I think another big reason why CHrom fell off that's not really talked about enough is the rise of Cloud in the post quarantine meta, a much more consistent pick over Chrom that tends to beat the same characters he does while being a lot less fragile than him.

This is why damage "consistency" doesn't always mean "better character." Chrom is more consistent than Roy in terms of dealing good damage, but Roy has a much better recovery and his sours allow for a better combo game at different percents. Roy also has better mix-ups than Chrom. However, people favor "consistency" over actual spacing and stuff, so Chrom was a more popular choice than Roy at one point... which actually was bad for him in a sense.
Since Chrom was so dang popular, many players advanced the counterplay against him (the same is happening to Aegis). It will be a long time before Chrom does anything huge in the meta, but there's still hope for him. He's still a solid high tier in my book.

While i don't disagree with this statement. Why is Lucina said to be the better marth because she's more "consistant" in this same thought since a good Roy is more dangerous than a good chrom, same should go for marth no?
@ShadowKiller227 I'd say no. First of all the main reason why Roy is so much better than chrom is chroms shitty recovery. Second of all, Roy is still much more consistent than Marth is. Marth needs some good reads and a high level of execution with regards to spacing and timing in order to consistently get tipper kills. Roy not only does not have nearly as much execution difficulty since running into your opponent is much easier than precisely staying in a certain range but he has significantly more kill power. Side B requires no spacing and you can just get a tech roll out read and run at them and kill them at like 80 or something ridiculous. Marth side b requires meticulous spacing and timing to even hope you get a tipper and even then it kills later. Fsmash is the same thing. I don't need to space shit as Roy and I'm fast AF. I can get sweetspot fmash from a tech read, a jab, or a first hit of nair, it's so easy. With Marth I need to be at a very specific spacing for the tipper, it's not as fast, and if I want to combo into it I need to do it in during a specific percentage window and it's harder to land the setup dair or nair, etc because Marth is just so much slower than Roy.

It always makes me sad to hear people like Esam and MockRock talk about how if Chrom just had Roy's Up-B, he would be top 5. I think that's probably true, and it hurts because I mained him when the game came out but switched to Lucina (then later Aegis) because I was tired of getting gimped.

Everyone keeps bandwagoning and switching back and forth between Sephiroth being either broken or terrible, based on if a pro happened to win with him that month. My perspective? He's sick af. We have that in common, brother Chrom main.

Chrom's Nair not working isn't even exclusive to him. Lucina and Marth's Nair is even LESS reliable at times. Especially at high percents. This especially hurts Lucina because she gets most of her kills off of stray hits and Nair has the most active frames of all her moves. It really weakens hey kit tbh.
And to go even deeper, a lot of two-hit aerials that don't have auto link angles on the first hit don't work properly. Falcon nair, Gannon Nair and Sonic Up air are a few that come to mind. I really think all of these moves should look like Joker's Fair. He has ground-only hitboxes on Fair1 to combo with, but he also has Auto-link air only hitboxes so it connects better into Fair2. Is not completely perfect but it solves a lot of problems.
Oddly enough of the 4 double hit Spin N-airs, Roy is the one who has the broken hitbox in the sense of being oddly programmed with Weight independent knockback on the second hit instead of the first. If i had to guess is the higher hitstun easier spacing and being more intuitive with knockback.
But most importantly, WIK alters overrides the de-facto gravity and Fallspeed to the same as Mario from their regular numbers or the 1.8 if they were knocked upwards, making them inconsistent on combos you're rising. Chrom uses WIK on the first hit of N-air, while Roy due to a coding error on the second, and that ends up being better for Roy in both scenarios: It connects overall better and is a genuine kill move against superheavies.
I totally agree with you on Chrom. Although I don't main the character I do put time into him alongside Roy at a semi-competitive level (I know how to jair and such). I think he does excel as a counter-pick character especially against some MUs like Steve as his bair can get past Minecart due to lack of a sourspot (Similar to another commenter explaining why he does well against Samus).

Since his Chromicide was removed, he just has a worse recovery than Roy, who he plays very similarly too.

