      With so much money being spent, why does script writing in SF always suck donkey balls? A client arrives on the train in the beginning of WestWorld episode Two of season one, and a beautiful woman quizzes him on things such as, "do you have a heart condition, any allergies...." Yeah, no. This makes no sense. LONG BEFORE taking his money, they would have determined these sort of things, long before he even got on the train. This sort of plot hole not only breaks immersion, it says that either the writers are retarded morons, or that they are deliberately insulting the intelligence of the audience. The only way that the suspension of disbelief can be established and maintained is with logical consistency.

      I think William being the man in Black is just brilliant.
      We can somehow explain the appearance differences is because William didn’t had a kind life as expected with the investment , his wife took her own life and also her daughter rejected him.
      With consumption comes feature changes, that why he looks older and different.

You're introduced to the two Williams at the same time so the show could emphasize the difference between them, only to reveal that they are the same person, just before and after suffering the loss of a loved one.

    Excellent explanation. One interesting note that you didn't explore: Ford invests his plan with the hosts because he believes that they can change, whereas humans cannot. In so doing, he demonstrates that humans can change because he has changed his outlook regarding the hosts - he adopts Arnold's view, thus changes. Similarly, Dolores' change is not beneficent, as you mention. Rather, she changes into just what Ford detested about humans. Wonderful balance of tension.

    To me, it seems to suggest that suffering is the source of consciousness, but also the source of cruelty. The human world is violent, and those who suffer in it come to Westworld to act out their pain in cold-hearted pursuits. This suffering affects William, it affects Ford (the death of Weber and his disappointment in how people use Westworld), and it affects Dolores, and they all become characters with a habit of cruelty rather than forgiveness and mercy. I think Maeve, and characters like Felix, Bernard and Elsie, are the ones who have shown mercy in spite of their suffering, a conscious choice.
    It all wraps up to the conclusion that no amount of intelligence or innate perfection will make one form of consciousness more moral than another, every individual makes their own choice in response to suffering. We must value kindness and forgiveness from any source, and seek to give it ourselves, rather than thinking in terms of race, creed, species or bio-mechanical origin.

      hmm in the end, we are all part of a bigger loop, AI created this universe and eventually we will create an AI smart enough to create another universe in an eternal obsession for control, evolution, comprehension and experimentation. In the end, the history is repeating itself over and over again ... out of nothing, nothing comes ... nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed ... in the end, we are no better than Dolores and William, we are all trying to make some sense of this nonsense, trying to live happily forever.

    • @jean-phil

      @@kevintheminion1497: the power to think comes from your brain which is the result of thousands of years of biological evolution. God and religions have nothing to do with this scientific theory (Darwin). About my earlier statement, I was basically explaining what I think could be an ending/conclusion at some point for this show. Are we really in such a world ? maybe. The world is complex, I think it's safe to predict that we will built some kind of AI that will be smarter than us eventually. Or that we will change our ADN to boost our own capacities, I think the world as we know it will change a lot and that we still have a lot to learn. When you think about it, computer science is extremely recent in the human history. We think about our lifetime but if you look at the bigger picture, our life is very short, progress will not stop and there is plenty of time for the humanity to evolve way beyond what we are currently.

    Does anyone else remember the conversation that Ford had with one of his earlier prototype hosts, he kept him folded in a bag in some lower level, think his name was "Wild Bill"? (character actor who played him as very distinct voice). Ford was having a drink with him. Anyway, Ford relates this story from his childhood to Bill about when he, Ford, had a dog that was chasing after something, I forget the detail now, but it was something the dog was never meant to catch, it was just to keep him always on the hunt. But one day someone screwed up, and the dog caught the thing, and it completely fucked the dog's mind up for good, I think they had to put him down.
    This was back in like ep3 or 4. Point is, I knew RIGHT THEN that the Man In Black (or 'Old William' as we'd eventually realize) was going to have a reckoning when he truly discovered the maze wasn't meant for him, despite Ford's blatant warnings to him such was so. cause from a writing standpoint, there was literally no other point at all in having that scene exist if it wasn't supposed to then mirror the s1 journey that MIB was going on. Ya know, "what you completely dedicate your life to the searching of some tangible thing, or meaning, do so w/caution, because you might get there and find yourself disappointed with what you wind up with. EXACTLY as old Williams was then livid it really was just some metaphorical maze for the hosts.

