Ich war 2010 in der Ehrenformation beim "Grossen Zapfenstreich" zum 100 Jährigen bestehen des Truppenübungsplatzes Grafenwöhr und kann nur bestätigen so etwas mit zu machen ist beeindruckend
...ich war 1974 als "W15"ner in Munster/Oertze bei der Bundeswehr. Wir wollen uns nicht streiten, ob sinnvoll oder nicht, aber ich "musste" damals an einem grossen Zapfenstreich als Fackelträger teilnehmen. Ehrlich gesagt, es war einfach nur beeindruckend!

watching this is amazing...After world war 2 there was never supposed to be a German military again..but division of germany and nato led to 2 seperate military being formed...after the wall came down , germany became unified, im proud of the old prussian tradition in the marches!!as a german i dont want to see war again, but the bundeswehr is a good defense force for europe

hab schon ein paar mal so ein Ding gespielt und ich kann sagen das das schon geil ist, vor allem der Auf- und Abmarsch, grade wenns dann auch noch dunkel ist.......aber leider wissen die meisten Zuschauer nie was sie da eigentlich dargeboten bekommen.....

this is the "big tattoo" of the german army. it is the highest military cermony of the german armed forces. it consists of the marching in with the march of "yorcks chorps" by l. v. beethoven, the serenade and the "big tattoo", which ends with the "prayer" and the german national anthem. it was given for the 50th birthday of the german armed forces, the german "bundeswehr" in front of the "reichstag"building, seat of the german parliament, calle "german bundestag".

@Speedcore02 Das Wachbataillon beim Bundesministerium der Verteidigung wird nach dem "preussischen Exerzierreglement" ausgebildet, die sich zum Teil erheblich von der Formalausbildung unterscheiden (Formationen, Gewehrgriffe usw.)

The Bundeswehr needs to grow! The Heer only has about 60,000 troops, and in total the Bundeswehr has 329,500 men and women (counting the reserve). A far cry from the 15,000,000 that served in the Heer of the Kaiserreich.

The english word for Zapfenstreich is tattoo (that's means close the tap of the barrel = stop boozing go sleeping ;-) )
Zapfen = tap , Streich = strike
In former times an officer hit the tap with his sabre to indicate end of drinking. And that expression 'Zapfenstreich' was also overtaken for the trumpet and horn signals telling the soldiers to go to sleep.
So there's no difference between the english tattoo and the german Zapfenstreich, it's completely the same.
@omerta0414 actually these are using special boots here. These are very loud if they march by. You can´t hear it pretty good because of the loud music.

Actually these shining dark helmets are parade helmets made of plastic. Those grey uniforms of the armed forces clearly don't look like the Wehrmacht's ones. Quite Americanized. Those dark blue uniforms don't look similar either - they are also only the ones of parts of the armed forces. I am no expert in military things, but I know that the air force has such coloured uniforms. But maybe these are also special ones of the Wachbataillon, those units performing the ceremonial stuff.
Question for any German guy - I understand the march & music are traditions pre-dating the Nazi's - were the carrying of flames tradition too?
I wish the commentator would just shut up and let us listen to the music. It's bloody irritating.

This was a very good video, and it was interesting this ceremony. Do you know where one could find the full ceremony? As nice as the ceremony is the old Volksarmee really were the masters of marches and ceremonies, and the Bundeswehr seems to use a more watered down march without goose stepping. The only country of which I can think that uses the old German tradition nowadays is Chile whose ceremonies do mirror this one quite closely.

What kind of a ceremony is this? I saw Gerhard Schroeder introduced amongst the dignitaries, so this must be when he was Chancellor. Is this the rededication of the Reichstag (which I assume is now the Bundestag)?

It's called "Schellenbaum".
Dress uniform with beret is called "kleiner Dienstanzug" (~small dress uniform), with helmet it's called "großer Dienstanzug" (~great dress uniform). The last mentioned is only worn to special occasions (like "großer Zapfenstreich", public pledge of the recruits or military burials.

