Hello! Can you tell me more about it? I'm thinking about starting freelance on upwork in the upcoming weeks and I'm wondering how to go about my portfolio. And what skill set you had when you firt started. I don't think my skill set is bad at all since i am an art/design graduate but it is a bit rough around the edges and idk how to overcome that. Another issue I'm facing atm is that I don't own any paid programs, I work mainly on krita and blender 3d (still a beginner in blender) but I used to render on twinmotion edu which I no longer have so I'm wondering if you have any free software recommendations as well? Thanks in advance!

self worth is TOTALLY TRUE. I'm gonna share a little story with you. Started on upwork in January 22, barely had money to buy connects and thought the only way I could get a job was to bid low rates. Got this job at $4/h, YESSSS, 4 dollars an hour. I was mistreated and dealing with addicts so I ended up ending my contract after just one mouth. Client give me 2 starts but now, 10 months later, I'm top rated freelancer with 100% success rate and multiple clients and charging $20/h (thinking about raising after this video)

That was a great and valuable video. Let me share one experience.
I don't randomly apply for jobs. I took the time to research the client and check the description from top to bottom. If that fits then I choose it. That's the reason, I don't have that much of work going on. But, among 70 proposals sent on Upwork, I have got only 3 clients.
Am I sad? No absolutely not. That 3 clients are now my recurring clients and I can charge 4 figures without any hesitation. Because I was standing on my usual pricing and they give me the opportunity. I took it and prove to them, what I am capable of doing. Side note: My portfolio played the most important role.
And now within few months, I got the Top Rated batch on Upwork. So, don't loose hope, Just keep doing self made projects and learn/polish your skills. Let your portfolio speaks.

The whole Thing with "Freelancing is always seen only with the benefits" is very similar to Music. Everyone wants to be a rockstar, but nobody wanna deal with toxic bandmates, record labels squeezing money out of you, people trying to use you for fame that leave you once you fallen down again, Sleepless Nights in the Studio and the mental breakdowns that come from being not able to express the Song you actually want to write, blood sweat and tears of learning your Instrument to make something truly special…
All that is not seen. People just see the People on stage, having a great time being cheered on by the crowd.
    Same thing with Freelancing IMO.

Hey josh, thank you for your video ,Im new to freelancing after 11 dedicated years in restaurant industry that left me with a torn knee cap, mental and emotional exhaustion. With a background check that stops me from getting hired as a manager again, and like I explain to everyone I cannot get my background check expunged or work “felony friendly “ jobs due to being arrested and charged for a homicide. It was a unfortunate event that haunts me to this day. I live my days now as a Pacifist, and i changed my life, but my past makes it difficult to build a future, and my present day is at risk.
I’ve always loved to draw, design, tattoo, and help others any way I can. I had windows 98 at age 8, where I played pc games like command and conquer. I built a website at 9 years old but people don’t look at me as a tech guy cause I’m covered in my own tattoos from face to legs. I tried selling my art as Nfts before but was scammed and accounts drained and i keep feeling maybe I’m not smart enough now to do any of this. I struggle wit brain damage from sheriffs who gave me a traumatic brain injury and witnessed them murder the next inmate they beat up after me. My past is one I wish No one experienced, and I’m just solely focusing 20 hours a day on trying get work or my first gig on any platform .
I just need a little bit of help getting that first gig. I tried fiverr, and freelancer and so far nothing . And going to try up work now , and I appreciate you sharing your experience and thoughts when it all seemed impossible. Ima continue trying , cause I’m at the point where my housing is at risk and I can’t let my dog experience what being homeless is like. My puppy deserves better and I buy him a warm meal before I buy myself one. Just thought I vent it out to help with anxiety . Thank you again have a great day and I just hit a like and subscribe

Really well made video, thanks Josh. I`ve been on the freelance grind for almost 5 years now and the truth is that I feel it never gets easier. But honestly, apart from the fun coworkers and hangouts, I do not miss the corporate 9-to-5. I'm much more satisfied with my work outcome and experiences by being a freelancer, even if I have some slow months with little income, it makes even more exciting to secure new clients and surprise myself with new pieces for my portfolio. Much love to all the freelancers worldwide.

    1. Have self worth, not a race to the bottom. Not every client wants to pay cheapest. Double your rate.
    2. Great portfolios win jobs. Think of paying for help here i.e. better thumbnails
    3. Be ready for imposter syndrome. Dont compare your chapter1 for someones chapter20.
    4. Bad clients exist. Be selective. Most are good.
    5. Freelancing is not for everyone. Can take a few hard years to get going more smoothly. One client can change your life.

I've been full-time freelancing for 13 years - without Upwork or similar platforms, and I'm just starting to look into Upwork a bit, just to widen my reach. So getting "the hard truth" sounded good to me and I watched (and upvoted) the video. I'm honestly relieved that none of the points seemed particularly hard to me. I was thinking about writing my first proposals with a lower rate than my usual, just to get things started and some projects on the platform in, but I think I'll stick to a somewhat normal rate and don't discount too much. I'll also try to research the clients a bit, to filter out the most insane ones. That won't protect me from finding a bad egg, but it hopefully reduces the chances...
