- I am updating my Synology RS1219+ It was starting to run a little low on spaces, so I invested in a 18TB Hard Drive, to expand my NAS.
Thank You to my Patrons, that has helped sponsor this expansion : / myplayhouse

For 3$ a month, you get an extra weekly "What's UP" update video. Just for my Patrons. The Support I resave on patreon is all used on stuff to make interesting videos on UA-cam.
My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.
You're NOT cheap Morten, just shrewd and wise spending yours/Patreon's money to make us interesting videos 👍
Thank You,, I do like to get stuff that makes good videos and can be used :-)
Thank you very much. Just opened up two of these (smaller storage) but same casing, so I could add them to my new DAS enclosure. Just saved me a couple of USB points & plug sockets and its much neater on my workspace. Very much appreciated.
Hi @hAngerManagement
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Note dsm7 supports live replace feature witch makes repair time faster , you have 4 bays free
You install a new drive into the empty bay (do not remove old drive) then goto pool and select menu Replace Drive select old drive as source and new drive as destination and it will attempt to mirror the drive without removing redundancy once finishes successfully the old drive is then deactivated
Also enable data scrubbing schedule on your pools (make sure the second page is ticked as mine stopped doing scrubs for 2 months before I noted because second page where you select what drives to scub was unticked (I had 2 pools deleted second pool it unticked both in the data scub section for months)
Humm Interesting,, I have not heard of that before... adding and removing drive.
@@MyPlayHouse dam I should have copied it it got filtered, I forgot about links been blocked (check your UA-cam moderation/filtered posts, unsure where it's located on UA-cam to unblock it
Good morning Morten just wanna say thank you for all the Free advice it’s very important information from somebody that has a lots of experience and the tech world you always seem to have a solution to every problem👍✌️🤙❤️🇵🇹❤️
Thank You :-) It is an illusion,, I just do not make videos, if I am totally blank,, witch is why I am not showing you Linux or programming :-)
👍 can you look at my other question to see if it’s possible to come up with a solution for Cindy ?👍✌️🤙❤️🇵🇹❤️
if you don't want to go to the expense of a toolkit like the ifix-it kit, fairly stiff guitar picks work well in opening the enclosure when shucking. I always test the drive in the enclosure first, that way, if it's a dud, I don't have to worry about putting it back in and risking WD not honoring the return :)
I also tested it before taking it out of the box,, it´s in the video :-)
Lol. "Expensive tool kit". Starting at $17 on Amazon!..... After buying hard drive $200+. Some people like to exercise their fingers too much!😂
Hey Morton - Did you know if you go into Storage Manager and the list of HDD/SSD you can click 'Action' then 'deactivate' which will safely remove the old drive from the pool and power it down. This means you minimise the chances of damaging the array and also the drive as when you pull it out the system it won't be spinning. Have a great day.
Or simply shut down the nas, replace the drive and then start it up again.
No I did not know that,,, I am for sure living life on the edge :-)
If the drive came from another NAS, this can be danagues. As there can then be two different OS´s
23:37 in all honesty Toshiba makes the best drives in my opinion. I have WD, Seagate, Intel, Samsung and Toshiba Drives and the Toshiba ones never die on me. I've had them for 10 years now and they still work great and that's after me using them everyday for those 10 years. They also cost less than the other manufacturers. The reason I have the other ones was because Toshiba stopped selling drives in Europe for a while.
Hi @someuser4166
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Heres an odd tip for you, in Diskpart - you can type "lis dis" and "sel dis 0" rather than type "list disk" and "Select disk 0"
Thank You :-) I do know there are "lazy" shortcuts,, but it makes more sense when I do the long text.
@@MyPlayHouse I always doubt if the command is clean or clear… maybe I should try clea
Excellent video as always! 👍 It's great to see real CMR drive in Elements box.. 😉
One broken tab isn't bad, You don't need that case anymore.. 😂
In reality, you won - great drive.
One question - what is under 18TB sticker on box? 😂🤔
øhh that is a good question :-/ I did not check.
Shucked a few 10 TB Elements drives. Some of the drive mounting holes can be odd and they usually need 3.3V disconnected to work. (I normally snip the wire in the SATA power extension)
I have not had to use that trick,, yet,, a bit of a shame, as it would make good video :-)
@@MyPlayHouse I thought you did the trick with tape a few years ago.
You only need that trick if mounting in a PC, in a Synology NAS it isn't required
@@cevadau probably their backplane design.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Earlier I bought an 8tb 5400rpm drive to back up to. Then saw this video - mine seems inadequate now haha
Do not worry about it. 8TB is also a lot. I do it a little bigger, as it makes for better videos :-)
You shoudl run raid scrubbing regularly. On my NASes I have a scheduled job for once a month. If it's too long ignored it can lead to data loss. See LinusTechTips he had a ZFS Pool in his Petabyte Server go bad and almost lost all data.
Okay,, I will do it,, but I do have two other copies.
