Ich liebe Katarina. I waited on her when she came to Boston in 1994 to perform in an ice show prior to the 1994 Olympics. She ordered a club sandwich in her room and I delivered it with a special cookie platter wishing her a "dreite geld" metal (which I knew she wouldn't win). She was so classy and gracious, granting not only me but a co-worker an autograph. She loves her fans and her fans love her.
Katarina...executed the Easiest Triple Jump Combination in the Short Program of ALL of her closest fellow Competitors. The Judges...made it easy for her.
I usually find Witt's programs to be melodramatic and overrated artistically, but I have to say this one is really well done. You can't help but get pulled into her joy, particularly the last step sequence... It was beautiful.
she make this performance amazing. who cares what kind of costume she had? ok, it could have been better, but it's not truly important. fact is, she was a living legend already. those many skills, she have, especially artistic, make her that who she truly is. a multiple champion. the best. without competitors. she was, is and will stay the best. i haven't seen a better one yet. ( maybe more technical, thanks to rule change, but not artistic way. ) not even today.

It occurs to me that coming second here was probably the reason why Katarina skated a poor LP. Despite this excellent performance the judges made a statement to Katarina that she was not going to win automatically on the artistic impression marks. This put pressure on her to do the triple loop which she had omitted in Calgary. As it was she completely messed up her attempt (almost falling on a double) which then seemed to affect her concentration on the final triple salchow (doubled). The championship really was there for the taking by Thomas who sadly just wasn’t up to it.
She skated this programme better than at the Olympics. Personally I think the judges gave the SP to a Thomas to maintain interest for the FP, had Witt won this it would have almost been a foregone conclusion
Debi Thomas just had too much going on her plate. She was going to college taking pre-med studies while training for the Olympics. In today's competition that would not even be an option. Athletes take a year off to train full time for the Olympics and World title which is what Debi should have done. How could she expect herself to do well with not enough preparation ?
This is the performance that the ISU enacted "The Katarina Rule". Women's hips, midriffs, and butts must be covered. Costumes may not be theatrical in appearance. In 1994, Witt's SP costume was also controversial. Her extended tunic top acted as a skirt and partially covered her hips.

I think Katarina won everything at 1984 worlds but then always came behind Ivanova in figures and from 1986 Debi Thomas too. In 1987 Katarina was 5th in figures I recall.

What a Lady!......Nowadays jump children on the ice.....high talanted, but squeezed like the citrons by coaches who are overambitious and cold and have no feeling at all for a good programm. .Katharina, so it was- and so it is! The Americans, what great, honest and encouraged spectators! I bow my head! In that time it was not a matter of course. But Kathi was to lovely! When Eteri sees a Lady today , ( for example Jewegenia or Lisa ) she recommends to retire and to get babies! What a change into bad in this beautiful sport! Art is dead! Congratulations! But we have Brian...the last of the greatest coaches ...and Alexei Myshin.....the real masters of sport. But against an army of children with such an "manager" - noone can win. It is an unequal battle.....Alina is save....she took the last possibility and could escape.....! Bravo! She deserves a great life!
Jonathan Partridge I think as she’d won the figures, the judges tried to keep the competition open for spectator interest. Kat skated this programme better here than at the olympics where the 2LO in her jump combination was pre rotated.
Actually, that‘s not true, Frau Müller was spied on by the Stasi herself, since she was a quite prominent figure in the GDR, so they were scared that she might defect. Also, Jutta Müller would have never provided the Stasi information about Katarina on purpose. They were a real team.
Completely disagree, the pull up camel spin she performed in her free programmes was beautiful. No other top flight skater did one at the time and the Lalique trophy was designed on this spin so she can’t have been that bad
