- The Sisters of Mercy - Marian (Full Version/ Old Grey Whistle Test)
The Sisters of Mercy - Marian
Footage was taken from the Old Grey Whistle Test Show on April 2nd, 1985. The original sound was replaced with re-edited studio track from a limited 7" Whistle Test Studios vinyl, limited 1000 copies were made and was released in 1988 by the Poison Door Record.
Lyrics:
In a sea of faces, in a sea of doubt
In this cruel place your voice above the maelstrom
In the wake of this ship of fools I'm falling further down
If you can see me, Marian, reach out and take me home.....
I hear you calling Marian
Across the water, across the wave
I hear you calling Marian
Can you hear me calling you to
Save me, save me, save me from the
Grave...
Marian
Marian, there's a weight above me
And the pressure is all too strong
To breathe deep
Breathe long and hard
To take the water down and go to sleep
To sink still further
Beneath the fatal wave
Marian I think I'm drowning
This sea is killing me
I hear you calling Marian
Across the water, across the wave
I hear you calling Marian
Can you hear me calling you to
Save me, save me, save me from the
Grave...
Was ich kann und was ich konnte
(What I can do and what I could do)
Weiss ich gar nicht mehr
(I just don't know anymore)
Gib mir wieder etwas schönes
(Give me something beautiful again)
Zieh mich aus dem Meer
(Drag me from the sea)
Ich höre dich rufen, Marian
(I hear you calling Marian)
Kannst du mich schreien hören
(Can you hear me calling?)
Ich bin hier allein
(I am here alone)
Ich höre dich rufen, Marian
(I hear you calling Marian)
Ohne deine hilfe verliere ich mich in diessem Ort
(Without your help I am lost in this place)
I hear you calling Marian
Across the water, across the wave
I hear you calling Marian
Can you hear me calling you to
Save me, save me, save me from the
Grave...
Marian, Marian, Marian
Marian, Marian, Marian
Hey future person, I'm from 2023, if you're listening to this this and found my comment, I wanna tell you that you have a very unique taste, greetings for all sisters of mercy ,god bless Andrew eldritch
God bless
This has got to be one of my favourite sisters songs.
Was always mine
Mine too
ME TOO
This and Emma
My all-time favorite of theirs too
Hussey's guitar work, Eldritch's voice and Adams' bass - bloody perfect.
Don't forget Gary Marx on guitar.
Insuperablesssss juntosss
I've always loved the spidery guitar work right after the chorus.
Eldritch looks literally amazing in this. And I love the guitars and the bass, amazing.
😁
Don't forget the Dr

watched this back in 85 and this changed my life. This is the best ever version of this song as it features Gary Marx playing the Ebow Guitar. On first and last none of the others play on it as the writer of the song Wayne Hussey played all Guitars and Bass. This was Gary Marxs last ever performance as he played this Old Grey Whistle Test Performance and went off to form Ghost Dance. The very night before at the Brighton Gig with the band he climbed onto the Pa and threw his guitar to the ground and stormed off. Gary Marx does not get enough credit for his time in the band. He wrote the music for 4 of the bands best ever songs. Nine While Nine. Heartland. Some kind of Stranger and First and last. Oh and Poison Door.
Thanks for info, I only noticed his playing in this vid even tho I've watched it so many times, I was only 10 but I remember the atmosphere of the time in Dublin: My estate was mainly Metalheads though one side of the surrounding area had lots of Punks and Goths, and the other was more Mod, Ska and Skinhead....it was a smorgasbord of great music, much of which I still listen to today. The Sisters definitely stood out as one of the leading alternative bands of the time along with New Model Army. I just soaked it all up. Cheers.
Eldritch really didn't appreciate the class around him, Marx and Adams and Gunn were just as responsible for the "classic" Sisters as he was
Always listening to this in school...I love it.
Wonderful amount of darkness. And his deep voice is awesome.
How in the fuck is it that 18 people were brain-dead enough to dislike?
I`m with You.Marian is being supported.
You should of seen how unpopular we were listening to it in the eighties!
@@Zachnav Oh yes, still hated now.
@@Zachnav Still does. When I sit at a stoplight cranking SOM now 30 + years later, I still get death stares from other drivers. And cars behind me back away.
There IS a "satanic vibe" to the uninitiated...

Have you ever been in love, so deeply it's all you had but then you find there is nothing there but memories and distorted perceptions? That's what it's about.
This is by far the best sounding version of this great song.
Andrew Eldritch sounded amazing here. This is my favorite version of this song.

Was never really a massive goth fan, but first and last and always is an incredible album, every song is good.
As is Floodland.
"Was never really a massive goth fan" - Andrew Eldrich
I love listening SISTERS OF MERCY
great performance, great songwriting, One of the best bands ever.
One of the most romantic songs I know, performed brilliantly.
The Sisters had evolved from being a very good band in 1983 to only two years later becoming a rock outfit for all of us to marvel at with their groovy ghoulie spooky psychedelic imagery and the tongue in cheek manner which it was all served up, while never failing to deliver compositions which were nothing short of shimmering jewels.
To the shame Eldrich represents today.
Andrew Taylor, retire already to your golf course in Kiel.

