I saw the water based thing a problem, but you showed that I can work with it! Nice info, thank you!
Pretty interesting take on these! I have a set of them and I used them for my bulletjournal, but not so much anymore... They could be great with watercolor drawings, I'll keep that in mind! Not lightfast, but that's ok if the image is in a sketchbook, or meant to be scanned :)
I like the Triplus Liners a whole lot, especially for journaling and planners because they don't soak through the paper. The stand is very sturdy; you just have to click the top back on itself.
Thanks for the great review Mark. I got a small box to try them and appreciate you showing the water coloring technique. Hours of fun indeed! I have the Staedtler eco soft pencils and enjoying coloring with those too. I also have a small tin of the prismacolor pencils in the botanical series, which are so much fun. Thank you for sharing.
That's so awesome, Rita Muller! I'm glad this was of some benefit and you're having some creative fun! That's what it's all about, right? :)
Great video Mark! 😁 These look very interesting. I think they would definitely work well with an urban artist's sketchbook.
Had a set of 10 of these pens and never thought I could add water and they would work just soo fine. Thanks for sharing! Found a new use for them.
Awesome, Andrea Paints! Thanks for checking this out and letting me know! I'm glad you've got a new use for an old art supply! Cheers! :)
Thanks for the review. I just bought a set a few days ago and I had never thought about adding some water to them!
Thank you so much for this! These are my favourite markers and I never thought to use them with water on purpose. I stumbled across this review after your video about getting out of my comfort zone and this is the perfect solution for me. I love your videos
Wow! Thank you so much for watching and such kind feedback, Adi Loya! I'm glad to hear this and I also enjoy these markers, as well. I'm trying to organize all my art supplies to work them into being more accessible for me. It's not easy because I enjoy painting so much, but these are too much fun _not_ to use! lol! Thank you again! :D
I took a very close look at my set and they are numbered. The color number is stamped at the end of the pen, and it's a 3 digit number plus some sort of other identifier -mine have 'F7' or G7 or some such.
I am looking at mine, right now, and these don't have the numbers. You got lucky! lol! :)
yeah, I've had my set for about 5 months (I did notice you made this video last year) and just noticed it yesterday with good lighting. The stamping is VERY small.
I have the triplus pens and i have to try that technique with my waterbrushes.
I don't know if someone already mentioned this, but to use the stand you need to snap the top two pieces together first to make it sturdy.
I loved this review! I've had these markers for over a year now and mostly use them for writing and small doodles. I never thought to try adding water to them before, so this changed everything for me! Thanks :)
Thank you for the tip, igotaducky, and especially for watching and your kind feedback! Cheers! :)
Great review! I like your take on them, I usually use them for notes for class and stuff because I like how the tip feels on paper.
Thank you so much May May. I agree, the tips of these glides smoothly and cleanly! :)
Cool review! I have been thinking about getting water-soluble pens and graphite, so this is good info. Enjoy them.
I just purchased this set of Steadtler pens today. Thanks for the review and for exploring the capabilities of this product.
This was quite helpful. I have a set of the 20s and not sure how to use them (or why I bought them). I was disappointed that they're not permanent but you helped me see how that could be an advantage, especially in an art journal. BTW, Sharpie has some similar pens that are permanent although I doubt they are lightfast given their low price. I use them for pen and (watercolor) wash where the light fastness isn't so critical. Thanks for the review!
Thank you for checking this out, Fontaine Moore! I'm very happy you found it helpful! Yes, I definitely don't know how much I'd use these for any projects I'd be displaying, openly, but I will say that they've been a lot of fun to use in my sketchbooks. With so many products out there, I'm sure there's lots that compare to these. But, for the price and how I use them, I'm glad I got them! Anyhow, thank you again and be well! :)
Good info, especially how to make them work with water! I will have fun experimenting with that in my journals and cards. THANKS!
Thank you, saved4one2003, for both watching and your comment. I hope you enjoy them! I don't use mine often, but they are so fun when the mood strikes! Stay well! :)
Great review, a new way of using a product I've had for a while and haven't used as much as I had planned.
One of my fave colouring mediums there really good on top of colour pencil to get very deep bright colour pay off there awesome I have to get this bigger set now
do you think these fineliners will work with alcohol markers?
Thx for the great review! I think I have seen these at my local Staples, I’m going to go look as these are exactly what I have been looking for. I was going to go for Sharpies, but I like the water solubility...much more versatile and you can’t beat the price! Thx again
Thank you, Jo Anne Owens, both for watching and for taking the time to share your thoughts. I enjoy these, but admit that I don't spend as much time with them as I'd hoped. They've definitely come in handy for specific projects though. Thank you, again! :)
thank you for this video! i've loved these markers since i was really young and they were a new thing to write with, but never thought of using them as almost a watercolor pen. i learn something everyday, thank you!
