It was just over two centuries ago that the global population was 1 billion - in 1804. But better medicine and improved agriculture resulted in higher life expectancy for children, dramatically increasing the world population, especially in the West.
As higher standards of living and better health care are reaching more parts of the world, the rates of fertility - and population growth - have started to slow down, though the population will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.
U.N. forecasts suggest the world population could hit a peak of 10.1 billion by 2100 before beginning to decline. But exact numbers are hard to come by - just small variations in fertility rates could mean a population of 15 billion by the end of the century.

Hey brother
A glass is actually a very good metaphor for population capacity. The capacity of the glass(population capacity) keeps changing as industries develop and basic goods are more readily available, increasing the pop cap. When the water(population) exceeds the capacity of the glass, water spills out(lots of deaths). Our challenge is to increase the volume of the glass in a sustainable way.
But an overflowing glass doesn't mean deaths. It merely means that your glass is too small. Maybe next time, use a big wash tub. Or a swimming pool. Plan to grow better.
@@yosefmacgruber1920 i feel like you dont understand what op meant. He's just praising the use of glass and water to represent the population and what certain implications mean.
@@therabbidt
Well I like the analogy also, however, I very much dislike how misleading that perhaps it was meant to be. Most any analogy has its limitations, for example, as a pro-lifer, I would rather that the "population bathtub" be naturally overflowing over its side and the water flowing all over the floor and down the steps. Because why-ever should human populations be limited to some tiny little area of the planet? So you can see then how that analogy is already failing and isn't entirely even relevant.
Bigger drinking glasses is the obvious fix, but then the demonstration would seem less dramatic? Well maybe it ought to be less dramatic. Well at least they didn't overflow the glasses, but still committed that statistical sin, by implying that they could be about to overflow. Population alarmist liars, love "overflowing" graphs, because they oppose their fellow human beings, following their father the devil, the father of disrespect and lies. Yet any decent statistician knows that an overflowing graph merely means that it wasn't scaled properly.

It is because there are so many more parents now. It is not so much, they say, that we are having so many babies, but rather that there are just so many people now having babies.
I am very pro-life, and I believe human populations should grow and spread naturally without any nasty birth control to hinder. There are places all around to put more people.
Yosef MacGruber "Nasty Birth control" Are you serious? Birth control is one of the greatest things we have.
*****
What is so great about it? Birth control is unnatural, awkward, and aims to prevent human life. Many people won't use "artificial" methods due to the awful side-effects, or due to religious reasons. Until a half-century ago, birth control was hardly even heard of, and people pretty much let babies happen as they happen.
Imagine no religion? Does that include getting rid of the false religion of evolution/atheism? What then does that leave? Emptiness? Nothingness? Do people not believe in anything anymore? How sad. What then, do they live for?
Do I see the twin towers in your profile images? Sorry, but it seems we can't blame that upon the violent and intolerant Muslims, who seem to be a handy scapegoat these days, if 9-11 was actually an inside job. The government/media story makes no sense. The conspiracy theories explain what happened, better. Check out the book, by Dr. Judy Wood, Where Did The Towers Go? It has some interesting stuff, and a lot of photos.
Yosef MacGruber OK, you have shown yourself to be a complete anti-science idiot. I believe in many things that have been scientifically shown to be true. Religion is predicated on ancient fiction written by men who lived in tents. Lastly we need to prevent births in this world and birth control is a great thing!
*****
And why do we need to prevent births? That sounds like a Malthusian or evolution theory/atheism religion-based assertion? Yet you just mocked religion? The science has nothing to say, towards any supposed "need" to limit births. Evolution theory has never been proven. Climate change used to be global warming, used to be coming-ice-age. The theory keeps ever changing, so it has never been proven. Overpopulation theory has never been proven. I know enough science, to know when wicked anti-freedom NWO elitists are inserting stupid political opinions, under the guise of science, and thus mocking science by their crafty deceptions. I love science, so I will call them out on that, when I catch them doing it.

