The Aston Martin brand has undergone a huge transformation over the last 30 years. From super spy icons to Le Mans winning hypercar building track rats. So how did the company that was once all about looks and style become an endurance racer, an F1 team and a track weapon manufacturer? Well, actually it's a story of a toxic relationship and a bad breakup. Today, I'm going to try my hand at OEM couples therapy, as we look at the story between Aston Martin and Ford.

Ford helped Aston Martin, and Jaguar, and Land Rover, Mazda, and Volvo, when they would have been finished. and many of these car companies still have some involvement with Ford. (example) Land Rover Range Rover are still built on the Ford Explorer platform, that use a Land Rover running gear. Jaguar still uses the V8 engine supplied by Ford. and still has part ownership in Cosworth. in fact Ford still supplies components to many of these companies. and Ford is still on good terms with many of these companies. Ford had to sell these companies as part of their restructuring, after the economic recession. it's one of the reasons why Ford didn't have to accept a bail out from the Government. you might want to do more serious research before you post inaccuracies on the internet in the future.
Ford used the front first with the Ford Anglia
@@musicauthority7828 Mazda/Ford was the best car brand alliance of all times and it helped Ford to get much better quality on their cars!

I feel like ford acquiring Aston and land rover saved the brands from dying even if they lost some of their uniqueness at the time it ultimately allowed them to survive into the brands they are now.
Honestly, they probably saved Jaguar too. Like, don't get me wrong, I'm insane enough to have learned those old coach-building techniques, but they're not exactly suited to modern production unless you're already in the niche (like Ferrari or Lamborghini) and happen to be good enough at business to survive and get lucky enough to come out in the right spot following a series of huge wars and and and...
Short version, Ford kept these brands on life support long enough to get them out of the coma. Bitching about Ford yanking a grille shape from the deal is absurd.
I do believe the Explorer and Range Rover “likeness” is wayyy too close to eachother and Ford went too far.
I can’t speak to Aston Martin but Jaguar and Range Rover never turned a profit under Ford. Ford stripped everything off of Jaguar and turned it into an expensive Taurus. Ford selling all its luxury brands was the best thing for them and kept Ford from needing the government bailout. All of those brands are thriving now.

this video should've mentioned how intertwined the XJS and XK8 are in the development of the DB7. The XK/AM family trees are tangled up at the roots.
He's right to say that the XK looks like a cheaper Aston Martin, but didn't point out that the prior gens were both derived from the same car.
Another note is that the styling cues of the DB7 are heavily influenced by the stillborn Jag XJ41/XJ42 prototypes which Ian Callum checked out in the early 1990s.

Jaguar,Volvo, and Aston Martin and Land Rover were an electrical mess until Ford bought them and fixed their electrical issues that have plagued those companies for decades. Now with the Ford EEC system, those problems have become a thing of the past for them. Now TATA motors owns those companies and they are losing money.
@@mikesamra9126 well jaguar and land rover never had all there electrical/mechanical issues fixed, even during ford owneship, but for Volvo you're damn right. One MAJOR thing this video missed...the Ford Fusion's designer was Moray Callum. Ian Callum's brother. Also, if you Google around, you'll find early molds and models of the XK as an Aston Martin.
Aston martin was in relationship that seemed good, but turned toxic as the parter appeared to be cheating, then finally ended the relationship and had an amazing post-breakup life
And started a f1 team
We've all been there! Apart from the F1 team part 😂
i was just thinking that!
Well you can technically also see it as the partner Ford broke up with Aston Martin because they were a partner lazy and unsuccessful, Aston only thought they were fine because they looked good, so Ford showed them there are others that can look better or look just as good and be better. that motivated Aston to finally stop being lazy and become better themselves, at the end of the day, Ford actually saved them a lot here. Plus it was Ford design team that made the design in the first place so they didn't steal anything really.
I owned a DB9 Volante for about 2.5 years. Many of the mechanicals and electronics were shared with Ford or Volvo. While disappointing, at least it made sourcing parts easy and far less expensive than you'd think (which was important given how poorly built and unreliable the car was).

