Bohning Vanes - Better than AAE?

  • My AAE Max Stealths keep falling off. It might be because I haven’t been doing the entire prep process, but I wanted to try something new. I fletch up some Bohning ICE vanes and test how well the vanes stick to the arrows!

Ive used x vanes, blazers, and heats and heats were my favorite in four fletch, stuck great and you almost can't break the vane with other arrows. Currently shooting blazers in 3 fletch to try to lighten up my arrows and I wanted the short vane for more twist.

I think the heat vane will be a great replacement. I’m wanting to get a bit more helical, but I’m limited by the Bitzenburger. Might need to upgrade to a new jig.

I shoot several models of Bohning vanes. I like them for the same reasons you switched, they take less effort to fletch than AAE and they work. However, having said that I also like Flex-Fletch vanes. They are the toughest vanes on the market, but they are the most expensive.

Here’s a trick for stripping off vanes. Take electrical tape and wrap it around the shaft were the carbon meets the knock. This is to protect the tail end of the shaft and then use a potato peeler to remove the old vanes. It doesn’t take much pressure and it won’t hurt the shaft. Then use a paper towel with rubbing alcohol to prep the shaft. Then reapply new vanes

Hey Mat, just wanted to jump back on here, and let you know, I've been testing a new glue.. Loctite 495.
It might not be new to some people, but, I'm telling you right now, so far, this is THE best glue I've used in 40 yrs of fletching arrows!
I've tested it on aluminum, carbon, fiberglass, and wood..
On feathers and vanes (with and without bonding agent)
It's $13 or more an oz.. but so far, WELL WORTH IT!

First of let me start off by saying, I PREFER feathers over vanes, even though I've been using mostly vanes for the last 10-ish years. I've used Bohning vanes forever, mostly because I grew up with them, and they're from my home state of Michigan! When I worked at several shops, and owned my own, 90% of the people wanted Bohning. I've used AAE, with decent results. And I was super impressed with Goat Tuff vanes!! Recently I've been doing refletch and repairs for the local school archery team (though NASP) and they use Easton Diamond vanes.. and I must say, I'm very impressed with them!
I will say this.. your prep (according to manufacturers specs) and choice of glue is more important than the brand of vane..
I use a "branded" glue from a local hobby shop called "Riders Hobby Shop" (not sure who makes it for them) I also use Loctite 495 with great results... Ive heard the Gorilla brand super glue is also really good!
Although I haven't used it yet to know for sure...

I ve used the stealth vane for years and very very seldom does a vane just fall off. On Black Eagle PS 23’s and Carnivore shafts. I clean both the shafts and the vane base with 91% alcohol and use GORILLA brand instant adhesive. I have wondered if the surface of different brands of shafts may be a reason for less reliable adhesion? But, at the same time these vanes have stayed without fail yet on some florescent wraps on a few of my Carnivores I use for night hunting pigs and they have seen some rough use in the field. 👍👍

I tend to like running a 4 fletch. That being said it's easy to add a ton of weight to the back of the arrow. I've been running the Tac driver 2.25 with good success. That's with the broad heads I've thrown at it, fixed or mechanical. It's kind of annoying to do the whole prep thing for the glue up, but they steer really well. I feel all vanes will have their pros and cons.

For distance I shoot bohning heat vanes 3 fletch with 3 degree offset, for hunting I use the TAC driver 1.75 because they are extremely durable and not as pliable so they don’t parachute as much as a softer vane I haven’t tested the noise but I’d say that they would be a bit quieter and cut the wind, and the little higher profile out to 40 doesn’t affect the arrow flight, trajectory, or wind drift to much.

  • @iaincope5531
