    If you really think about it, Martin has lost everything, even most of his sanity, so it’s understandable why he accepts everything.

      @DaedalusR 8 місяців тому +25

      Martins philosophy is summarized in his final words with Finn. Finn says “well i guess there’s no changing you” which is essentially “it is what it is” and Martin says he’s glad they finally understand each other. Martin just goes with the flow because there’s no inherent meaning, it all just is what it is, it’s whatever, no inherent “answer that will satisfy you” as he says to Finn. So why not? Which can lead to a perceivably irresponsible or selfish way of living, as the follower of this doesn’t put weight into their action, they just do what they want without care. Finn sees meaning in all the worldly things and chooses to contour experiencing them, Martin doesn’t so the offer of trying something new is easier for him to accept.

    I don't really remember what it was exactly, it's been a while, but there was something real poetic about Finn's dad just disappearing out of existence after all the emotional labor Finn put into him.

    • @christopherfeatherley
      @christopherfeatherley Рік тому +47

      I think you're referring to when Martin says something along the lines of "if you burn all the bridges, then the only way to go is forward" high lighting his care free, unresponsible lifestyle. To which Finn responds about how he will never understand or have his father be the father he expects, so he learned to accept how different they are.
      They both agreed that they'd never agree, which was very sweet/poetic 😁

  • @ArtsyHumanbean
    @ArtsyHumanbean Рік тому +207

    Martin was always interesting to me. The lack of responsibility, stemming from his fear of losing freedom, is why he is more of a child than Fin. And why his story ends when he becomes… nothing. Nothing is… the ultimate freedom?? Idk. Martin and Fin’s relationship and as individuals will always be so interesting to me.
    PLEASE dedicate a whole video, if you can, to grass-fin. If you can, they are one of my favorites and they are so complex ❤

      He's also a tragic figure as its heavily implied if not outright stated that something happens to him after him and Finn get separated if the flashback from the island miniseries is to be believed. He was a con man but never wanted to leave the island and had a good life that he enjoyed with Finn and his wife. He makes no mention of his wife to Finn and doesn't recognize Finn despite him being his first son and arguably his most memorable son.

      He didn’t become nothing though
      He merely dipped out of one construct of time to make his way into an alternate one and he will continue existing ad infinitum until he decides he no longer wishes to exist
      It’s sort of like our own situation since art mimics reality.

    Adventure Time has recently found it's way back into my immediate life somehow and am glad I found your channel! Also, your voice is very soothing and familiar somehow, nostalgic almost. Anyways, I hope you continue to do more on this series and perhaps even branch out to just as entertaining and thought provoking media.

    2:07 I kinda always saw that as just Orgalorg acting like “yeah I’m bigger and cooler than you and you can’t do anything about it”
    Cuz every single being in the adventure time universe other than The Lich and Golb always have this kind of go with the flow vibe casual dialect sometimes it’s hard to tell whether or not they’re being serious

  • @UnaturalShadows
    @UnaturalShadows Рік тому +28

    i think the reason orgalorg didnt know what he was doing or why at first was because his consciousness was squished down into a lesser form that couldnt comprehend the timescales and plans of the true orgalorg, but orgalorg still has an affect on the decisions and actions of gunter

    This is one of my favourite episodes. Existentialism has been a big part of my life for a while and this episode really was a nice way of thinking about it, your video presented the ideas very clearly. Not only the ideas of existentialism but also of the use in Finn’s life. How a character at the point of existential conflict has to make choices based on their outlook of their life, how they view meaning, of at all. Thank you

    There’s a kaleidoscopic breadth to scenes like this in AT that’s almost impossible to sum up from any given angle.
    They’re like Yin and Yang both explorers, one bound by the love of his friends and family, the other free but in the end, alone.
    Finn chooses to return to the existence he knows, Martin to the one he doesn’t - both choices being commendable.
    It really reminds me of that soliloquy in Hamlet -
    “To be, or not to be, that is the question:
    Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
    The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
    Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
    And by opposing end them. To die-to sleep,
    No more; and by a sleep to say we end
    The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
    That flesh is heir to: 'tis a consummation
    Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
    To sleep, perchance to dream-ay, there's the rub:
    For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
    When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
    Must give us pause-there's the respect
    That makes calamity of so long life.
    For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
    Th'oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
    The pangs of dispriz'd love, the law's delay,
    The insolence of office, and the spurns
    That patient merit of th'unworthy takes,
    When he himself might his quietus make
    With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,
    To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
    But that the dread of something after death,
    The undiscovere'd country, from whose bourn
    No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
    And makes us rather bear those ills we have
    Than fly to others that we know not of?
    Thus conscience doth make cowards of us all,
    And thus the native hue of resolution
    Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
    And enterprises of great pith and moment
    With this regard their currents turn awry
    And lose the name of action.”
    Any way I view it, it’s beautiful
    Pendleton Ward really gave us something special with this show

    I don't think it has anything to do with existentialism, rather cynicism. Nothing matters because of predetermination or the global consciousness or whatever its referred to as in this show. Existentialism really is a branch off of cynicism, and says that the true meaning of life is the harvesting of your own life's victories and losses; friends you've made and the impact from you to other people, the work you've done, the mark you made on the world down to the most minute detail.

    His meaning is the same as our meaning, to pick and choose which moments we want to experience via the construct of time by partitioning ourselves into moments offered to us as if they were templates for us as that which lies in between mind and body.
    That’s why he had the luxury of choosing to stay, and why his father had the luxury of choosing to leave. We all have the luxury of choice.

    Perhaps all these oppositions, fate and free will, and meaning and meaninglessness are all a 'two different sides of the same coin idea'. Just like space and time are interdependent on each other, maybe other dualist concepts of reality work together in a way that is incomprehensible to the logical mind. We find ourselves trying to understand reality as having a singular truth, a single base, when maybe instead it is a bowl of well seasoned truth spaghetti all intertwined to create a fluid existence

    I disagree that Orgalorg is a force of nature. The quote ascending in the ship always read to me as him transitioning from Gunther to Orgalorg. Orgalorg having just enough influence to convince himself to take these actions.
    He realizes what he’s supposed to do in space because he’s no longer clouded by earth’s gravity.
    I don’t think he’s a force of nature by saying “you can’t stop me, I’m orgalorg” We’ve seen in “gold stars” that Orgalorg has existed before there was nothing. He doesn’t view himself as capable of being defeated. I think he just has a massive ego. Compounded with seeing the comet, he might suspect that he’s the agent of change, making him even more confident he can’t be stopped

    I’m really glad they showed Martin accepting it. All too often films and tv shows have an agenda to push, to not influence the younger generation, so the main character always has to take the nobler road or whatever is deemed socially acceptable of that period. And this in turn, to me, can seem like a propaganda of sorts, to never achieve immortality, harsh reality is always better than false virtual worlds, but sometimes people are just sick of real life and it’s struggles and may be I would just do what Martin did. Having another important character to choose that fate gives the audience validation that it is a valid choice

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but in Magicka, there's an idea of wanting to achieve apotheosis, but on your journey, you realize it's not worth it for one reason or another. This theme is explored in SCP as well. Sarkics Aya trust the meat instinct and mechanites embrace the mechanical fate of the universe.