I just bought a 48 pack of these (not a pro artist). I really enjoyed this review, thanks. Now I want to get a water brush. I'm not confident enough to use a fine brush for anything, not artist-coordinated enough. 😁
I really hope you enjoy them! I've had them for a while and they continue to perform. Cheers! :)
Well now, I’m so glad I watched this because I have these pens already I almost didn’t. Now I see that applying water will give me some nice blends. Thank you!
I have a set of these I bought for the ergonomic shape, I never thought of trying them with the water brush - thanks for the tip!
I actually bought some of these the other day with the hopes of using them with watercolours over them and didn't realise until I was on my way home that they may not be waterproof, and was really disappointed when when they weren't so I've been using them for journalling instead, but this is great, it's given me a lot of ideas and positivity about them!
Yesterday you taught me to use gel pens with a water brush. Had no idea til you spoke it and I used them...same with these (& my new Arteza fineliners). Prefer bristol...for ZIA's and watercolor. Thx.
Thank you, Judy Morgan! Glad to hear you're enjoying your creative spirit! Wonderful stuff! :)
Great review! Love your art sooooo much, will be watching more of your videos! 🤩
just learned another way to use all my water based markers cool . thanks =)
That's awesome, Puffy Jo! Glad you had a take-away from this one! I'm happy!! :)
Love these for outlining and highlights.
Great review Mark, I've never tought to use these Fineliners with waterbrush lol! i have the small set but know i saw the wonderful 50 pk, set so i will jump on these lol! Thank You Mark Blessing!
Hi Sylvie Dufour! Thank you so much for checking the video out, and especially for your kind feedback! I love using art supplies for what they're intended for, but if they've got a bonus use, well... woohoo! lol! Along with the gel pens I have, my waterbrushes stay quite busy! Thank you again and stay well! Cheers! :)
I'm so glad i found your chanel Mark and i subscribe too because i really enjoy watch your reviews and video, thank you so much for your kind response to me, you touch my heart Mark so Cheers my friend lol!
I'm sincerely grateful for your thoughts, Sylvie, so it's really me who is inspired to thank you! Best wishes!! :)
Oh! Mark, how sweet is that to read your comments, theirs cheers me up and i'm so touch by your Kindness, thank you so much for the Best wishes to me, i need it and i take all of them lol! Have a wonderful evening Mark and Best wishes to you xx
For the stand, you clip the two long narrow parts together, that gives you the stability.
Nice review .. Iv a couple packs of these but I never really use them because they are not light fast .. But Not bad for Water colour journal
Thank you so much for checking this one out, Christian McCann! Anytime I find products that aren't lightfast, I am ready to give up on them - but, then I realize that much of what I draw or doodle remains in a sketchbook. That's when I'll grab that product and just have fun immersing in something different, without worry. Stay well and thank you for your feedback! Cheers! :)
The cap color is very close to the color of the marker. Very nice, since they DON'T list the colors. In the past, I've had markers where the cap and marker dye were so different that I think they only sell because of their low price. Which just shows that we should pay the extra money.
Hi I have a whole load of these pens, I'm a card maker and like to do line drawings, but I never ever thought of trying water with them.....so guess what I'm off to do, lol oh in case you haven't worked it out yet, or someone below has said, to use the stand, you bring it to the back and fold it over on itself that's how it works, hope you get what I mean, it's like if you take all the pens out then close the top, bend the top back and put the pens back in, that might tell you better!
great review,I use these for outlining sketches and the water color thing is good to know, ill probably experiment with that in the future haha. oh and the stand if you fold the lid over into itself it will click closed so it works great lol
Thanks! I've almost bought them for years.
You're welcome, GreenGestalt! :)
I recommend a bigger set, especially because there are much "muted" tones that are very nice for lineart. Like the olive one, but also greyish purples or blues. Also if the smaller sets are much cheaper per pen.
My first colored pencils (as an adult) was Steadtler, they are harder than Prismacolors and they hold up to alot of layering, what stinks- just like the markers your using, is that theirs no color names or numbers, and they don't sell open stock at Blick or other art stores. Oh- I've been using their grafite sets for a long time, their strong as nails when sharpening and although I also have a set of Derwent's grafite, nothing beats Staedtler!! 💗😄
The price of these made me think I would just waste my money buying them.....but u just sold me on them. To use with my black ink and black brush pen art to add a little color...and being g able to use water to drag color is awesome
And there is a 60-piece set for 30-something bucks at Amazon.
