There is something to consider about the form and colors of the Darksaber: Tarre Vizsla made it to Mandalorian symbolism. The first lightsabers ever seen were Obi-Wan's and Anakin's in Episode IV. Both are cylindrical and produce a blue pole or rod of plasma. This is what a Jedi Guardian's lightsaber looks like. Mandalorians think differently. In Legends, black is their color of justice, all their officially produced weapons have a lot of straight lines and right angles, and they have long experience with metal blades that are curved like the Darksaber is. Also it is 100% a weapon. There is no knob for length or training settings. You use it to cut something or someone or you don't use it at all.

@@georgewhaley8951 Oh yeah. That sword was built to do one thing, and one thing only: Kill Sith. Either during The Old Republic/Great Sith Wars era or the New Sith Wars Era. Pre Vizsla said Old Republic but Fenn Rau said only 1000 years. The Old Republic is more like 4000.
But the story of the Darksaber would match what is seen in the SWTOR "Deceived" Trailer. And the Mandalorian along side Malgus was apparently named Shae Vizsla so...
Either way, Tarre Vizsla was a Jedi and a Mandalorian and then Ruled as The Mandalore for both a significant length of time and was respected enough to get a massive statue of him built on Mandalore. The only leader we know of to have that honor. And he apparently gave the Vizslas enough legitimacy that they derive their right to rule from him. That is all we know for certain.
He was probably the Jedi Lord of the Mandalorian sector and used the official office of Mandalore to unite the people against the Sith like Alfred the Great did in England.

I get, and love the lore of the darksaber, but I'm sorry, the execution of it looks almost childish. (Flame on, but I stand by it)
It kinda worked as an animated weapon, but on film it's just not right. The color and white highlights are all good (and good connection about the black/justice thing, I hadn't thought of it that way)
The blade being "edged" or flattened....ehhhh, to me doesn't really jive with Mando practicality. Who was it talking to jania about it being a 360 edge? Not to mention that you smack someone w the flat, you'll still dismember. Does that mean that strikes on the flat side hit harder than edge on edge? Plus it just doesn't jive visually with ther general vibe. (And yeah, it's supposed to come from a different view, but still)
And even granting the idea of a Mando viewpoint, I'm sorry, but the hilt looks like it was designed by a kid. I get that a flatter cross section makes sense for grip orientation. Even though it's a frigging Saber which doesn't need it. I can even dig the hand guard in theory. But the overall design looks like something 10yr old me would have come up w.
Here's a thumbnail fic of how IMHO it should look.
The blade sprang out with a weird modulated hiss. It seemed like a hole cut in the universe. A moving negative of reality, with small white arcs of energy crackling up and down it's length.
The hilt was a thick lump in the hand. Over engineered to be reliable it was heavier than a normal saber, and had a beskar ring around the hilt for deflection.

    A few critiques.
1.) When telling the history of the Darksaber in Star Wars Rebels, they make a point to say that Tar Visla was the FIRST Mandalorian Jedi, not only. This indicates that other Mandalorians have been inducted into the Jedi after him, even if we don't know who they are.
2.) Given the Darksabers' color, as well as it's ability to damage Beskar, and the fact that it reacts to its' wielders emotions. I am led to believe that the crystal inside the Darksaber is NOT a kyber crystal, as no other kyber crystal has ever displayed any of these abilities.

Kryat Dragon Pearls are canon. In legends, they make a more powerful blade, likely a result of the refinement process the base kyber crystals undergo within the stomach of a kryat dragon, and they also can produce a black blade. But nothing in legend or canon suggests they are affected by emotion, and nothing in canon says they're usable as a lightsaber crystal at all. But that could change.

I suspect the reason the Darksaber is so powerful is that it uses a black Krayt Dragon Pearl as a focus. In Legends continuity, Krayt Dragon Pearls of any color can be used to create a lightsaber, but doing so is MUCH more difficult than using any other kind of focusing crystal. This difficulty in its creation, as well as its yielding a MUCH more powerful blade, would have appealed to a Mandalorian like Tarre Vizla. The black color of the blade comes from the Krayt Dragon Pearl that was used being black in color - and Krayt Dragon Pearls DO come in black.

The darksaber draws its power from its user. Strengthening under strong emotions like fear, anger, and sadness.
That’s why in Boba Fett it’s mentioned your energy and focus can’t fight the darksaber or it will feel extremely heavy. If you allow it to channel your energy it will become extremely powerful and because it’s creator channeled his force energy into it it can actually predict attacks and danger.
That’s how the death watch leader was able to fight Maul. It’s also why the darksaber is a symbol of a leaders crown. Because it takes a true leader to listen and act on what they are being taught from those who they are trying to lead.

