- After a HDD failure, I decided to upgrade my HDD into installing a 2nd drive. I have installed a new OCZ Vertex3 120Gb in the main bay and install a new 500Gb Hitachi HDD in the second bay. Keep on reding below...
Now, Windows 7 and all programs are install on the SSD and all user data such as music, videos, work files, emails and temp files are stored in the second 500Gb HDD.
My OCZ SSD drive cost me 159$ and I got a deal for the Hitachi 500Gb HDD for 99$. It gives a nice performance boost. Bootup, login and launching programs are way quicker. A spare HDD caddy cost me 24$ with the cable.
The Vertex 3 is not the fastest drive around but my computer cannot handle faster drives anyway. It does not use the full capacity of the Vertex 3 anyway but I thought the deal was good and maybe if I change my computer for a recent one sometime down the road, I'll have a fast drive on my hand.
I have reinstall Windows 7 64bit from scratch. Everything whent smooth, no problem were detected and Win 7 also detected that it was an SSD drive and applied all the cesseray changes that these SSD drives requires. Installation was really fast.
I then moove the location of the "user" files to the "D" drive (500Gb Hitachi) along with temporary files and all emails storage from Windows Live Mail. That's it !
that was so cool having this vid available. i was stumbling around scared I was going to break the covers at first and then I decided to go online and see if someone had done it before. thanks. Now I know I won't screw up my covers when I install the second drive.
you're welcome ! thanks for your appreciation !
Oct 2019 - have exact model still in pristine shape.
Going to attempt upgrading both hard drives and Vista to WIN 10
to turn it into dedicated offline video and image editing laptop.
Your excellent video is still helping persons! Thanks!!!
well thank you for your appreciation ! Moving to windows 10 and install an SSD drive is going to be the best upgrade you can offer yourself ! You will clearly see improvement in speed and reactivity even though this is well over 8 year old !
Great video, very clear instructions and great clarity on close ups. please could you tell me what the part number on the cable for the secondary hdd. i cant find the information anywhere, many thanks
Peter Barker Hi, thanks for your appreciation ! you can find the part here www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=222 this is for a DV7-2000 or 3000 series.
***** Thanks for the link, but i was after the original part number so i can source it cheaper, newmodeus is quite expensive..cheers
Peter Barker cheapest way is on ebay I think, search for DV7 3000 caddy or DV7 3000 drive cable and you'll find it, I've seen complete kits for 10$
Thanks man , rvery helpfull video. I have a question , years ago i send my laptop to a technic to fix the fan noise , now that i was following your steps i notice the second hardrive is missing . Does that model came with both of them ? , was i robbed? . Thanks
great job on this video!! thanks, it helped with lots of questions i had.
djey308 you're welcome and thanks for your appreciation !
Great video, very informative. do you know if the primary cable is the same as the secondary one? it looks like it is the same length with same end connector. thanks
Thanks for your appreciation. The cables looks to be the same in mine also, same exact hdd caddy.
Can you replace the factory HDD with every 2.5" ssd? I found a 2.5" sandisk 500gb ssd and would like to know if I can install that one.
yes, there is no issue replacing a 2.5" SSD by another one. The only thing if it is the original one that you are replacing, you might not have the recovery tools available, you'll have to start from scratch, other than that, I see no issue !
Another question . Is it posible to upgrade the video card in this model , i really dont know about technology stuff. Thanks again.
hi
will you please help me out to find the same caddy and cable i will be very thankful to you. or share the link. Thanks
hi, I got it exactly from this provider : www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=222
Do you know where I can find the cable
if you are talking about this particular model, this is where I got the caddy and cable : www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=222
Nice man going to check it. Any idea what hdd the first hdd Is with Windows?
+Avanox thanks for your appreciation ! I am not sure I understand your question correctly though... the OS is installed on the larger bay where you have the two SO-DIMM memory modules. The second drive bay is the smallest lid, the second one I remove in the clip. This is your second drive.
I still use this computer to this day and I did replace the 120GB OCZ drive by a Samsung 840PRO 256GB drive. My next step will be to upgrade to a Samsung 850EVO 1TB and remove the second drive. This laptop still rocks and has excellent performance for my need.
SSD drive is the best upgrade you can get on any system, even older systems performance will be greatly improved. SSD drives are getting pretty cheap now. 250GB is around 100$, 500GB is around 200$ and 1TB is around 400$ for an excellent drive like the Samsung EVO with 5 year warranty. The 850PRO series have a 10 year warranty but are also more expensive and performance increase won't be notable on older systems like mine.
+Aleziss ok I think it should work. euh but another question, do I need thins things where you click the ssd on ? or is that allready on the standard harddrive , just switching the hdd to ssd with the same bay that is in the laptop is enough right?
Avanox If you replace the primary mechanical drive by a SSD then you do not need to buy any spare parts. The drive caddy and cable will work just right for your SSD.
+Aleziss great looking forward to test. My image is already made just set it on ssd en go!! :-P I keep you informed :-)
Avanox good luck ! By the way, samsung has a nice tool to replicate your drive, no need to do an image. But you need a Samsung SSD.
I did it but my computer wouldn't recognize the hard drive I tried with a few different drives with no luck
it is ALWAYS working, it is because you need to initialize the drive. It has nothing to do with the drive brand or model. If you use a 2.5 inch SSD drive, it WILL work once initialize.
In windows 10, Open Start.
Search for Disk Management and click the top result to open the experience.
Right-click the hard drive marked as "Unknown" and "Not Initialized," and select Initialize Disk.
Check the disk to initialize, Select the partition style.
Click the OK button.
I already tried that their is no extra hard drive shwoing up their I done it with my desktop before
I also can't figure out how to find it in the bios
@@dimondlord11 Have you tried the other cable of the other drive ? It will show up for sure in the disk management, no need to go in the bios. Speaking of bios, do you have the latest one ?
@@dimondlord11 I suspect you might have a damaged HDD cable...
nice tut
