    One thing I wanted to add, @Erin’s Ark : It can’t make a difference now, but if this tragedy did indeed come from the ruptured abscess spreading bacteria throughout the herd , I do believe your vet bears some responsibility for not having told you to isolate the infected pig. I would never have imagined that this sort of situation could arise, and you have to see that you weren’t properly warned about this possibility. Love ❤️ and hugs to you.🤗

      I full heartedly agree with that.

      While I agree...I find most of the time I know more than the vet about my guinea pigs having had them most of my life and then rescued piggies in the last 15 years ...I still think vets still have a lot to learn about guinea pig health unfortunately ..in fact most smaller animals as there's very few that do ..but Erin has now helped us to understand more about what could happen because of an abscess.

    Oh Erin!! I just saw the videos about the health updates, I didn't even realize that it had become such a terrible issue that spread through almost the whole herd!! I was just watching part 2, I almost cried at what had happened!! I'm just SO SORRY for your losses, beautiful Miffy, and the other precious ones, I'm speechless!! Erin, I'm a Christian, and having 5 of my own guinea pigs, my son has rabbits, it really hits home, God made these creatures so beautiful and with their own little personalities,I just can't IMAGINE going through this!!! You're in my prayers ALWAYS!!

    You are the best piggie mama and gave them all awesome lives! Even travelling to their new homes in Scotland they had quite the adventures! Mabel & Angus may be the last of that dynasty but who knows what’s around the corner for you & them! 🙏🏼 for continued good health ❤️

    So sad. My guinea pigs have had abscesses in the past and I have never separated them, I didn't even know this was possible. I hope Angus and Mabel hang in there. ❤

    Hi Erin.
    I'm so sorry to hear about Pandora. My hear breaks for you. It's a dreadful disaster. Your Vet should have been more on ball. I had similar problems. I know how you must be feeling. I also have only 2 left. They are living indoors now till the spring. Both mine are males. Cooper a nurtured male, and salt, his brother pepper died. I only had one female left, April, she died. And I lost 2 with phnuemonia. It's been a dreadful year in the guinea pig world. Sadly Vets don't know enough. We had scans done showed nothing, they had Antibiotics, but alas, they still died. Love and prayers for Mabel and Angus. He would manage on his own I'm sure. But let's hope it won't happen. The trouble is with a bacteria like that, you couldn't have any more. Stay safe all of you. X

      Hi Eileen, thank you for the message. I am sorry you have had a similar experience with yours, it does leave a big emptiness when they pass. I guess that's the trouble with having a herd - if one becomes infected then it is very hard to contain, but still I never thought something like that would happen to them. I'd have to agree, the vet knowledge is very limited in most practices when it comes to guinea pigs, then like you say the treatment isn't always successful. Unfortunately one health problem seems to lead to another with Mabel

    So sorry for your losses. I'm happy that there are two survivors hanging in with your excellent care. Generally with a big herd or any size herd if one guinea pig is sick with something involving the need of antibiotics generally treatment for the entire herd would be necessary as a precaution since most guinea pigs don't always show signs of illness. I am sure you already know most of this though seeing as you had 14.

    • @ErinsArk
      @ErinsArk  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your comment, I can see why that would be a precautionary measure. I'm not sure how effective the antibiotics were, since we still lost most of them who we gave antibiotics to. Maybe isolating Mabel sooner would've helped, had we been advised to do so

    I know how you feel, I lost 7 bunnies in 1 week due to the RHD2 virus, it was such a tragic time and every year the anniversary of that week comes around i get so emotional. I only have 2 rabbits now so that i can keep on top with the vet bills and vaccines, but i do have a herd of 7 guinea pigs. 2 of them i actually only adopted 3 days ago, they are both females. I really wouldnt want to go through a tragedy again, so if there could be anything I could do to prevent it id love to know. I hope your well, take the best care xxxx🥰

    • @charlottekaiser619
      @charlottekaiser619 2 роки тому

      Did you not vaccinate them? Its a very infection killer so I'm suprised you would have that many rabbits and not vaccinated them against the biggest bunny killer

    • @ErinsArk
      @ErinsArk  2 роки тому

      I'm very sorry you went through that, I can imagine it must be hard to be reminded of what happened. It has definitely made me more worried about the possibility of something similar happening in future.. While it can't be prevented entirely, I'd say isolate an infected/sick piggie as soon as possible to prevent transmission to the others

      Since five days ago, I bought back all my piggies that I gave to a local pet store. 2 males, 2 females. I couldn’t count on the employee that took excellent care of them to be there every day as he also works for the DNR(department of natural resources) and often travels. So the herd is large again.