I’ve noticed that while the dark saber did heat up the spear, it didn’t seem to do anything to Mando’s gauntlet. I’m thinking the spear isn’t really 100% beskar like we’ve been told. Or maybe it’s just thinner than mando’s armor so it heats faster.

You're right, the spear being thinner would heat up quicker

    • @AMorphicTool
      @AMorphicTool 2 роки тому +47

The bracers definitely aren't thicker. A spear pole is on average 2.5cm (1") in diameter. They could be the same diameter, but the sheer weight of any metal at 2.5cm at all points would be far too heavy for any mobile humanoid troop. You're going to be lifting both the spear and bracers, some moves relying purely on forearm strength alone. Not to mention Mandalorian troops are specialists in aerial, jetpack based warfare. So Beskar armour would need to be light. Also, consider the biomechanical impact thick plates around all your major joints would have on your movements. You would loose flexibility and mobility purely from that. Any armour designed to fight Jedi, who are legendarily mobile, lacking mobility is an easy way to earn a quick death.
Using purely historical examples of steel plate, because they're the only factual mathematical source, plate armour around the bracers is between 1mm - 1.5mm thick with the thickest examples pushing up to 2.5mm. Again remember to note that Mandalorians need to be agile.
It is also worth mentioning the rarity and therefore cost of Beskar at the time and even during the war with the republic. You'd want to be as economical as possible in both scenarios, albeit for different reasons.
I would make the educated guess that Beskar relies on deflection of strikes rather than pure thickness for stopping an impact, so I would say that logically you'd want to be in the 1mm - 1.5mm range, for an economical, good, light set of bracers. Either the blade didn't impact the bracers in the same way as the spear, on the flat of the blade due to deflection and so the heat was less concentrated, or it was purely a design discrepancy on the studio due to continuity. Either explanation is plausible, but they live in a world of space magic and future tech so, take the words of a random nerd on the internet with a pinch of salt.

There is another material that is resistant to sabers and blasters in addition to beskar. My understanding, albeit a trifle limited on this particular subject, is that beskar is an alloy forged by Mandalorians and not an element unto itself. Supposedly the Mandalorian armorers were the only ones who knew the secret to forging it which is why it's so rare. Ever since the empire laid waste to their homeworld, people believe the secret to its forging to be lost. Again, my understanding on this subject is limited so I may have it all wrong. This next part, however, I'm more knowledgeable about... the OTHER material that can withstand light sabers is 'phrik'. Palpatine's lightsaber was trimmed with it. The Jensaarai (for those who don't know, they are another sect of force wielders who follow a rather odd hybrid of both Jedi and Sith teachings.) forged entire suits of armor covered in it. Jedi who used light-pikes would often cover the staff segment of the pike with phrik so it couldn't be cut during a duel. Phrik was also extremely rare and expensive.

from my speculation, the heating up part is purely cinematic purpose
the saber did not heat up the armor AT ALL during any scene. armor pieces are much thinner than the pole of spear, offer more surface area for saber to touch - physically its much more likely to heat up to the point of red glow
while the sabers' properties remain mysterious, the shape of the blade actually offers less surface area for heating things up than regular lightsaber
i don't think heat is one of the advantages it could possibly has
if anything, i think the shape of the saber is highly over rated, the shape itself doesn't offer any real advantage in combat (or even cutting power)
and more of symbolizing the ideology of the creator
    the only know properties are
    1. it is more sensitive to the user's emotion, often produce electricity on heightened emotion (might have affinity to imbue force powers to the blade, especially force lightning as it also draws from strong emotion; in this case, anger)
    2. it seems to have stronger magnetic pull to other lightsaber, resulting in saber lock (helps with defending against other lightsaber wielders)