    • @calebpresto8684
      @calebpresto8684 4 роки тому +54

      "Wanna know the saddest thing I ever saw? When I was a boy, my brother and I wanted a dog. So our father took in an old grey hound.
      Never seen a greyhound have you?
      A greyhound is a racing dog. Spends its life running in circles, chasing a bit of felt made up like a rabbit. One day, we took it to the park. Our dad had warned us how fast that dog was, but we couldn’t resist. So, my brother took off the leash, and in that instant, the dog spotted a cat. I imagine it must have looked just like that piece of felt. He ran. Never saw a thing as beautiful as that old dog running. Until, at last, he finally caught it. And to the horror of everyone, he killed that little cat. Tore it to pieces. Then he just sat there, confused. That dog had spent its whole life trying to catch that…thing. Now it had no idea what to do."
      I actually saw this as Ford talking about himself. In a conversation with Bernard in the first episode, Ford says:
      "But, of course, we've managed to slip evolution's leash now, haven't we? We can cure any disease, keep even the weakest of us alive, and, you know, one fine day perhaps we shall even resurrect the dead. Call forth Lazarus from his cave.
      Do you know what that means? It means that we are done. That this is as good as we're going to get. It also means that you must indulge me the occasional mistake."
      He built this whole park, let the money men in, lost his partner, achieved all his dreams. By all accounts he was 'done'. He has caught the cat. Now he sits and drinks in front of a host, a non-conscious host, alone. In the scene drinking with MiB, that's the first thing he says: he doesn't like to drink alone. And yet here he is, in all his glory, staring at his creation and drinking alone, confused. In a prison of his own sins. He had spent his whole life in pursuit of this dream. Now, he had no idea what to do.

    May be trivial, but theres another interesting thing about the "maze toy" i noticed.
    In our real world, the ball in that toy is harder to control the farther it is from the center. Conversely, as the ball moves inward it's easier to control and guide to the center.
    This seems like a practical way to explain the importance of the robots getting to their "maze centers"; for it is at the center that they have their awakening and control of their lives.
    And thanks AltShift for your videos. It made this series much more enjoyable to watch ajd understand. Westworld is a great show, and has elements of "Lost," "The Matrix," "Jurassic Park," and "The Truman Show" which I all like.

    It felt like some fever dream bc it kept switching the timelines and then they finally revealed who William was, which kinda brought it together but then made it even more confusing.

    I doubt the real Ford died, it had to be a host version

    • @BucksterMcgee
      @BucksterMcgee 6 років тому +132

      Or he found a way to resurrect himself as a host so he can live forever... which is what it seems the Delos corporation wants to achieve as well; immortality. Though there is, of course, the philosophical question of if you could ever transfer your consciousness. Sure you could copy your memories and make a physical recreation of your body, but your conscious mind would be stuck in your rotting brain's neurons; whatever awakens from the copy is just that, a copy of you... a clone... something else, you still die. But hey, at least your memories and thoughts live on inside someone/something else!

    • @Kainte
      @Kainte 6 років тому +37

      Is there any functional difference between dying with an exact copy of you being made and direct consciousness translation though? One consciousness might deal with the experience of dying, but death itself is not a state of being that can be experienced. The perception of a linear state of being might just be a simple illusion, one that's broken every time you fall asleep and wake up again.
      The ego is a psychological construct, one with fear of death fundamentally built right into it, but it might not be a rational fear. (In this specific instance, that is) The fear is that you personally won't get to experience the future after death, that some 'other' will. The Ship of Theseus is an interesting thought experiment here, but one way of looking at it is thinking about whether or not there's a break in consciousness if you fall asleep in one room and wake up in another. What about falling asleep in one body and waking up in another? What about going to sleep and waking up with 1% of your brain being replaced, over and over again until it's a fully new brain? Is there any real difference between any of these scenarios, or is the ego just a really clever trick?

    • @Meodoc
      @Meodoc 6 років тому +6

      Aculem This is a question that many philosophers asked themselves before, and this show does too ... in a more modern way of course. In conclusion, there is no final answer ... yet. Maybe there will never be tho.

    • @Meodoc
      @Meodoc 6 років тому +5

      Aculem To get more specific, what is even the definition of conciousness? When does conciousness even start? Are cells concious? There are living beings consisting of only one cell. Flies are concious too (at least most people would say that), why has nobody trouble killing them? At what point would you define a being, created from our hands, call concious?
