comfort and detail are huge. The bass i would not say is lacking, you just miss out on the resonance, but with increased resonance comes distortion.

Thanks for this review, I have been looking at these to partner my Naim SN3 for late night listening.. These sound very similar in presentation to my ATC scm19's which I love so well worth me auditioning.
The HD800 need proper amplifiers and if you’re lucky to have the HDVD800 that is literally made for these headphones then you’ll have an endgame setup (depending on your taste/wallet).

Great review thanks, if you do try the 820s please let us know. I am like you and think I have a preference for closed backs as you say just more substantial bass and imo a better experience, some closed backs are considered to be as open as some open cans as well. Im constantly looking for the perfect headphone and really getting into my headphones recently. It's a different experience but in some ways better as its a more critical listen and easier to get ultimate audio affordably which you can literally throw in a suitcase as well. And there's details you hear in headphones that even the best high end speakers sometimes fail to capture, but as I said to be fair it is a different experience.
Thanks Terry. Very thorough review. Headphones are a funny one for me. I love good quality open-backed 'phones, but I realised that I rarely use them. I find that once a stereo system is set up correctly my room, it doesn't matter how good headphones sound, they can't beat the sound you get in a room. I still would love to own a great pair, I have the HD 58X from Massdrop and they seem sufficient for now. Although I don't have the best headphone amplification to get the best out of them, and it seems unlikely to improve in the future, as I'm waiting for the right time to get the Hegel H120, right now. I wish I had the money to buy the Manley Absolute headphone amp, that thing made my HD 58X sing, when I tried it. :)
Hi terry great review, funny enough I own a set of hd800s and the lcdx. One thing that for me fixed your 2 bug bears with the 800s was a set of dekoni ear cups. It made the headphone much much more comfortable and increased the width of the bass response too! I find these with the dekoni much more comfortable than the ldcx due to the crazy weight! I also wear glasses and find the lcdx irritating with the glasses on with log listening sessions. Anyway great review take care of yourself :)
Great review on the HD800s. I just purchased it and waiting for it to deliver to my door step. Not sure my dac+pre-amp set up using the Bifrost + Lyr do anything better to this headphone. Or should I get an balanced amp for this headphone?
Two other things that make a big difference about full size very high quality headphones is the way they sit over your ears. Some can be adjusted they way they sit closer or away from your ears, which totally changes the sound you hear fuller or thinner etc, and the dynamic of the sound etc. The source component and different types of headphone amplification has massively different changes across the sound quality spectrum you hear, tube, class ab, class A etc, and the amount of sheer power of authoritive power, the power behind the power, including bass end power with all the sheer harmonic detail and speed ability left intact. The sheer power with power behind the power with speed and detail lies within the capability of a components instant speed of transfer power supply reserve of power capabilities they can produce with detail layering across the whole sound spectrum etc. So just a full hifi audio system every thing can change the final sound spectrum, power, authority, including detail layering across the whole frequency sound spectrum that can be heard and be produced. So just like the chord dac amplication might have the most detail and separation of sound, but they are not known for the sheer power of power behind the power of dynamic capable sound whether they might have all the detail and separation abilities in the world, etc. Dynamic authoritive power of sound with Power behind the power of sound authority with detail across the whole frequency sound spectrum, comes from having huge reserves of power supply capability along with an instant accompanying transfer of capable transient speed with detail ability, been able to translate the detail and dynamic of sound detail from the power supply's abilities of lots of instant dynamic current power supply with an instant speed supply ability with its detail retrieval capability. This kind of authority of power with detail is just not really possible though through switchmode power supplies, no matter how high their power rated ability is, like in chord's full size amplifiers, and no matter how many capacitors they can stuff into their casing. Also in chord full size amplifiers they do not even have the lowest electronic noise floor possible or even the highest signal seperation that is possible in audio amplification, which basically they are only very average in this respect, and in no way is that impressive or anything to write home about either, and neither is listening to them compared to some other amplification either. This means that in their using their switchmode power supplies which was is supposed to lower a components electronic noise floor does not really work highly and effectively in chords whole electronic amplifier component design, as their noise floor and separation is only very average, no matter how fast their sound may be. Better sound with quality can still be had and possible even with traditional and older technology in amplification at least. It sure is always a new technology driven world, but it is not always the better for it, because in some respects it can be far worse instead of better that it is touted to be.
