  • Recently EAA staff attended the opening of the B-17F Memphis Belle exhibit, which honored the first heavy bomber aircraft and crew to complete 25 missions over Europe during WWII and return home to the U.S. The aircraft had previously been on display in Memphis, Tennessee, for many years. It was acquired by the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in 2005 and had been in restoration until earlier this year. The opening coincided with the 75th anniversary of the crew and airplane’s 25th mission.

@Eric Eric No nothing inaccurate. To be honest I was a bit amused. You blame the Germans for trying destroy the free world back then and worship the bomber crews as heros who brought freedom and peace and helped destroying the Nazi system. And now you are saying things that would make little Adolph more then just happy.
Oh and the EU is quite a nice thing exspecially for your wallet but you will see this by yourselve soon.

So sad reading your comment today 3ys later. It's really a shame how NATO and the Globalists have driven this war in Ukraine to where it's at today. Since 2008, where NATO promised not to expand, then again in 2014 American funding to overthrow the Ukrainian government and hypocrisy in regards to it's own Monroe Doctrine.
It's the G.W.Bush, Obama/Biden administration, much of the EU leaders, NATO, the globalist UN, WHO, and the IMF are the ones who need to be tried for war crimes. They don't give two shts about Ukraine membership into NATO and their "collective defense" article 5. If they really did, the US & Europe would go in into Ukraine and clean out the entire Russian army in a matter of a week. This is all about Globalism and expansion. I can tell you right now, about 70% of the US population is sick and fkng tired of this leftist BS.

I was "somewhat" at the dedication of the Memphis Belle on Mudd Island.
I was "actually" in West Memphis where seven B-17's, P-51's with an assortment of other WW II aircraft on display.
On the day of the dedication I rode in the B-17 "Nine-O-Nine" when all seven B-17s flew from the West Memphis airport in formation and flew over Mudd Island and dropped rose peddles
The ride cost me a weeks pay, but it was worth every penny.

I lived in Memphis from '85-'88 and the Memphis Belle was sort of ragged looking and parked near a restaurant on Democrat Rd. The restaurant, I think, was called the 43rd Bomb Group or something like that and the airplane was sort like free advertising for them since it didn't belong to them.

My family had a special bond with one young pilot who lives in Canada now,in the village of Sawston each family “ adopted “ a member of crew to help them feel welcome and not home sick. Many a American crew member will remember the “ Red Lion Pub “ just outside Duxford. I still today tell the stories past down to me from my parents and Grandparents to my Children of the crews bravery and sacrifice. We will remember you.

I am 66 years old, my father was a staff Sargent with the Tennessee Army National Guard in Memphis Tennessee in the 1950’s and 60’s. I grew up seeing the Memphis Belle sitting on the concrete pedestal in front of the National Guard armory on Hollywood street my whole life. To me it was a great sight and memorial to the veterans of World War II. I am glad it was restored and will be protected at the Air Force museum, what really pisses me off is that it was not done here in Memphis !! It seems that my city has no need to preserve any type of history. They find money for all sorts of ridiculous liberal projects, but can’t seem to come up with one red cent to preserve any type of history except the ones that meet “their social agenda” ! Memphis doesn’t deserve the Belle, “THOSE WHO REFUSE TO REMEMBER THEIR PAST ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT IT.” Beautiful job and thumbs up to the Air Force Museum !!!👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

My dad was in the Tennessee Army national guard in the early 80s, but I believe by then the Memphis belle had been moved out to the airport, I was a cadet in civil air patrol when we had the largest number of B17s in one place since the end of world war 2 at the airport in west Memphis Arkansas for a airshow, they flew over mud island where the Memphis belle had been placed and dropped rose petals on her. I'm so glad the belle has been restored but hate that it isnt here in Memphis.

Myself and 4 or 5 of my buddies played in the Belle when it was in front of the armory when were kids. The pad lock on the rear door was broken and that's how we got in. We would play for an hour or so but before we left we would clean out the bird nest in the engines plus the dirt dobbers nest before leaving. For all the months we played no one every said a word to us about not doing the play time or clean up. At that time it was all there only the guns had been removed so we made our own out of broom sticks and pieces of 2X4. I'm 81 yrs old now and
those days and times are forever in my heart.

    • @BlackSheepModelworks
      @BlackSheepModelworks 6 років тому

If this plane had self awareness, she would not like to "rest". She would want to fly. These machines were not built to rest in a museum (or as I call them, a mausoleum). Yes they were built to fight a war. And so she did. And wether she was the first, third or even last to complete 25 missions, she did her job. But now she lives to tell her story. To help us remember all those brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve freedom.
And, I think, the best was to help us remember and honor those brave souls is for her to fly. Because after all, that's what she was made for.