Africa and Asia really need to calm down...
africa has low population density, it's Asia and europe that need to curb their population size
+Ndoli Sabi Europe has half the population of China
Jules Ortega nevertheless, europe comes after asia in terms of population density and has more than twice the density of africa.
Europe is self-sustaining and has stable population for decades now. Africa and Asia are not. They're breeding like rabbits and are causing poverty, resource scarcity and possibly conflicts in the future.
You should wonder what happened the last time population masses moved in unison to other inhabited areas for sustainable environments.
There will be war for water, energy and food in the distant future. This is the mathematical inevitability of having uncontrolled population booms. Rabbits start dying out after they overbreed, since some of them cannot find food. They're also hunted by predators.
On the other hand, we're intelligent beings motivated by self-interest, and we have no predators controlling our population. Figure what will happen once the bubble bursts.
mpogias13 europe and the west in general consume resources and live less sustainable much more than any other population in the world. for instance: a single child born in the US will 13 times damage to the environment than 12 kids born in the rest of the world. africa has the lowest consumption of natural resources or impact on the environment compared to the west. efforts should focus on the biggest polluters, consumers and destroyers of the environment

The world become a truly inhospitable place if there was 15 billion people on this planet. We are fucked if the population grows to 15 billion because even at "only" 7.25 billion, the planet's biosphere is completely collapsing. With twice as many people, the planet's life support systems will completely collapse. And we might end up living on a barren desolate planet.
Unless mankind realizes that infinite growth in consumption and population is impossible on a finite planet, there can never be true happiness. We have been pursing infinite growth in population and consumption for far too long. End the infinite growth paradigm if we are to survive as a species.
Amanda...we will not get that far...seven billion plus right now, and next is fumigation time...how much population the world will lose between 2017 and 2064???...lets see...one billion death, will make practically no difference and will fix planet earth for a very short time, two billions will do a better job but not a fix for longer than a century or so, but twice that?, four billions??, will do a big fix for centuries and centuries to come...remember that when 25,000 people die a day in planet earth, there is way a bigger amount the ones that born in that specific day and how many die today at natural causes, famine , killings and wars???...there is always a bigger amount to be born, but when fumigation starts fully, in 2017 and ends by 2064, the world will be at a mere 3 billions and then, no later than 2064, we will be able to analyze our resources in 2064, and see, if we can let the same amount of babies to be born a day, compared to the deaths on the same day...but for right now, this is way out of control and that is the only and more important reason , we will be engage in WW3...the way the West do this planing have no equal and we, Americans and Europeans have our populations under control very well, but the rest of the planet, proved how disrespectful they are toward worlds population and world resources...if you are a young person, you will live long enough to see in the next 50 years or so, how mighty right Joe Molinaro was...remember...I TOLD YOU SO...
Joe Molinaro
you are right. The world will never even have 15 billion people because we will not be able to produce enough food to feed 15 billion people. We are already having a hard time producing enough food for 7 billion people, so what makes you think we will have enough food for 15 billion people? We will never be able to produce enough food to feed 15 billion people because the world has already ran out of arable land. We are at peak arable land. And we can't improve food production per acre of land either. That has also been maxed out. The world population might be able to grow to 10 billion, but that's about it.
AmandaNerdBot But have we forgotten medicine?/ We probably wont even reach 9 billion without medicine
AmandaNerdBot Worthy thoughts, but population and consumption are different cases. Most people consume very little, a minority consume lots. And the people whose numbers are increasing tend to consume least, as will their children. Population won't hit 15 billion: births are about to start coming down while we've ever more elderly reaching the end of their time. World population's taking care of itself though it'll take time, but consumption by the better-off among us will spell disaster if we don't rein it in or shift rapidly from material to other pursuits.