Lightsaber blades don't have massive so, not really

    • @bluefaolan
      @bluefaolan 2 роки тому +7

@@Kontakt13 Au contraire, my friend. The shape is especially important if they are made of lasers (or super heated plasma) because the same principle applies with blow torches and actual lasers. If the jet of gas that is coming out the end of a blow torch isn’t fine enough, it heats up stuff-sure, but it doesn’t cut. Same thing goes with lasers-the more narrow the beam of light, at relative temperatures, the faster you’ll cut through things.
Now, of course, if we aren’t dealing with a traditional kyber crystal, and are indeed dealing with a different type of energy source, then yes-it stands to reason that it’s shape may be irrelevant. That said, however, we are both approaching this argument with the assumption that it is the same kind of power source and that it has the same kind of output as a normal lightsaber.
Now, to add to our reasoning as to why shape would matter, it is cannon that training sabers cannot cut through people’s limbs because of two factors: the energy out put has been dampened and the shape of the blade has been altered. A normal lightsaber has a thinner, round blade shape; while a training one has a thicker, more bat like shaped blade. This makes it easier to see, easier to parry, and less deadly. They don’t swap out crystals to achieve this feat, they simple adjust the output of the beam emitter and change the focus of the crystal’s lenses. Now most training sabers are permanently set this way, but someone who understands what’s going on inside the blade could ramp up the power and focus the blade to make it deadly once more. In fact, I think we’ve seen that be part of the plot of something in the past, but I can’t recall. I’m sure that someone can help me figure that one out.
So, to recap-yes we are arguing over whether or not a magic blade that breaks the laws of physics could be affected by certain properties, but in order to do so without descending into a big ol’ d*ck waiving competition, like a bunch of children at the play ground, we have to make certain assumptions about the matter at hand. As such, we are assuming that at least some of our knowledge of how thermodynamics works will apply here. We are assuming that the darksaber has a similar power source as most lightsabers do, and we are also assuming that the only difference between them is the shape of the blade. (Yes we know they are different colors, but no evidence has been shown that, in their universe, that color affects cutting power; although, here-in our world, color is usually a sign of temperature difference, but meh.) Therefore, if the only thing that is different is the shape, then the same principle that we observe in our world probably applies; if something is thinner and has a more clearly defined cutting edge, it will likely cut through things easier. Also, if the heat and energy is more directed, more focused, it will take less time to heat up the beskar than a wider, less focused beam of energy would.

    • @bluefaolan
      @bluefaolan 2 роки тому +1

@@petersavage7904 I’ll assume you meant to say mass, rather than massive, but see my other reply about how wider beams of light, aka lasers, are less efficient and effective at cutting metal than thinner, more focused beams. We are not concerned with mass so much as the beam’s ability to cut based on how narrowly it can go between the molecules of a particular metal. Thinner does, in this case, equal better because it gets in between the spaces of those molecules better than wider ones…

Well,... if you consider the relation of light sabers to lasers, the differing visible colors of various blades seems logical. There are other radiant wave forms that cannot be seen with the naked eye, like Infrared, or ultraviolet. It is possible, then, that the crystal used to create the "Dark" blade is resonating at such a frequency that the body of the blade seems to be a vacuum devoid of light. This could also explain the "Corona effect" given off by the blade. As the wave intensity dissipates, after being emited by the blade, it would slow to a visible state giving the ghostly outline.
So it is possible that the unique skill of a force weilding, disciplined, Mandolorian warrior could channel appropriate energy to "super-charge" a khyber crystal to exhibit such incredible qualities. Creating a legendary version of an iconic weapon.

It could be a possibility, but I don't think the concept and physics of a normal sword apply to the dark saber since the saber is plasma. I think his design is meant to show more of the classic look of a sword rather than a more common saber. And it makes sense because when you consider the similarities Mandalorians and medieval knights share when it comes to armor, sword-wise, etc ; (its alot). And last but not least, Tarre Vizsla is known to be the first and last Mandalorian-Jedi; it is very likely that he wanted to put his cultural touch on his saber.

The edge concentrates the plasma into a smaller space making it burn hotter and more energetically, that is the whole point of it; that is why the darksaber is stronger than normal lightsabers and can cut through things (or at least heat them up) that normal lightsabers cannot. It can still cut with the dull back of the blade and the sides though, the heat and energy is simply concentrated at its edge.

    Something to think about…
When Din Jarin was fighting Guidian, the besskar spear heated up but not the gauntlets. This could be due to how the beskar is tempered for a weapon( that we find out in “BOOK OF BOBA”) BesKar is not suitable for or it’s just not meant to be fashioned in to weapons. With that, Mandolorian blacksmiths would never make a weapon thus any weapon would be made by a non Mandolorian. We learned in the first episode of “ THE MANDOLORIAN” that only the Mandolorian blacksmiths truly know how to work Beskar.
Now the dark saber as you mentioned is shorter, but it is wider than the traditional lightsaber. The modern lightsabers have a blade control for length and power. So depending on the user, they may have a shirt moderately powered blade to suit their strength and stature ( tosas blade) ; Or a longer blade if taller.
It’s possible that the dark saber made so long ago does not have this feature. So the blade being shorter is holding the full power of the Kiber crystal. Thus making it very powerful.
I would imagine that if a Tuscan was gathered for tge Jedi order he too may have a black crystal as they are warriors like the Mandolorian’s.

@@marcodoe4690 Yeah, it was definitely a more cultural reason than a scientific one. Beskar seems to make completely fine weapons, based on how the spear performed.

I think that’s awesome! It’s exactly what id consider ideal for this situation/issue-it’s stronger than any other sabers, but only slightly, so item doesn’t give any significant major advantages, but just in some stalemate situation it could be the deciding factor.
Also, I’m SO glad the idea that it changes people/turns them towards the dark side, has been dropped! That is SO stupid, and unnecessary! There’s already so much stuff like that, it’s nice that this is just a cool object with additional mysterious powers, that DOESNT corrupt people!