I just shucked some 14TB drives. Been putting it off since black friday. Currently testing them. Good video as always! (Also second)
Edit: have you ever had to return a dead one? I've been able in the past to register the drive inside the enclosure and just return that. You?
Nice with actual servers you don't need to do the tape hack
Thank You very much! :-) No I have been lucky and non has failed as of yet...
I once had to return one that almost certainly wasn't a genuine Western Digital, but I suspected there was something wrong as soon as I took it out the box. It just didn't feel like usual Western Digital build quality, and the capacity was way lower than advertised.
@@katrinabryce I seen had that happen a few times. Stopped me from buying from actual stores. Too many people at the time shucking them and returning them with smaller drives
I just changed the drives in one of my Syn's, and they give the same warning when using Seagate harddrives.
Hi Søren Steinmetz
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
If the drive is plugged in to a electrically powered USB hub with it's own power adaptor, is the power adapter still required for the drive to work? Thank you.
Hi @Daywalker222
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Hello Morten, i really like your Videos, please make more about HPE Servers please :) At this Video i little confused, i would really never use this Drives into a NAS. My Synology NAS now works on 8x Seagate Exos 20TB Drives into a Fantec Server Case. Bevore that the Drives are Ironwolf Drives, At all my drives are never goto into any error :) But always the WD DRives are dead within less than 2 Years.
I have a hard time with HPE equipment,, as I know I get so bad services on the equipment,, and need that service, more often, than on other brands.
Sigh.. the cheapest 18TB in Sweden costs $335 because the extra taxes on hard drives :(
That is cheaper than the just about €400 I payed :-/
So the read speed is 200MBps at the end of the disk as well? Most of the time HDD slow down towards the end.
I have also seen that,, starts at like 240MB/s and drops to 200-220MB/s
Can you tell me if it can be connected to a smart TV?
Sorry,, I do not have the faintest idea...
I see the seagate 18tb is over $100 cheaper, is it any worse of an option?
Uhh that is a lot cheaper...
Two years later, and now Seagate wants to be competitive again.
I'm sure you know that you just did a benchmark of the first 2TB and not a "test" (surface test) of the full 18TB. Because for that you have to use HDtune pro and dont't have to use the benchmark, but the test-function.
There are other programs to test the surface, but i prefer HDtune. Has proven it's reliability for years.
I think that HDtune uses the whole disk, as it is using the OS´s access to it,, but the program is so old it just show us it as if it was a 32bit thing.
I just wanted to compare with the drives I normally tests.
@@MyPlayHouse That's wrong. 2Tb is a limitation of the free version. The "pro" shows the full capacity. I tested some big HDDs in the past with it.
👍👍
Room for more!
I have a question for you in regards of Cindyvine she is having trouble with her hungry Power appliances that’s keeps draining her batteries can you help her with a power surge capacitor maybe this capacitor can help Take the load off the batteries She told me The Kettle to make coffee keeps drains the battery so I believe you can come up with a solution to help herWith her little problem I know you like a good challenges until next time I’ll see you in the next videooooo👍✌️🤙❤️🇵🇹❤️
Hi John
Cindy only has a solar system when there is sun,, when there is no sun,, she has a generator system,, she forgets to charge up the batteries with the generator. I did see her video,, and a Kettle like that, uses from 1600-2200 watt, and that is a lot for flat batteries :-/
hi morten
can you test truenas? 😄
I am sure you have probably already tested that for me.
So is this a good drive to get for storage?
It is still running strong!! that is a tough question,, as you know in 5 years if it was a good drive,, and then it is to old..
1,2, tree... LOL!
Hi @mochanic5498
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
also why u using regular hdd for boot drive and os drive??just buy cheapest 60gb/120gb ssd for booting and os.i mean u complain about power usage, but yet you use one drive for boot+only.sssd would way less power tahn that spinning drive what u use for boot+os only+u would get to add that drive to your synolgy instead
Humm I will look in to it,, but I do also have security cameras that use the NAS 24/7
how much kw power do u use per month lol
:-) I cheat and shut off stuff when not needed. I only have one server and a NAS running 24/7
Did I miss something - why does your 18TB show as a 16TB drive in Windows and Synology?
That is the 1000 vs. 1024 byte thing. :-/
My larger drive is 8tb wd gold
Well,, My first HD was 20MB,, I got it used for $30-ish,, then I bought a 240MB HD for $350,, I have spend a fortune on storage over the years,, never got a Gold one,, you are way ahead of me :-)
@@MyPlayHouse bought on bargain hw for 60£ per drive i think
You can still have warranty on a shucked harddrive. Just change the bill to an internal harddrive. Most Manufacturers just want a copy of the bill and i always send them a copy of an altered bill.
Sorry dude,, document forgery,, that is immediate prison sentence here. I would rather just get another disk,, and take that lose.
First 😊

Just tried your "myplayhouse" code on bargainhardware, and it's not working. Looking to get a DL380 Gen9. Is this a bug on their side?
Ohh dear,, happens every year,, I have just written to them,, so wait :)