I caught my mother dancing to my video of this when I was 17 back in 1988
Incredible; saw them on their first tour, god I was only a kid myself. Fantastic memories. Gives me chills listening to this.
84 I saw them - they were awesome - Aylesbury friars -- great rock band - met Wayne H afterwards walking about the venue when everybody had gone home - he must have been about 21 !!!!
Στην λευκη με αγαπη αλεξανδρος 1991 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Absolutely Brilliant...Loved The Sisters of Mercy xx
who dont...?^^
Still loving this ❤
Awesome Marian version ,
and everybody is here.
The Sisters!
I think its the best sisters tune ever
The song just came to Hussey in the studio and he recorded everything right there. But when Taylor heard the tape, he initially didn’t like it. ”Sounds like Siouxsie & The Banshees”, he said. Hussey left the studio, devastated. Next day when he returned, the engineer said ”listen to this”. He pressed play and through the monitors came ”In a sea of faces …”. Given that it could take months for Taylor to finish the lyrics for just one song, this was remarkable. And even to this day, he has to sing ”Marian” on every gig.
His voice makes my mind insane
🎶🎹🎵🎶..absolutly perfekt..Sound. 🎶🎵..Ich hör dich rufen marian...Kannst du mich schreien hören...🎶🎵🎶..
"Gruftie"..😘
Perfekt is ( i'm going to take a guess here) korekt.
Ive always loved sisters of Mercy!!!
I'm getting this signed!
What a fantastic outrageous wonderful magic band the Sisters once were. Galaxies above average!
Never grows old.
Remember this first time around & seeing The Sisters on their first ever Tour...Most fucking excellent !!!
Wow amazing version
I absolutely ADORE this song. The lyrics are so beautiful.
I always like the "gothic gunslinger" thing they invented. The look like desperadoes from hell.
I remember that there's a Twilight Zone episode where one of the cowboys is dressed in all black. It was bound to happen.
The Dark Tower
😂😂😂
Johnny from Guilty Gear
Ruadh MacBradaigh I love your analogy of Leeds. Lights is a lot closer.
THE best Of Gothic ROCK....🖤😎
Love this version!! is amazing!! full of darkness
When Goth music could really bite . Andrew could sing and with Hussey and Adams- Brilliant !
I miss those days
The mission IN the sisters of mercy was the greatest combo ever, wish i were alive back then
he can't escape the goths after this song...sorry, Andrew.
perfection best goth band that chenged ways and still sounds great perfection
They may need to fix Google translate.
with fields and bauhaus under the top 3 goth bands...
ups... cure of course too... then i took ASP too and we could say under the top 5...^^
Sisters are not a gothic band. You need to stop this. We are not hearing anything "goth" here. Andrew himself has already put an end to this foolishness of "Sisters is a gothic band." They never were, the people who adopted their deep sound in the Gothic style.
@@dhchefe Opinions, we all have them.
A beautiful timeless classic , 🎩🕶️🎵xxxxxx
personally: best darkwave song ever made!
This is music from outside of this...material life
Best version !!!!!!
The sea is killing me.
Happy to say I recorded this on my video player on the date it was originally aired and lets just say it was a revelation. Changed my life in a good way!
One of my favourite songs of all time.
Once heard never forgotten!!! That voice will haunt me till I die ❤
I’ve never tired of this tragic, perfectly romantic tune. It was one of the first songs that I could feel throughout my bones as a kid and it’s just as emotive for me now; lovely and unique
Whayne and Andrew are the best together at the 80 music
I saw them in Winterthur! Many years ago!
Absolutely fantastic! Oh, the memories it brings back......
what a performance, have to revisit this every so often, get my fix.
so original true pioneersxxxxx
i saw them in concert around that time and it was fabulous, and it was the first time i heard that song and instantly i fell in love with it...
I think this is my favorite song
perfection.
I’ve never seen this version before. Scrumptious ...
I miss my ex dancing to this at the Electric Ballroom in Camden... Must be 20 years ago!!!!
Electric ballroom what a great place bouncers a bit dodgy but brilliant nights like nowhere else.
Awww... I miss London
I used to wander in there after going to gigs in the 90s in London(I'm from Dublin) and I always loved that the main floor was Goth even though I was a Metalhead, I'd spend more time on that floor anyway.....still listen to this regularly.
@@Murph1308 was that the place with balcony and leaky roof.
THE SISTERS OF MERCY + THE MISSION
OMG - say what you will - I was introduced the The Sisters of Mercy by my sister's boyfriend and played the hell out of the cassette. Later i went on to like the The Mission UK and saw them in Boston in the mid-80's. Little did I know of the relationship. I always loved music - may it be a little blindly
I saw that tour at Tenax in Florence.. a great date..
One of the very best recordings of this track fantastic end
the sisters are unique, so great!
Oh this really takes me back. I saw their last gig at the Albert Hall in London. Loved them.

THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL BAND
Ma come si può esprimere un “non mi piace” di fronte ad una simile opera d’arte?!? Provo pietà per tutti coloro che lo hanno fatto; sono solo poveri ignoranti. Non capiscono nulla né di musica, né di poesia...
Gary Marx, King of the ebow!
its my favourite of all time
