Yesterday (17th of January 2022), the northern regions of Scandinavia were treated to a very rare high-altitude spectacle. For about 2 hours, rare polar stratospheric clouds (PSC) type II appeared out of nowhere, displaying a staggering iridescence contrasting with the dimmer twilight of the short polar days.
PSCs are also called mother-of-pearl clouds or nacreous clouds because their iridescence (diffraction of sunlight in tiny ice particles) is some of the strongest in clouds on Earth. Their strong colors are very visible with naked eyes, making the experience surreal, almost straight out of a fairy tale.
They are also some of the highest clouds on Earth, forming around 15-30km in altitude in very precise conditions, limiting their occurrence. It needs to be extremely cold up there (below 78°C), which can only be satisfied in the winter months above polar regions where the stratosphere is at its coldest. There, tiny ice particles (along with other chemicals present in type I) nucleate and form over mountain ranges because of vertical shears/strong winds to form lenticular structures (type II).
I filmed those in a rush yesterday between snow showers, as a friend gave me the heads up. I used a long focal length to really try and emphasize their iridescence. In one of the sequences, you can also see Jupiter hang above the clouds (top left corner!), as well as an airplane flying by!
All was shot with the Sony a7rII at a focal length of 200-600mm (Sony). All post production was made in FCPX. I hope you like the movie as much as I liked shooting and processing it and I thank everyone of you for your support. 😍😍
Pure magic!! Our skies hold such wonderful things!! Thank you as always! 👍👍👏👏🙏🙏😍🤩🤯
Dude, it's not done by nature☠️
These clouds are deadly☠️
They are a sign of great damage to the ozone☠️
This clouds form because of ozone layer depletion
Now that is well cool and I would love to be in a Plane and gey above and passed them Clouds
You won't be able to get above those clouds as planes fly at 12km max. There are at 20km up and above :)
Hi ya there so are you referring to the Coloured Clouds if so I was just referring to them Grey lower Clouds yeh
😲🤩
These can also been seen outside the Polar regions in Scotland.
By polar I mean close to the poles, not the Arctic circle :) They can form as far equatorward as the temps drop in the stratosphere. I'm aware they've been seen from Scotland and similar latitudes in the past :)
💚💫💛🎆
Wonderful sky 😃
Is it this called noctilucent clouds?
Nope, these are iridescent clouds. See these articles for the difference:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noctilucent_cloud
Thanks for the explanation. Anyway, these are great pictures.
@@Osmone_Everony They harbor a strong iridescence but they are specifically called polar stratospheric clouds, please read the description!
I wonder if there's any tie in to the ash from the volcanic eruption a few days previous?
That's a very good question! Don't think there's been a proven link in the past, but who knows!
@@NightLightsFilms I know that the ash cloud went that high and I guessing the dust particles provide a nucleation area for ice crystals to form.....so maybe.....
Essas coisas me deixa sem palavras de tão perfeito que é 💓😍