Mark- I live over in Newport. A few years ago I had driven to McMinnville just to check out the B-17 that they had on temporary display at the time. As I was walking around the B-17, I noticed an older gentleman standing next to the plane by himself, and he was wearing an 8th AAF ball cap, and I wondered why nobody was talking to this guy, but people were instead listening to B-17 stories from a group of men that were either born during WW2 or after. I approached this gentleman and shook his hand and he introduced himself as Jack Spratt, and we laughed about the table of "B-17 experts"
During WW2, Jack Spratt had been a B-17 ball turret gunner and had flown 39 missions. He took me on a tour of the plane himself and it was probably the last time that I will ever meet another B-17 crewman again in my lifetime, and I soaked up every second of my time with him. His story of being shot down is on UA-cam. Sadly He passed away in April of 2018.

Robert Knight Morgan himself, at a air show when I was young, he personally signed a photo to me, my dad, and my brother, funny thing was he grew up in the same town I did, Asheville North Carolina, we listen to some of his stories, and they were interesting, one of them which if repeated today with the same aircraft would have the FAA in fits. while he and the Belle were on their war bond tour after completing 25 missions over Europe, one of their stops was his home town of Asheville, well he been given permission by Gen. Hap Arnold, to buzz any thing wanted at any time, so on their way out of Asheville, he decided he was gonna buzz down town Asheville, flying over boucatcher mountain , dropped down blanked the belle on her side roughly 60 degrees flying between county court house and city hall, rattling many windows including the USAAF weather office located inside city hall. and out the other side. well according to col. Morgan the officer in charge of the weather office was none to happy with that stunt and was gonna raise hell, gen. Arnold told the officer to suck it up and get over it, that col. morgan had his permission to do that.
if you go to down town Asheville today and look at the county court house and city hall, you'd say it would be near impossible to do such a thing, but trust me he did it.

I have memories most people don't have. I used to PLAY INSIDE the Belle. It sat on a concrete platform outside the National guard armory in Memphis. This was in the 60s and early 70s . The hatches were all open and you could go from stem to stern in it. Sit in every station. That was before disrespect became commonplace and before lawsuits were a way of life. Sadly, it became a thing to "get" pieces of the Belle, which led to it being closed up, then fenced off and then moved. But I'm 55 now, and I remember flying missions over Germany. ;-)

The first American bomber to complete 25 missions over Europe was not the famous “Memphis Belle” as commonly claimed, but actually the B-24 named “Hot Stuff”. “Hot Stuff” completed its 25th mission in February of 1943, which was over three months earlier than the “Memphis Belle” completed her 25 missions.
The second American bomber to complete 25 missions was the B-17 “Hell’s Angels”, but it wasn’t widely promoted due to its name. The “Memphis Belle”, which was actually the third American bomber to complete 25 missions, is often credited as the first because it was heavily used for public relations activities back home. Unfortunately, “Hot Stuff” crashed in Iceland under the command of Captain Robert Shannon in May of the same year. The "Hell's Angels" went on to fly 48 missions with various crews and was ultimately scrapped.

The Lanc was a very effective aircraft and could carry a heavier bomb load by virtue of the fact that it wasn't carrying anywhere near the same weight in defensive arnament, armour plate, ammunition and additional crew. Forts could lift similar but were designed to try and fight there way to the target in daylight. Imagine our dear Lancs trying to battle against the Luftwaffe with a just a few rifle calibre 303's and no co-pilot, no flak jackets or armour plate other than behind the pilot.

      Good points.
Both day light and night attacks faced the luftwaffe in completely different circumstances.
The night offensive was more down to technology countermeasures such as Radar and IFF. Safety in numbers was pretty much the only thing that could keep a crew alive.
The 303s against the nightfighter cannons were only a deterrent. Though they also faced the day type fighters over the cities in Wild Boar.

It's great that the Belle has been restored and is being kept in the museum, but to say it was repainted and restored to the condition it was in the day it flew its last mission is not exactly true.If it were, then it would be full of bullet holes and flak damage. On her last mission she was almost shot out of the sky.The crew barely survived and made it back home on a wing and a prayer, and with wounded airmen. The Army Air Corp kept it secret from the public for years, and used a different bomber, calling it the M.B.for their P.R.film back in the States. In order to boost morale and for recruitment. I'm an Air Force Veteran and I thank God the Belle and her crew made it home and that she's now on display for all to see. 🛫🇺🇸

After the degenerate population of Memphis vandalized it while it was on display at Mud Island, it was taken to a hangar at former NAS Millington where a group of volunteers, myself included, worked to restore it. Unfortunately we didn't have enough volunteers or resources to make steady headway and decided it best to hand it over to Dayton.

Was just as Wright Pat a few months ago and saw the Belle. B17s are still one of my all time favorite planes. My 14yr old girl took a real liking to the plane and the history. She even bought a Memphis Belle hoodie from the gift shop. We also just watched the movie and I felt like seeing some of the videos again.

The B-17 is the greatest plane ever designed, manufactured, and flown... and it's because of it's special role during WWII and all the men who flew them so bravely!
Above & beyond all others, the B-17 is special.

In 2005 my wife and I had the pleasure of being allowed to enter into the Belles fuselage at the Millington Municipal Airport in Tennessee. She had only arrived at this place weeks before it was stripped of everything internally and externally at the Jim Webb Restoration Facility. I think the fact that we are Aussies and shared the same surname probably got us in. I would have loved to see her in its completed glory one day!