Ich suche den Einzugsmarsch / Parademarsch der Spielleute vom Anfang des Videos als MP3 Datei. Aber ohne das furchtbare gequatsche des Moderators.
Ich habe schon alles versucht, bekomme aber lediglich den Parademarsch nach Möllendorf.
Das ist aber nicht der Einzugsmarsch vom Anfang, wo nur Trommel und Flöten zu hören sind.
Wäre schön wenn mir jemand einen kleinen Tip geben könnte.

Well its about time for someone from England to acknowledge their true heritage, I salute you, für Gott und Vaterland; WWI and WWII were mainly battles between genetic cousins, until the Ami's got involved (although about 40% of the US Army in 1944 had Anglo Saxon roots and the French were originally a Germanic tribe,i.e.,the Gauls) Charlemagne was also known as Karl der Grosser, nicht wahr!
His capital city (Aachen, Aix de Chappele) lies within the German border as do his mortal remains.

50 Jahre entschieden für den Frieden.
Eine schöne Tradition, die wir beibehlaten und auch wieder ausbauen sollten. Die Bundeswehr ist nunmehr eine Armee die die Demokratie verteidigt, nicht mehr den Allmachtsfantasien eines Einzigen Nachdruck verleiht.
Ja der Friedrich war seiner Zeit weit vorraus! Und sogar unserer....

Tremendous! I was invited to a zapfenstreich in Bonn when I was still a serving officer in the British forces and it left a lasting impression - if a somewhat disturbing one at the time - on me. But now, we need a confident Germany comfortable with it's military to play its part in securing the free world. And particularly in the face of a resurgent Russia!

You are talking about the thing they carry in front of the musicians? That's a "Schellenbaum" or "Turkish Crescent/Jingling Johnnie". Originaly a standards of the Otoman Empire, they made it into european Armys after the wars against the otomans in the second half of the 17th century. In todays German Army they are the standards of the Musiccorps and are some kind of instrument themselves, because there are bells on it that sound while marching.

remember this tradition goes way back before the world wars. WAAAAAAAAAY back. i'm glad they kept it though because alot of other things were thrown away even though they were from before the world wars. don't forget prussia! it is thanks to prussia Germany exists. thanks prussia

das das keine Stahlhelme mehr sind ist richtig. Das ist jetzt eine Art Kunststoff. Das fördert den Tragekomfort. Weil die Helme dadurch um einiges leichter sind.
Aber die Bauweise usw. ist immer noch die selbe. Das einzige was die zu normalen "Kampfhelmen" unterscheidet ist das diese hier keinen Tarnbezug haben und Blank poliert sind.
@ bear75056: Standards, in german "Feldzeichen" Each troop unit carried an own banner, at which memory plaques and honors were attached.
@bolle2012 here you can see how the "Königgrätzer Marsch" is performed. It´s a famous march which includes the Hohenfriedberger march. So yes, it is played in Germany but not very often because it was very often played during the third reich just like "Badenweiler" or "Helenenmarsch". All these marches are not played very often by the bundeswehr.
How come you play the Hohenfriedberger in Sweden? Its a march about the victory at the battle at hohenfriedberg (germany vs. austria 1868).
Es wird zuviel gequascht, man kann diese tolle Zeremonie besser ohne Kommentare genießen, die "Randfiguren" sind völlig uninteressant.
Kann mir einer eigentlich sagen was die ob die bundeswehr bei paraden immer noch die selbe Uniform anhat oder jetzt bei solchen paraden mit den mützen umherturmelt
Das Problem ist nicht, daß man dieses Zeremoniell als überholt ansehen kann, sondern daß die Demonstranten dieses Zeremoniell nicht nur stören, sondern zerstören wollten. Auch die Deutschen Streitkräfte haben das Recht, sich öffentlich darzustellen, also zu demonstrieren.

@eyederrick: "Zafpenstreich" (a word noones uses today anymore) means in in old times the last call from the walls by a trumpet. It calls the soldiesr back to camp and signals to everyone: time to go to bed - lights off.
