BTW both filter sizes mentioned at 2:50, especially 55mm, are quite common on Sony/Minolta A-mount lenses and a few E-mount lenses. 62mm: 16-80, 18-135, 55-300 (A-mount) and 12mm Samyang with AF, 10-18 and 90mm Macro (E-mount) 55mm: A lot of A-mount lenses and 18-135 (E-mount)
@@HappyHubris Do people actually buy L mount cameras? Personally, I think RF mount should be opened up to third party manufacturers, but RF has a better selection of affordable first party lenses than E or L, in my opinion. The 50mm is cheap and reasonable quality, the 35mm is great at a decent price, the 85mm is a little bit expensive but justifies that by being stabilized and semi macro. They’re releasing a new 16mm f/2.8 and it’s extremely compact and only $299. I do really want this in RF, esp. the 24mm, but I’m also pretty happy with the current lens lineup and roadmap.
@@mbvglider I mean there is personal preference at play, but I personally went E for third party glass. The first party RF stuff seems either very mediocre or overpriced vs Sigma/Samyang/Tamron.
I have the 35mm F2 Sigma and really like it. Build quality is just amazing. I liked the 58mm filter size as it matches the GH5 lenses filter thread size and I already had NDs, etc. When it came to 24mm, I considered waiting for the sigma, but saw the filter thread size and instead opted for the Rokinon 24mm f1.8 AF compact. While build quality isn't as nice as the Sigma, the size, weight, filter size of 58mm, and quality of image/autofocus has been great! Price at $499 for the Rokinon is really great as well for E mount.
I love your videos. I really love seeing what both Chris and Jordan’s take on lenses, and cameras are. All your videos have made me, a novice photographer become a much better one. Thank you guys for the inspiration!
I’m laying here half asleep and I see the cameras you’re using, and I think “wait a minute, this isn’t a fair comparison in regards to sharpness because the S5 doesn’t have an AA filter”….aaannd then you both mentioned it. You guys never miss a step 😎
Well, thanks,Chris and Jordan ( nice haircut, btw) it seems like I already have the lenses I need with the FE85f1.8 and the FE24f1.4. Always fun to check out new lenses though!
ha! This is one of the best videos you guys have released. And I totally agree, btw, with the assessment at the end. With the Panasonic options, it's a hard sell. (24mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 for L mount.)
@@LuigiVN That ART Macro even outperforms the GM135, but it's big for f/2.8 because it's a macro - so a different function and form to these highly manoeuvrable lenses.
I think the 90mm is more versatile for studio portraiture than the 85mm because of its shorter focus distance and better sharpness. As always a good video!
Great job using the test chart to show LOCA! It makes it more comparable between different lenses if you use the same chart instead of a different real-world test every time :)
The soapbubble bokeh makes it look 10times better than much of the competition! I was so hoping for a AF lens with a moderate bubble bokeh to come out! Not for the stupid highlight bubbles, but for the much more defined and interesting everyday blurs. Just my taste!
The issue with a lot of Samyang lenses is massive sample variation (I don't know about the 24mm but I used wildly varying copies of the 35mm f1.4 and 45 f1.8). And I have heard about issues from retailers themselves too. A lot of the lenses that are sent to the reviewers are really good copies although I have seen a lot of variation in results from reviewers too for some Samyangs. If you buy retail, it's essentially a lottery on whether you get a good copy. Although all lenses have sample variation, most newer first party lenses or recent Sigma/Tamron lenses don't have sample variation that's anywhere near as bad as with Samyang/Rokinon.
Gordon Laing says that they don't supply review samples so reviewers don't compare them as often. There seems to be a big push for Samyang, lately, I didn't know that they were even near Sigma in class, perhaps I'll look them up. I thought they were almost all manual, though?
I think Sigma is creating an epic system for landscape shooters. I've often thought that all I need in the tiniest black box i can get with a full frame sensor, and sharp compact primes... so these lenses on say a Sigma FP-L.... ohhhh boi!
Sunstars! When will you bring out a video that test the best lenses for Sunstars? I used to shoot with a Canon 16-35 f4 that produced fantastic sunstars. However I'm now on Sony and have not found anything with a native Sony mount that match this performance.
You've both overlooked something in your testing. Sun stars do require a stopped down aperture, but f/16 is mathematically way beyond the point of diffraction. Diffraction is hard limited purely by pixel size. The bigger the pixel, the less diffraction. That translates into hard stops for sensor sizes and megapixels. For example, a 12MP full frame camera is the ONLY resolution and size that can shoot at f/16 without diffraction. Change to 20MP, and that f/16 diffraction limit turns more into f/12. Downsize to APSC with the same resolution, and that f/12 turns more into f/8. Basically all APSC sensors are at least diffraction limited at f/8 or so, most full frame sensors are diffraction limited at f/12 or lower even. All you get from there is a softer image. And that's why the sun stars weren't very good.
i would love the aperture ring and i love sigma lenses but im also a weight saver at first, so i might get the SY 24 1.8. its only 230g. the tiny series is really sigmas only alternative here.
I don’t need 24mm but I want one for when I travel. This is a perfect 24mm to get instead of the more expensive f1.4 versions. I wish it was 1.8 but f2 is close enough.
You know those series' with stories within stories? We need you to zoom in on Jordan's Amadeus shirt once in a while as a window to another world... Wooden Nicholls? That 90mm is a perfect complement to anyone with one of the Art-series 85s, but if you only have one then the Panasonic is fast and, err, fast.
In 24 I would happily buy the Samyang 24/1.8 AF. And If I have the money, the 24/1.4 GM. In 90 or similar, the native 85/1.8 are great and not a lot of money. So, these two? Nice lenses, but I would skip.

No no, I am going with this 90mm over any 85mm... because I am planning on trying to walk passed security guards on a concert and have a slight hope they will mistake my sony a7c (with this Sigma lens) as a regular 'tourist camera'. Even the smallest of the 85mm are too big in my opinon. (I am just a regular fan... not a concert photographer... so getting my camera inside is going to be a gamble...) Edit: Well... turns out the guards don't care one bit if you bring a camera. I even managed to get my Sigma 135mm in without issue. They only wanted to know if I had any waterbottles. Which I didn't, so I could just walk right in. It was a bit of a hassle switching lenses though, so perhaps a zoom lens would be better. I personally found that lighting wasn't such an issue, there were more than enough light on the stage, with all of the strobe and spotlights. (Though annoyingly some of the colored lights left banded stripes on the photos, so that sucked.)
I don't understand why you guys think sunstars are so important. You can use an effect filter if you want them, it looks too much as a gimmick. I think that it is much more important what a lens does in the dark with street lights wide open, or against the sun wide open. Maybe more difficult to test scientifically?
