  • I've been spending a lot of time with my nose in books lately, trying to absorb as much as I can about the Greco-Roman context of the New Testament. This involves reading notable Roman literature produced in the years preceding and around the time of Christ's birth (eg. Ovid, Vergil, and Horace), reading articles about Alexander the Great, the Seleucids, Pompey, Marc Antony, Cleopatra, Herod the Great, and studying Roman religion.

I've also been reacquainting myself with Classical Latin, which I studied long ago in all four years of high school, and for a semester in college.
The whole point of this is to understand the New Testament audience. How did Christians in the First Century understand the text of the New Testament? I think the best way to do this is to understand the history and culture of their world.

I'm one of those guys that doesn't go a day without thinking about the Roman Empire. The conquests of the Greeks and the Romans had lasting impacts on the New Testament world. We can learn about the historical and cultural context of the New Testament by studying the Roman world of that time.