I believe that what we see in the dark saber's vis a light trick. Take a lit light bulb and place on a lit projector, on the screen you still see the filament. It's the same trick that happens with sun spots.

We don't know if it is a kyber crystal, or something else that is capable if creating a blade. Another theory is that it is a blade focused through a Krate Dragon Pearl... but definitely stronger. Good video! 👍

Also with the blade being thinner your focusing more energy into a smaller surface area. It's the same idea behind a curved blade, because it's curved your putting all the swings force through a smaller area, increasing cutting ability. If it has the same energy as a standard saber, physically it should be easier to cut things.

It's been known to cut through metals easier due to the edge, the heat is transfer is concentrated to one point and the flat blade makes it so there's less that it needs to cut through to fit the width of the blade, the other cylindrical blades have to cut a wider hole to get through.

I think another thing that makes the Darksaber unique is that it doesn't really require the force to use effectively. There's been tales that sabers aren't as effective in non-force users hands and in the case of crystals so closely bonded to their user they won't even turn on for non-force users. Meanwhile given the weapon's status symbol is been wielded by more non-force users then any saber in history. So perhaps Tar Visla made a weapon for the Mandalorians, not a weapon for himself.

  • @splatterking1171

Because of the mandalorians ownership of beskar, I always felt like that Viszla had used beskar in the making of the of the darksaber, using the metal to guide whay is supposed to the rod of the saber, and thinning it to a blade. Which would also give it it's unique hum when it is in use.

It's also a blade so it's likely not only hotter, but just by its shape it focuses the heat in a much smaller point along the edge while a cylindrical blade is much thicker around thus requiring vastly more heat and time to penetrate an object.
The sides of the blade likely keep the peirced portions of the melting metal hot and melted reducing friction when going through said metal.
Simply said assuming the blade is as thin as 1/2 or 1/4 the width of a cylindrical blade it reduces the amount of metal needed to melt by the same amount not even taking into consideration if it is or isn't hotter.

Seems to me the logical thread would be that the beskar hilt allows it to focus the crystal in a way that other hilts cannot. The hilt is flat and angular, the beskar is unyielding to the crystal and it’s energy, hence an angular and flat blade is produced. This also can take into account the revelation in Boba ep 5, that it is a forged beskar Mando has never seen before. I would like there to be other factors to contribute to this as well. It would be just plain more interesting if it also had a unique crystal of some kind or a mini black hole as a crystal, insert super cool twist here.

I kind of agree since it has shown many different abilities. But it’s hard to say for certain cause manny things can change because the canon always changes. I remember reading that with lightsaber or specific the red saber crystal were design to destroy other lightsabers but I never actually seen that happen. So it’s still debatable.

i think the heat is also probably related to the fact that the blade is narrow compared to other light sabers which are more of a column then a blade. with the dark saber being narrow the blade energy is even more focus'd then it just being shorter, as its pressed into a thinner space, meaning the edge of the dark saber consist of more energy then a normal light saber. since we know beskar can be melted as they forge it.

I think what would be awesome is one of the secrets to becoming a force ghost is when your dying you have a Kyber crystal on you and when you are about to die you will yourself into the Kyber crystal. Then you can say that the dark saber is rare and special because it contains a force ghost in its Kyber crystal. Whether it’s a willow, Nightsister, Force Witch of Dathomir, Jedi or Sith that were taught but it was long forgotten.

if you notice the wall behind where Maul and Palpatine fight, there is a mural that has the jedi fighting the mandalorians, and behind the mandalorians you can see someone holding the dark saber opposite the jedi. Clearly fighting against them. just a little thing i just saw after watching this. Clone wars Season 5 Episode 16, you can pause it as the camera pulls out and see it really well in the last shot of the show.

What would be a cool is if the white glow around the blade wasn't it emitting light, but rather, it's so dark that it's literally absorbing/cutting through the light around it.

I still hold the head cannon that the kyber crystal inside the dark saber is obsidian based. In my mind, it makes the most sense given the blackness of the glass, but also that IT IS glass and therefore would have the white light glow.
Just my thoughts. Love the video. 💖

One of my observations of the blade coloring is that shadow is casted where light falls; and so in purest form the light would be pure white, but while it is contained in a restrictive manner, the light starts to collapse in on itself creating a void within the light field kind of like a contained star that has a black hole at the center without it consuming the sun.

    • @hermitkryb

Perhaps the blade was forged from a dying star, however theoretical that may be xD

The darksaber follows standard weapon balancing rules, in this case :
    Reduced range for increased damage
Other rules that would normally apply are "slower swing for more damage" and "shorter weapons go faster". Both of these don't apply because these blades are just a handle.
Assuming all sabers use the same battery, the shorter blade could have more energy output and therefore more damage?