It's actually incredible that Aston still exists at this point and I'm glad they do. British cars are famously bad but there's always been something special about Aston Martin. Some of the best looking cars ever made in my opinion.
Why are you glad? Their cars are stupid and unimaginative. Owning makes no sense, and looking at one should only provoke "what an idiot" as a thought of a clear mind. They were just about the last company that kept yelling "never will electric cars work!!!". If anything, they would have deserved to have died somewhere about 2005-2007.
Btw. they also played the "range anxiety" card. Of course, not mentioning that a vanquish - or whatever - only had a range of 60 Miles from 900 kWh of energy when pushed. A Tesla model X at moderate speed would have won a cross country race easily, negating the "but it's faster" factor to something very, very ridiculous. But even then - no, even TODAY - they convince the sheep that "just put another 900 kWhs in the tank" is the right solution and a good, "efficient" thing.
That's why they don't want you to think in kW and kWh but in horsepower 🐴 and gallons/litres 📊makes it so much easier to hide the fact and blend the madness that cars are inefficient af and anything but "sporty" or "cool". Just think of horses and a barrel and smile. Don't think of energy and return!!! No wait: don't think at all!
Btw. Aston Martin will be bought by a Chinese Make in 4-5 years - 7 years max. and then they might have a chance of building really good cars.
ps. go check your yearly energy bill and see how much energy your houshold needed over the course of one year. Single user should need around 2200 kWh, couples around 3000 kWh. So it's a year of energy for your home or 200 miles in a vanquish when used accordingly i.e. why buy a 720 "horsepower" (that's 530 kW) car and then not use it?
Sorry if i ruined your advertisment-force-fed world. But it is high time to go to the real world.

The Lagonda is a friggin masterpiece, of weird and quirky design. They redeemed themselves with the Rapide though.
The Lagonda is gorgeous as a piece of design. The fact that it's not the best car at being a car is immaterial. I saw one in real life once at a gas station. It was otherworldly.
You guys are talking about the Lagonda and aren’t talking about the Lagonda Taraf right?
Honestly it looks like if a Crown Vic and an old Volvo wagon got smushed together
Aston Martin reminds me of that guy who came out of a toxic relationship, and got motivated to better himself. Good for you Aston!

Yeah because it was also their designer when they owned the company. Don’t just believe this fool research it yourself it all there to discover by a little reading.
Aston's are beautiful, looking and sounding, especially the V12's.

Comparing Ford and GM
Ford did take care of it's brands. Ford Volvos were really good, Aston made money, even Ford era Landies weren't terrible!
Now look at GM, and what they did to Opel, Vauxhall, and Saab.
Yeah. While an American brand owning our name was a bit off putting, Aston succeeded.
Don't forget about Holden. RIP
Independent volvos were better than fords owning volvos.
@@pushpadey4632 At least Ford had the decency to keep the T5 engine in production also they gave us the Yamaha 4.4l V8 something which would have never existed without Ford demanding a V8 engine for their top of the line models.
Ford always ruined the companies which they owns. They are not available to manage any company and then sell it to others. How useless they r, Gm is better than ford.atleast they didn't sell any company to geeeely. Ford sold volvo to (geely) which was a stupid
decision. 😡🤬

Look, I'll say it- the Fusion looks good. Especially the Titanium trim level
definitely... especially considering that the first-gen Fusions (2006-09) had those "bug-eye" headlights reminiscent of the 1996-99 and 2000-05 Tauruses...

you glossed right over the fact that the look they "stole" was set by the same designer, and was originally designed as a jag in the first place.
They *literally* explained that starting at 4:35.
Same designer, working with Jaguar, then he designed the DB9 (etc.) then the XK
Without Ford’s investment, the Aston Martin we know today would not exist. They took the grill design, but they also saved a dying company and showed them how to make cars more efficiently.
They have every right to use the grill. It was designed by a Ford designer used in a at the time Ford company.
Yeah agreed AML are absolutely boss now
Unlike GM, Ford knew treating their brands somehow good. Because brands which belonged to Ford are now refined and still exist - except Merkur and Mercury
Under GM, many brands died: Asüna (1993), Geo (1998), Holden (2020), Hummer (brand) (2010), Oldsmobile (2004), Passport (1992), Pontiac (2009), SAAB (2012), and Saturn (2009)