I'd like to know why you think Chrom has a better MU than Roy against Samus? Because Samus can very easily just invalidate Chrom's recovery with a well timed charge shot, something that she can't do against Roy, while the onstage game remains mostly the same, if not slightly in favour of Roy due to his better combo game and kill power.

@@COINLAUNCHERZ Yeah but Roy's sour spots aren't even bad, in fact he can get combos and conversions off them that Chrom can't. And his sweetspots are stronger and kill earlier.
@@WhitePointerGaming Not entirely true, Roy's only sourspot move that consistently combos is landing up air (although some of his other sourspots can lead to a tech situation so he still potentially has that over Chrom, though that's not a huge advantage when both have some of the best down tilts in the game). Roy killing at earlier percents is also kind of a myth; their kill power is quite similar outside of double-edge dance, but Roy racks up percent faster because he just does more damage than Chrom.
That being said, I still find Roy better in that matchup because aside from what you mentioned, both characters are going to want to rush her down anyway and Roy gets rewarded more for doing so. Roy's down tilt is also insanely safe on shield (-3 compared to -5) to the point where it can't always be punished by her up-B, which has a 4 frame startup.
Every Chrom plays with 1 foot out the door already.

the thing is chrom is still a solid high tier but there's just so many better swordies, mythra, roy, lucina, corrin, mythra, and shulk. Also like you said his really bad recovery holds him back.

so tl;dr chrom is not great in disadvantage n weirdly less consistent than roy. Idk man that character still feels free af sometimes, I just think some top 10 player needs to pick him up and ball with him
idk you have to consistently play so much better than your opponent for chrom to be good. He has the tools to succeed but you can’t leave a single opening out you could die, which is both incredibly mentally taxing and an unrealistic goal to achieve

Maintaining advantage with chrom isn't hard either honestly. If there was a hard part it's just getting out of disadvantage and neutral at later percent. Which is fair.
He's either super oppressive or gets oppressed himself. That kind of polarity makes him a pretty stressful character to play at competitions.
There's a Chrom in my locals that fluctuates between getting consistent top 4 or winning the whole thing and sometimes just getting eliminated early because he just got gimped too hard lol
Roy has similar enough neutral, potentially bigger rewards and a decent recovery.

Huh didn’t think it was that easy to DI Chrom’s soaring slash and nair. I do feel that if Roy hits the sweet spot of his nair, there is more endlag than Chrom’s.
I think Chrom players need to start practicing being comfortable in the air off stage. I’ll do a short hop back air to off stage into other aerials attempting to edge guard players and it scares them since they are not prepared for it. I’ve gotten some deep edge guards that way and defending myself to recover safely by saving my double jump and then mixing up the soaring slash timing

so chrom used to be good, but other players know the matchup now? so the reason you can't play chrom anymore... is skill issue? be real bro, chrom is better than roy in literally every way aside from recovery. his up b is a far superior out of shield punish. the only reason roys up b is usable at all is the super armor. chrom literally has multiple of the best moves in the game. there's no reason to lose with him. even if you get edgegaurded, the opponent can't hit you without risking getting scooped up by the up b, because as soon as the opponent gets close to hit you, you can up b them during their aerial and kill them.

@pedrogoncalves4585 when did I say his recovery is good? It's just not bad enough to where you can't win with him. Chrom is a really good character and if you are good at playing him you'll be able to recover without dying for free. Most chrom players are just garbage and they don't even know how to properly space his up b to avoid counters even though it's not that hard to do.

I personally don’t like him cause he’s just a boring looking dude. If anything, he’s the fire emblem character that’s just another fire emblem character. Marth has tippers and was first. Roy has fire and red hair and is the opposite of Marth. Lucina is a female swordie. Robin is mage swordie. Ike is heavy swordie. Corrin is part dragon. Byleth is a weapons master. Chrom is just a generic anime dude with a sword.
Lucina is literally the most basic and boring “other FE swordie”. It doesn’t make her interesting just because she’s a female lol wtf. And chrom at least has hype and consistent gameplay
