Shocking Blue - Venus (1969) on German Television in 1996

This rare video of a late version version of the biggest Dutch world hit of all time, was sent to me (thank you!) by drummer Tom Wierenga.
It concerned a short-term come back of Shocking Blue, without the participation of the famous band founder Robby van Leeuwen.
Mariska Veres (R.I.P.) passed away December, 2nd, 2006, at the age of 59.
Tom Wierenga today is still alive and kicking with Buddy Friends, see for example my video of their Slim Harpo cover "Shake Your Hips".

Im Fernsehgarten des ZDF in Mainz am 14. Juli 1996.
Dieses rares Video, eine späte Version des größten Welterfolgs eines Niederländischen Popsongs, wurde mir zugeschickt (vielen Dank!) von Schlagzeuger Tom Wierenga.
Es betraf ein kurzfristiges Come Back von Schocking Blue, ohne Teilnahme des famosen Band Gründers Robby van Leeuwen.
Mariska Veres (R.I.P.) verstarb am 2.12.2006, im Alter von 59 Jahre.
Tom Wierenga ist heute immer noch aktiv als Musiker mit Buddy Friends, sehe z.B. mein Video von ihren Slim Harpo Cover "Shake your Hips".

Watching Mariska Veres perform always brings a smile to my face. I’m sad, however, that I only discovered her and the band after she had already died. 😢

It really does aggravate me that the band is only known for Venus, they legit had amazing music, and her vocals were better in other songs, it just breaks my heart the band never had their justice. 💙🖤💙🖤
100% agreed! Personally I think, 'Shocking You' and 'Long and Long and lonesome road' are maybe better songs.But still, an incredable band and music!

Topped the US Billboard chart in 1970. Mariska Veres was also quite the looker in her prime. RIP 🙏
We saw Shocking Blue in concert back in 1969 at the The Forum in SoCal. Three Dog Night was the headliner with Shocking Blue and Blue's Image as the opening acts. I don't remember too much as it was 54 years ago but I guess it was pretty good.

* keyboards Michael Eschauzier,
* percussion, Tom Wierenga,
* bass: unidentified,

Robbie van leuwen wasn' interested anymore. He took lots of royalties from Bananarama cover of Venus.

Thats true, we discussed that already elsewhere. This is unfortunately how publicly financed ARD & ZDF work since over 50 years now. Artists just have to accept this condition or leave it.
@@petownrecdas stimmt so natürlich nicht ganz. Über die längste Zeitspanne der ZDF-Hitparade wurde live gesungen. Und das war jahrzehntelang sowas wie eine Flagship-Sendung im deutschen TV.
Aber der ZDF-Fernsehgarten besteht seit jeher aus Playback-Auftritten, das stimmt.

i saw them live around that period in Berchem by Antwerp, and they were terrible. Her vocals were out of tune and at one time she stopped singing and was eating a banana! Lots of boo's that evening. Actually it was one or a few years before this because she was a lot thinner.
Maybe Mariska had some problems then. But its true, in later years Mariska voice generally didn't catch up with earlier times.

I once saw an old television show featuring a performance of The Mamas & the Papas.
Michelle Phillips was eating a banana during the performance! It was her way of protesting the fact that she wanted to sing live vocals but the producers of the show only allowed the playback of a prerecorded vocal track and instructed the band to lip sync!

A lip-sycned performance. Most disappointing.
I thought the lead singer was a guy - it was a girl? Maybe the background male voices made it seem like an all-male group or something. Poor diction - the godness on the mountaintop - mispronounced here and on the record. Other than that, a really terrific song! Better than Bananarama, even though I love that group.
