  • OK so this was requested this morning and here is my first ever pixel shift image. I have a LONG way to go to harness the potential and have already noticed a few mistakes (higher shutter speeds, more stable pod), but for the sake of my poor laptop I won't repeat this experiment in a hurry 😅 - THANK YOU for all your suggestions, if I can make it quick, I usually will!
    Again, this isn't a camera review channel, it's PURELY about my journey with it, there's plenty of experts online you can follow if you want to know HOW to do things 😅 - but I'm here if you're curious about something, I love trying things out - Big love to all!

    I believe that even the slightest vibration creates problems with these hi-res pixel shift modes...
    which stands to reason if you're talking 100MP images between each microscopic half megapixel sensor shift and then sandwiching them together.
    I think a still life taken in the basement of a rural (non busy) urban location, might yield a better result, if you want an obvious sharpness test. Printing enormous prints would also show differences, but would also highlight the issues from atmospheric vibration.
    Thanks for posting the vid though.
    For those of us toying with this GFX purchase, its nice to see someone try and use pixel shift in a semi casual setting to see what potentially negligible difference we get between two modes.

      100000% agree - but please don't get me obsessed with reducing atmospheric vibration! It's undoubtably a beast but I think again it's mainly for archival stuff, at 100MB you're always going to have 'enough' camera - but yes for 'the field' e.t.c I think it's fairly representative of what you might get - will increase shutter speed next time and add some sandbags. Carbon Fibre pod was supposed to reduce vibrations but me thinks not 😅 - can't see me going to a rural basement any time soon but I'll let you know!

      @@JonnyBarrett Now that you're in the US, I'd avoid those basements too... especially with $10,000 worth of camera and lens gear.
      There's definite potential for rabbit hole venturing on making this whole Fuji-beast thing stable.
      I personally need a camera that can allow me to stitch together gigapxiel prints for art archival, so you were on the money.
      Keep up the good work squire.

      @@roscot40 yep. The top of that tripod won’t be good enough I bet. And in a landscape things will move on you anyway.

    Would definitely consider not using the central column up as it may induce shuttle vibration. Also the roof itself may not be a good location as some slight vibration may occur. Would also use the 10second self timer and have 1-2 seconds in between shots to allow for any camera vibration to settle down. But I have yet to try the pixel shift.....so why am I giving advice!?!?!?

    • @JonnyBarrett
      @JonnyBarrett  3 роки тому +1

      Because all that advice is great! Thank you for the thoughts, I will re-attempt pixel shift indoors with something static but interesting. I shall not be beaten!

      Agree that center column may get shaky, above a second story probably isn’t best for stability on this level of precision. But, I have seen some miracles from Trey Ratcliff from a helicopter! Keep right on from the roof until you find the limits, and then share so we can all learn from your blunders!

    I got the GFX 50S II, because 200mp is still a stupid amount of resolution without PC crushing file sizes. Other things are at least as important like a prime lens, low haze day, tripod situation on lock, sharpest aperture chosen, precise focus technique, etc. I'm going to do some tests where some of the scene moves like a river in the foreground, and see how hard they are to correct. Should be interesting. I feel like I should be able to just overlay one image of the river, and paint/eraser out the digital errors from the one good frame. Nobody needs water in high res anyway, but everything else will be.

    Hi Jonny, I also own a GFX100S and I have tried pixel shift with my Leica SL2 were I am supposed to go from +/- 45 to 180 M Pixel, I got the expected very large file but I was not impressed by the results even if for that I did use Zeiss Otus 55 and 85 who are some of the best lenses available today... I also used a very solid Gitzo tripod. So not sure the software are up to the job yet. No tried yet on the GFX.

  • @hautehussey

    Don’t use your center column. Your tripod is much less steady.

    • @JonnyBarrett
      @JonnyBarrett  3 роки тому +1

      Makes total sense, but without the centre column it’s hard to see over the wall! I will resolve to fix this!

      @@JonnyBarrett was that as high as your legs would go? Perhaps you just need a bigger tripod.

    • @Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy

      @@JonnyBarrett Yes, pretend you don't have a center column. Extend the legs up, and lock down everything on the tripod tight, then hang a weight from the tripod like a camera bag. That will get you rock solid so you can eek out those megapixels. Then only compile one at a time, and be nice to your computer, haha.

    Hard to tell from the video, but it appears that the reason the background is not tack sharp is because the stainless steel chimney in for the foreground is where the camera focused, and not far enough away for your aperture to have anything at infinity also in focus.

    Interesting test. Possibly the additional resolution you could get out of this is eaten up by the diffraction kickin in along with using f16. Maybe it works better with f8 or so ?

    • @JonnyBarrett
      @JonnyBarrett  3 роки тому +1

      All excellent points, but I don't think diffraction is that pronounced at F16 on medium format - but I will do another pixel shift video - I've learned much since this one!

    Did you know you can open a RAW or DNG file in Adobe Camera Raw, right mouse click on the image and select enhance. Photoshop ACR will scale it up to 4X just like you did with pixel shift. I tried it on a GFX100S RAW file and it works amazingly well. Try it and make a comparison. It may be that there is no need to do the pixel shift thing. OR imagine try the ACR Enhance thing on a GFX100S Pixels Shift image! Yikes - that would render an 800MP image file - INSANE!!!!