When my Parents were born in 1959 there were 2.9 Billion People in Earth. Now its more than double.
I hope that Africa, India and some other places also get their birthrates under control, or this will result in even worse famines and deseases.
Europe cant take more people from Africa and elsewhere, it already has a very dense population.
The world population needs to grow even human-denser, because more and more people would be glad to live.
I very much agree with the huge numbers of people who have objections to birth control. People are supposed to multiply.
Malthusian principles lol. As a nation gets incredibly dense, its population will eventually have to stop increasing due to raising kids simply becoming too expensive in that environment. Birth control and better gender equality being introduced into developing nations also reduces severe population growth.
@@campbellblock3061
How are you so unaware of the ridiculous "overpopulation" theories? The more old-school thinking was that humans perhaps solve problems too well, and so an old textbook of mine claimed that "at the current rate, we might soon all reach standing room only conditions". Well if that is all that we had to worry about, why even bother to worry? It is not going to happen anytime within our expected lifespans, nor that of our children.
Actually, advancing technologies should reduce the cost of most everything, including that of raising children. But the expectations go up, and now suddenly all children need their own smart-phones and computers? Not long ago at all, a family could share such things.
Do you not realize that huge numbers of people have objections to birth control? So hadn't we plan to grow at least somewhat human-denser worldwide?

TPCWorld - Top 5 Space Videos!
Why do you think that God will give everybody 6 children?
But many large families were not originally planned that way. What often happens I think, is that they just had their 4th child, and still haven't gotten around to choosing a "satisfactory" method of birth control. They may not even realize that their family is starting to get really large. And by the time they have a large family, it is too late, and they find that they have gotten used to large family life, and seem to like it.
Yosef MacGruber Please keep that religious shit to yourself thank you very much.
TPCWorld - Top 5 Space Videos!
Please keep that Malthusian anti-people BS to yourself. Thank you very much.
So let me get this straight. If a family or parent says that they want to have 6 children, or they have 6 children already and they love them all, you disapprove, regardless of whether they cite religious objections to birth control or not? Personal choice doesn't matter to you, and religious faith doesn't matter to you either? So what gives you any standing to opine how many children other people who you do not even know, should have?

Malthusian much? I am obviously not a Malthusian. So pathetic anti-life Malthusian arguments are unlikely to appeal to me.
And what of the huge numbers of people who have objections to birth control? I find their objections to be quite valid, commendable, easy to understand. Surely people still have the natural and God-given right, perhaps even the duty, to have naturally-large families.
@@yosefmacgruber1920 Let me ask you a question, would you prefer 50 people living a happy life on a small island or 5000 people fighting over food and water on the small island and living a quite miserable life.
I already see what you gonna choose.

Malthusian much? False dichotomy much? Why can't large populations live a happy life? There is no basis for me to deny my neighbor having 8 children. Children come from God, are a wondrous blessing from God. Dissing having many children for no good reason, is actually rebellion against God.
I'm going to offer another solution to the question.
The answer isn't directly medical advancements or food production, the real answer lies a bit deeper: oil. At the turn of the 20th century our population exploded from 1.6 billion to as we know it now, 7 billion. Economically, everything revolves around oil, including better medicine and agriculture. And just as the worlds population exploded with the production and refining of oil, so it will fall at the same rate once we hit peak oil.
The interesting thing is there will always be plenty of oil, We produce as much as people are willing to pay for. Sure cost pre barrel goes up but technological advances make greater production possible. Most industrial nations women average less that 2 kids. Its the under developed world that is driving population growth.
The documentary Collapse (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collapse_(film) talks about this (oil being the reason for population growth) very fact. Oil is the reason for the population growth.
John Moore I admit I've watched that documentary a few times, but yea i agree with you.
oil is really the main reason for the huge population growth during the 20th century. What you see as oil became ubiquitious the population goes up vertically, growing at an exponential rate.
1:04 Europe had bigger population than Asia?!😳
That is "rest of Asia". Notice how significant the China and India glasses are.

Well, 11 years later we've already gained another billion. For the UN's prediction to be true that leaves 78 years for an increase of only twice as many .