You can see by their frequency response what kid of sound they are going to have, defo influenced by the system gear but the designed in sound will only give so much - its tailored very much a certain way
@@PursuitPerfectSystem yes I know what you mean, but it is amazing that some other source component and headphone amplifier could in reality can still give even more heft as well as retaining details and harmonics with even more authority, etc, in the whole sound frequency response eminating from the same headphones, just like in hifi systems, even if they are supposed to be lean in frequency and bass etc. Given another source and amplification could still give more heft and weight to balance it out so that it would be just enough heft weight and speed etc. I have experienced this kind of balancing act quite a few times, especially when you play a good bass heavy track, and you hear the speed and punch with harmonic separation of detail. Also if they were bass heavy to start with, this means bass distortion would set in much earlier even with more power provided, because the drivers are not large in size, as compared to a large multi driver loudspeaker, etc, as this is the pro's and cons of smaller driver technology. But anyway in changing the subject I have a pair of master and dynamic 65's for my phones, and a pair of avantone planar pro headphones for my astell and kern media players, as they do not spotlight or deviate any particular part of the sound frequency response. No uplifted spikey treble and no exaggerated bass etc, just balanced in equal measure across the frequency spectrum.
Boy Terry, you really delivered the good, & the not so good on the 800 S. Additionally, you are right on regarding open vs. Closed back headphones. Generally speaking, open back headohones are for low to mid volume critical listening indoors, in a quiet environment. While, quality closed back cans are enjoyed at mid to high volume pretty much in any environment. Thanks Terry.
I think it was important to talk about the bass delivery as it is - for some audiophiles this would be the best headphone bass they have ever heard because its very on point and note perfect for the tonality they are going for - its not the same tonality I am looking for which is why closed back is generally my preference for heapdhones :) Cheers David
Good video. I own the 800S, Audeze lcd-x and Focal Elex (mass drop version) the the focals show up both headphones at 1/2 the price. They sit in the middle for bass. Much more than the Hd800s but more rolled off below 30z than the lcd-x. The sounds stage is smaller than the 800s but still pretty good for headphones. Much better than the audeze. So ... the Bass after all that is not that good then ~ which for Dance music 'of any kind' is bad news with little or no foot tapping going on sounds like shame its where 90% of todays music lies if your young or young at heart ~ its a 'serious' headphone like a studio reference to pick apart the music like Jaz Classical (or to me 'old fart' music, £1400 price now seems a bit (lol) expensive ~ the DT 1770 pro seems more interesting, and at 1/3rd of the price
I like the DT1770 pro a lot they live on my head for more hours than anything else but the HD800s show you everything that is wrong about them which is a lot, but the bits that are wrong are forgivable at £350. The bass is excellent from the HD800s its not as a full sounding and as substantial as is ideal to me and how some other headphones do it. This is true for most open back headphones in my experience which makes sense when you think how small the drivers are and they have not cabinet as such to help them out with producing deeper bass. They are def worth the money because of how exceptional they are in the areas I discuss in the video and I thought it important to explain about the bass so people know what to expect and whether they should consider the closed backs instead depending on what they want
@@PursuitPerfectSystem Thank you! my music is serious in my life my hi fi system took years to build to where i like it now very much .. and so ANY audiophile Headphones for late at night listening or monitoring, need to at least get my feet tapping and for that a tuneful deep bass beat i feel is important (btw, the beyerdynamic Amiron Home were/ are top of my list
I am considering / likely to buy the Amiron Bluetooth in the next few days and I will do a comparison to the DT 1770 pro in a future video, I hope its around the same quality but have no idea
If I was going to criticise the DT1770 pro - they are thick in the lower mids and vocal region - this can be ok or it can be a little oppressive and hard on you ears depending. I still prefer them to the Audeze LCD X and Audioquest Nightowl - the NightOwls were similar but a bit more fuzzy sounding

the ear piece looks like a grenade
So ... the Bass after all that is not that good then ~ which for Dance music 'of any kind' is bad news with little or no foot tapping going on sounds like shame its where 90% of todays music lies if your young or young at heart ~ its a 'serious' headphone like a studio reference to pick apart the music like Jaz Classical (or to me 'old fart' music, £1400 price now seems a bit (lol) expensive ~ the DT 1770 pro seems more interesting, and at 1/3rd of the price
Jazz and classical are timeless and for all ages.
Crap Headphone Design. They are the ugliest headphones on the market. The sound could be divine I would never buy them.
