- I tested the new Rode AI - Micro for 2 Weeks. These are my expiriences and recordings i made with it. It still has alot of Issues , some of the could be fixed with an update.

2024 update. Bought the adapter, updated to the latest version and the issue with volume is still there (even with the levels set to max in RODE Central and in Microphone Properties in Windows).
It makes the adapter not very practical when used during calls (zoom, google meet).
There is also a problem with connecting a stereo microphone (Sony ECM-LV1 in my case) in stereo mode, described in this video (one of the channels is recorded very quietly)

I'm sorry to hear that only one channel is working in Stereo mode with your Stereo Lavalier connected to the AI-Micro.
It's worth noting that this mode is designed for stereo microphones that don't need Plug in Power for both channels. However, in your case, it seems like your Stereo Lavalier requires plug-in power for both channels.
I'll definitely share your feedback with the development team to ensure clearer instructions for this microphone in the future.
For now, I suggest switching to Split Mode in the Reporter App and using a splitter cable like the one linked below to power and use the microphone. This method will ensure that plug-in power is working, and you'll have two separate channels for each microphone:

The FAQ page does not contain any such information, which to me seems a bit misleading to users:
"Does the AI-Micro supply plug-in power?
The AI-Micro provides plug-in power (1-5v) for microphones like Lavaliers and VideoMic on-camera microphones"

It seems to me that this can't be fixed by an update and seems to be a hardware issue. So pay attention if you need this functionality.

Thank you for this review! I was tempted to purchase this hoping it would offer increased gain on a passive mic, but I see that's not really the case.
Thank you for this video! I was considering this device but decided against after the video. I wanted to use it for Zoom and streaming and having the audio too low is a shame. Rode should do a v2.
UPDATE: Rode released a big Update to the Rode Central App (1.3.5) on PC but there seems to be no changes to the AI-Micro, also no Firmware update. All my issues from the video are still there with Rode Central 1.3.5
The current verse of Rode Central is now 1.3.6. Are the problems solved now?
any updates if the AI-micro streams the sound louder? I intend of using it for live streaming, discord, skype etc
@@masteralbo i don`t know why but in discort it works for me if i lower the discord volume to a specific point.
i have lots of other issues with the device so maybee mine is broken i`m trying to send it to rode for "repair" and inspection
My micro used to have great audio levels when I would connect a phone to do interviews. Now when I connect a phone volume is super low. Idk what happened. Worst thing is it used to be great
@@NinoAmerica Hi, yes i also experienced better Audio levels when conecting it to Mobile devices. Unfortunately i dont know what caused yout probem. Maybee there was an update for the Rode Central app on your device? Good luck hope you can fix your problem

Distortion sound is normal when plugging some USB audio interface that doesn't have grounding wire into PC that has a PSU and grounding. So some static noise might occur. As you already recorded.
Solution is to use a notebook instead that has a battery and is properly grounded.
Also, if you're in EU, try changing side of a schuko plug.
And also try to see if your grounding is properly done in your house. Touch your metal part of your PC and see if you feel the electricity shocks when moving your hand over it. If you do, then grounding is not done properly...

Thanks for the splendid review Roland. Unfortunately, I saw your review only 1 hour after the AI-Micro arrived from Amazon :-( . I can confirm all your issues and plan to return the device to Amazon. As you mentioned, at this point in time the device is not fit for purpose.
Sad to hear that others seems to have simmilar issues , it was not clear to me it i have a faulty device or if its a wider issue with it.
i'll keep the device and take a look at updates maybee there will be another video when a mayor update arrives.

Hi, last time i checked was 2 Weeks ago, most issues were still there. i managed to get the Sound a bit louder in Discord by tweaking the discord settings but that's it. all the annoying electrical sounds, the errors when plugged in while restartin... all still there for me
I sold it a week ago because it didn't get an single firmware updates since i got it
i should have looked for this before buying, mine arrived a few days ago.
As of July 2022, these issues still exist.
Plenty of white noise/hiss with live monitor or play back and extremely quiet recording, tested with varying microphones as well.
Had the microphones placed unreasonably close to sound sources for it to even register different sounds.
also just took a quick look through the manual too, at 100% in the app, it sets dB gain to +0, and at 0% its minus 24 so hopefully that can get rectified by an update? not sure if hardware limited at this point any more.
I'm sorry you have the same issues, i have heard it from alot people now. seems like this ist just how this device is built.
From day 1 i never got a single update so i dont think any of this will be fixed. Thats sad considering the 20 updates my rode wireless go II got since release improving it significantly

Have you tried to adjust volume with Rode connect?
maybe you can try using third party audio recording apps which has manual gain feature such as 'twisted wave', lexis etc which for me it works with rode ixy (30 pins) on iphone 4 or even with lightning adapter on iphone 5..
if you have other old smartphone which still using micro usb connection would be interesting if you do experiment using otg connection, thanks
I had a question. But firstly great video. Thank you. Could I use this for recording a podcast using Zoom on an iPad. So my audio goes in the mic input. And then the other person's audio would come out the headphone jack, I could head them. Or is the headphone jack really just used as a 'monitor' of what is going into the microphone?
Hi Daniel, the Headphone output is there to monitor Both the sound of the connected microphones and the sound of the device connected. So for me it seems like this should work. Unfortnately i cant test it for you since i have sold my AI Micro.

I think this product is aiming more for audio recording and post processing. Maybe you can try something like the creative sound blaster play series (or the higher end G3-4-6-c7) I've seen some other spanish reviewers that say that this rode ai micro product is just great for their use case (like on the go recording for some tv channels, interviews, etc) but they have to apply post processing for sure.

Did you ever find a resolution for the issue at 3:40 where split mode didn't record channel 2? I'm experiencing that exact problem now, and it's the use-case this was recommended for.
unfortunately not, all the issues shown in the video where still there half a year later , i sold the device.

The issue has to do with the grounding. Don't use a USB audio device/interface without grounding into the PC. You will see this problem also with other USB Audio devices with no grounding, not just Rode.
With my Apple Macbook Pro M1 there is a lot of static noise when connected to the charger. As soon as I unplug the (standard Apple) charger, the hum is gone. I thought I had a faulty unit, however, a 2nd one showed had the same issue. I'm using this together with a Rode Lavalier II. Now highly doubting what to do. Record all audio on my laptop with the power cable unplugged or send it all back to find a proper solution.
Pro tip: remove the locking screw when using it with the AI-micro. I've noticed that greatly improved the reliability of my mic getting 'recognized'.
I had the same problem with static noise when leaving plugged in all the time / mostly after reebooting. It was annoying to unplug it every time.
@@RolandKlocker sounds like a faulty product. Did you narrow it down to a Macbook or did you experience it with another pc/laptop as well?
@@roderickdeleeuw2101 Was on a PC , Workstation with Asus Motherboard, Win11. Rode Support just sudgested to install the rode central app (witch i already had , and also wrote this in my first message to them) but i already got rid of the AI-Micro now so i dont have to be anoyed by this bad product anymore

Hi , i tested it and pluged into a power bank , it actually turned on and i could her a very quiet version of the monitoring signal. unfortunately there is no way to make it loder so probably it won't work for the way you intend it.

I bought the Rode AI-Micro a few moments ago, and I am experiencing the same issues. I can hardly hear it and it has a lot of noise. I am returning it tomorrow. Do you have any recommendations for an interface for android?
unfortunately i dont know other interfaces for android. Not really an interface but for me the Wireless Go II works really well.

its just the highpass filter on input 2 , input 2 didn't record.