I came here after watching your watercolor pencil video (which helped me a lot, thank you!), because I was curious how someone reviews something I would consider as a real "everyday pen". I used it for school and I would never have the idea to do art with it and / or blend it with water. Actually I also didn't like die Staedtler in comparison to the Stabilo Fineliner which I usually used and which I found is a lot smoother, durable and long lasting. I think I actually threw my pack away one day oO :D Now I wonder if my Stabilo also blends with water, I will have to test it after writing the comment. :D
Btw, they are pronounced with a "sh" noise like in shellshock, followed by the t. You would probably write it like "Shtedler"
Thank you so much, toteZitrone! I agree that there are other brands I've come across since this review that I find more suitable that these. I have not tried the Stabilo, so that's peaking my interest, for sure! And thank you , for the pronunciation. I should've figured that! lol! Cheers!
great review and fun experimentation!
Thank you, Stephanie Jimenez!
myself I would go for the spectrum noir specially if you live in the us and want watersoluble markers that are cheaper, if you want a wider color range of choice than go for the tombows as spectrum noir is fairly limited in their colorrange, specially for watercolor sketching, steadtler is however eu based in germany and thus cheaper here than a tombows or spectrum noir... depending on your budget if you are a beginner and not sure how to use these markers they are a great set ;)
PS a red without a darkred usually wil become a richer red with brown I mix those two all the time for a christmassy red on pointsettia's. Specially a Cad Red and Burnt Umber or sepia gives really nice mixes. As to Lightfast I know a bit more: Watersoluble inks and markers are not very often lightfast, the one brand I know who actually are Light fast,if memory serves me right, are the Winsor and Newton watercolor Markers.
Brilliant information, A. Vultink! Thank you for such great insight! I try to limit my purchases to "needs," as my budget only allows for certain luxuries, which I think I've surpassed for the year already! LOL! But, I looked at the Tombows and they look terrific! Never used them, so that's now on my "want" list. I also looked at the Spectrum Noir markers, which also look great. I don't do very much marker work, but it's always fun to try and especially nice to have, when the mood hits. I jumped into the Copic line with a hefty 36 color set. I needed them for a project, so it was justified, but I don't use them often and what I've found is that some pens dried out fast, some are not as strong as others, and I really do not like the case they come in, as they're hard to get in and out when working quickly. That said, there's still a lot of things to try out there, and I've had my eye on those W&N wc markers for a while, now! Thank you again for such great feedback! Made morning! Cheers! :)
I just got a promo set from tombow and they got me *BleeeeP* that I dont have more now,lol I hae a review comming up on my blog this sunday incl colorswatches, only downside i dont have the spetrum noir for a comparison, but @TheFrugalCrafter does, so I compare them along side the zigs,so check for review on the spectrum noirs at Lindsay's :) she has the W&n markers as well as does Marty from Owings art if I'm correct, for lightfast info on the last named markers check the W&N Homepage,as they have the product info either online or in their faq if not you can always mail them to ask for it. And youre welcome. if you want to use markers for actual watercolor look go with w&n as the others are more based on crafting rather than painting: Can be done but again: Just depends on what its for and what you want to spend on it.
PS Jumping on a COPIC set of 36... no wonder you are passed your budget, lol, Sandy Allnock has awesome copic tutorials if you wish to use them in more ways.
Such wonderful feedback! Thank you so much! Will check it all out! Have a GREAT day!
i am so wondering how much you checked out ;p and most of all how you like them, ps wandnewton markers often endup on sale here, dont know why cause they certainly look worth the money... but just just a tip
Great review. 🙆 I've seen that done with Stabilo Point 68 felt tip markers. Using pretty much any good felt tip marker that's water based you might be able to get that same effect and not have a line left behind. Just so there's no confusion of the type of marker I'm talking about, it's below. Staedtler has their Triplus Color markers if you're liking Staedtler's water based ink.

Personally I'd get a pocket size watercolor sketchbook and swatch those colors out. You could swatch out all of the things you find that are water soluble in it and refer back to it. A pocket color chart. 👌
Very comprehensive review
Thank you, mogh1
Can you outline with that and then do an acrylic painting on a canvas?
I Like your voice 😍😍
Well thank you!!! I like your typing! lol! Cheers!
Happy Trees!
Very well presented video
I found the 42 set at Target for 34.99
Nice find! I hope you're enjoying them!! Thanks for the heads up, Jojo Saylor!
@@MDCampbell So far so good. Now im just trying to figure out the name's of colors
Does it have metal body?
No, these are plastic molded bodies. I suspect they are private label, as they look and feel like other brands I've used, but they're still good! In fact, I continue to use these same markers regularly, so I can attest that they hold up. Metal bodies would be frightfully expensive, I think. Cheers!
Great video :)
Thank you so much, Emma Philomena! :)
cool trees
Thank you so much for this review 👌🏻
Hi Ruth! Thank you for checking it out! Cheers!
Maybe this comment is a bit late, but Staedtler is actually pronounced with a 'sh' in the beginning.
Thanks for making it harder.
"Shtetla" is German
