The film’s problems are the lack of originality & the feeling of absence, however the film is still A welcome & enjoyable entry into the series. (70%) (3.5/5 stars) (positive)

For Candyman to say nothing "socio-political", given its setting would not only be unrealistic but also incredibly false.

I thought the original sequel made the franchise a bit lore heavy. I felt the new film redressed this well and gave it back some ambiguity.

Very heavy handed and as subtle as a brick to the head. Malignant was way better.

Disappointing review, so much wrong with this movie, I don't expect Kermode to hate it just because I did, but there are so many glaring flaws that he just glossed over. He's going soft.

I have to agree with you, I found it quite contrived and really boring except for the last 10 or 15 mins. Nowhere near as scary as the original.

Candyman was a mess imo. It was hard to follow, jumped all over the place, was full of plot holes and dead ends, had badly written characters and bad dialogue, and the attempted social commentary didn’t really work at all. I think these days mark is soft on films just because they attempt social commentary, even if they don’t actually pull it off.

It was full of ideas and about as scary as a moderately good cup of tea

Very poor film. Don't even know where to begin.

Was the "sociopolitical" aspect present in the original movie? If so, I don't recall it. I found it very grating in this incarnation, frankly it made me roll my eyes and wonder whether Jordan Peele's movies will all carry a similar "message", valid or imagined.

@@ISimulacraaa It was abit under played i feel in the remake. Sure, there were the instances where it looked that way. But it would quickly get debunked in the next scene. The woman in the gallery that says something along the lines of "Your kind are pioneers and should be looked after". "My kind?". "Artists". It felt like one of those things where it was challenging expectations. Cause, it knew the audience was gonna go in thinking "Here we go! Another political stated film". But it didn't go too much into it.
The cinematography was breathtaking. And it had very inventive ways with story telling. It's just that acting felt very wooden. And the movie went on abit long. I still wanna check it out again.
P.S. It's leeeeeeeagues better than the sequels.

If you’re right wing, you’ll hate it. If you’re left wing, you’ll love it. Simple. I embrace progressive themes in films provided it’s not done in a hipster sort of way.

@@SkinnyEMedia I'm not into flawed messages, which is what I saw in this movie. Every single cop at the end was white, and that wasn't an accident, and it's not depicting reality.

@@TheVarietyVendor agreed, the cinematography was very good. It was a well made film. The script wasn't quite there though I thought...nothing there that really shocked; still, much better than average
