      The Chrysler Airflow did that in 1934. They actually showed ads in movie theaters where a stunt driver drives an Airflow off a cliff, does a full somersault, lands on its wheels, and drives away. And around 1984, Volvo ads show a stunt driver driving a Volvo wagon off a 5 story parking garage, landing nose first on the pavement. The driver stepped out and walked away!

    I drive a 2022 Ford Maverick XLT and it’s honestly spectacular. I was a mechanic for years and my only concern is engine reliability. Otherwise it’s a great vehicle, I’m at 180 miles right now and have yet to hit half a tank. With that, I’ve driven with all seats filled, a load in the bed, and on the highway multiple times. It works amazing in every way. Only thing I haven’t done is towed yet but I’m planning on it. With its track record so far I’m betting it’ll be great. Ford really is starting to put its name back in the game as one of the dominant manufacturers and I’ve been enjoying it thoroughly.

      Reliability shouldn't be an issue, especially with the hybrid that we're getting. The 2.5 hybrid system Ford uses has proven itself to be insanely robust, and that e-cvt is about as durable as a transmission can be. The 2.0 might have a few more issues, but even that is a very durable and proven powertrain.

    • @commodorebud
      @commodorebud 2 роки тому +3

      the 2.0 has been in use since 2008. the transmission is definitely newer but used in the higher end escape, bronco sport, the edge, the discontinued focus, and the transit connect. it's been around for 2 (almost 3 years) now and I don't think there's been any big recalls regarding it.

      As an American, people here love being able to sit high and look over the road. They like "off-road" capability/high clearance. If people need more space than what a crossover or SUV offers, people usually get a pickup-truck. Which is also a very popular family vehicle here. Americans love big and rugged, overall. I also wish wagons and hatches were more popular here.

      I was surprised when he said people had to pick between good gas mileage or practicality. Wagons or as we call them in Germany "Kombi" (as in Kombination) were both practical and had better gas mileage than a SUV.
      So while apparently in the USA people had to pick between SUV or Sedan, everyone in Germany drove a Wagon/Kombi. And this is still what people mostly pick.
      For example:
      In Germany you will see more Audi A4 Avant & Audi A6 Avant as well as Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class Wagons than you will see the Sedan Versions of all of these Models.
      I always wondered why a Kombi/Wagon is less popular in the USA than a Sedan.
      No wonder it took so long for Audi to bring the RS6 Avant to the USA, but i hope all the other Kombi/Wagons the USA doesn't get from us Germans because they think the Americans don't buy them will now come considering the Success of the Audi RS6 & insane Sales Numbers.
      Also there is the cheaper Audi S4 and S6 Avant (a Version between RS Models and Standard Audi A4 and A6 Avant)
      Mercedes-Benz, VW, BMW, Audi etc all have Kombi/Wagon Versions of almost all their Models that i think arent offered in the USA but should be.
      Kombi/Wagons are always better than a Sedan if it's an Option

      CUVs are superior. If you are tall it’s difficult to get in and out of a low wagon. In addition they are safer in collisions with trucks, not to mention better visibility. There is no penalty in mpg or handling. They are cheaper to insure and hold their value better.

    • @Bartonovich52

      Define “better”.
      A wagon has less usable interior space. Is more difficult to enter and exit (which is why older people buy crossovers by the score). Lower ground clearance. And at the end, is really just a “shorter” crossover (because most crossovers are just “taller” wagons).

      I think the problem with wagons is that they are classified as sedans by the EPA, but get worse gas mileage than normal sedans. Crossovers are classified as SUVs, and get better gas mileage than typical SUVs. Thus crossovers, though getting worse gas mileage than a wagon, do better relative to EPA targets. A situation where outdated laws and guidelines (not updated to how manufacturers are skirting them) end up rewarding making less efficient vehicles. Well, it's good that they're finally mixing up the truck sizes again. Especially if there's a range of work-oriented trucks and such rather than the off-road *playing* orientation. I think there's a real gap in smaller working/delivery trucks/trades vans that especially EVs would be a natural combination with. Being kind of a handyperson/semi-shadetree mechanic, I could easily see myself in a circumstance where like a Maverick-sized thing with maybe just an extended cab and some racks for long things like lumber or ladders would fit. Or maybe a bit more of a little van thing going on behind.
    I don't really need crazy offroad suspension travel and such, and I can't remember the last time I had more than one passenger ...being able to carry a reasonably heavy load for what it is and just not get stuck would be fine, and I could see similar vehicles, maybe even more basic, rolling around the cities for light deliveries and other stuff you used to see mini-trucks doing. Some times in my life I've needed a full-sized truck, but I doubt the local florists etc really need like F150s. (Though actually a few around here use those quaint antique ones, which is cool, I guess. :) With these skateboard platforms it'd probably be pretty easy to make a retro styled version without changing much technically but crash tests. :) Right now with everything kind of designed around a lot of passengers, it's easy to miss just how much room you can have in a pretty small vehicle with electrics.

      The average new vehicle in the US costs north of $42,000. Automakers don’t even want to sell “entry level” products anymore, and low interest loans means anyone can get cheap financing. Cars/trucks are a LOT more reliable nowadays (keeping a vehicle for 10+ years isn’t unusual anymore) and buyers want features. They’d rather have one truck or SUV that does it all (hauls lumber while still seating 5) over a separate truck and sedan.

      Same as the Mustang Mach E - probably a good vehicle but completely different from the Mustang. Ford is trying to exploit (ruining in the process) their classic names to sell new crossovers. Granted I think they're all doing that, think of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

    Minivans were all the rage in suburbia until the soccer mom stigma took hold. Then the SUV was the hot station wagon. But gas prices were destined to increase and driving a truck was not fun for most. Hmm, what if people could drive a car but tell people it was an SUV...and the crossover was born.
    That said, I like the flexibility of Ford's platform and providing vehicles that do not all look the same from behind.

    • @speedingoffence
      @speedingoffence 3 роки тому

      @@silverharvest753 Perhaps it was a regional thing, but here the Baja was only available with the 165HP 2.5. 230 HP wouldn't have gotten me into the seat, either. Beyond that, I'm not a fan of turbo engines- I don't really care how much power an engine produces at 5000 RPM, I care how power it produces at 1000 RPM, because that's where I need it, especially in an AWD vehicle. I don't race my cars, I drive them, and when I go for power, I want it immediately. I don't want to have to keep my engine revved at 3000 RPM while I'm driving in traffic in case I need to pass.
      Also, like 99% of car owners, I don't know how to troubleshoot my own engine beyond the basics of what sounds or smells usually mean, and even then, I don't know how to fix it. I don't want to have to pay someone $120 an hour to figure out what's going on when something goes wrong. If you're not a mechanic, aftermarket tweaks are just a ticket to an empty wallet
      Sure, on paper you could get decent numbers out of it, but at the end of the day there's a reason that people weren't buying them, and the most cited reason is that little engine.

I got the Cherokee because not many other crossovers have a real low range 4x4, which I sometimes need to pull my coworkers out of mud. I have to say, while it doesn't have the suspension travel of a bigger SUV, so it'll never do trails and rock crawling as well, it's extremely capable in the mud, better even than most of my coworkers 4x4 pickups.
