Because in 1956 the East German leadership chose to readopt Wehrmacht style uniforms in order to solidify their claim as being the "Real Germany." The exact opposite happened in the West, where the Bundeswehr adopted American style jackets, coats, tunics, shoulder straps and M1 helmets. These American style uniforms only lasted a few years, but they still kept wearing the M1 until the fall of the Iron curtain in 1989. During the Cold War, many countries were split in half. East Germany was very much as German as it had been before and after WW2, though being of Soviet influence, the Soviets didn't want to make its soldiers look like the Red Army. Prussian traditions were still very much upheld by the Eastern half of Germany while the West was slowly assimilated into the NATO.
You have absolutely no knowledge at all. Prussian identity was still being upheld in West-Germany with the traditional Marksmen festivals being held every years in almost every town. Unlike in East-Germany where these clubs were banned. Defining an entire country just by its military is simply pathetic. West-Germany was never „absorbed“ by NATO by the way. It was through NATO-membership that the Western allies left West-Germany in the first place.

Soviet Russia after 1939 didn't have a problem with Prussian military tradition (which itself strongly influenced the Russian one at least since Tsar Paul, only interrupted briefly by the October Revolution), so to this day the ceremonial marches of the Russian forces are based on Prussian drill. As far as the NVA was concerned, getting rid of swastikas and integrating it with the USSR-dominated Warsaw Pact was good enough reformation for Moscow.
Oh yes, wiping out Prussian lands and turning Konigsberg into a grey soviet shithole was definitely just for fun. Same for the Potsdam garrison church and Breslau

Military parades are sure to greatly contribute to the public relations activities of the German military, which is short of manpower, and to promoting its military power overseas. It may be viewed harshly by the international community, but I definitely want to see it while I'm still alive😢
I was stationed in Germany while this was going on, and the similarities with the old Nazi ceremonies, especially the goose stepping and torches would have freaked the West Germans out. They would definitely not have accepted it. I still remember when I was a youth feeling how ironic it was watching a guard goose stepping in front of the Memorial to the Victims of Fascism and Militarism.
Too bad the Germany of today is sooooooooo afraid of the old Prussian traditions. It's strange how it took, recently, a swift kick in the behind and a Russian invasion of the Ukraine for Germany to build up it's military once more. Sure, I'm an American, but half of my ancestry is German. I understand the second World War scared Germany from being "militarisitsche" because of what Hitler sadly did, but Germany should stand up for themselves once more. They have a proud history, put aside World War ll and be proud of the rest of your history, especially Prussian traditions that helped make Germany great.
We are not “afraid” from our Prussian heritage. Its just that Prussia is viewed differently from each German state. In the ex-Prussian territories, the Marksmen festival is celebrated which has clearly been influenced by the militaristic Prussian culture. ua-cam.com/video/t8qKbjpLOgo/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/cGn7suy-Z20/v-deo.html
The Bundeswehr still performs the Großen Zapfenstreich they did do when Angela Merkel stepped down as Chancellor. They parade frequently, just because they don’t have a Stahlhelm and don’t goosestep doesn't mean there is not a German army with Prussian traditions.
They kept them they just don’t goosestep due to them being light infantry and the uniforms wernt as prussian as the one NVA has, but still isnt a unprussianized uniform, they still use the collar rank insagnia, prussian tittle, cuff grey uniform, shoulder rank except the rank badges are not the same ones the previous wehrmact BGS and NVA and Reichswehr used the boots arent as well high jackboots they are low jackboots, but they still use prussian black with silver belt and parade belt and strap, etc. the marches are also more traditional then bundeswehr as they perform many prussian marches like Regimentgruß Preußen gloria, königgratzer marsch, Etc. They also play the prussian presentation when officials visit, compared to NVA who abandoned all those marches and that presentation song as well. It's interesting seeing the faces of the people watching and the soldiers. It's hard to determine what they're actually thinking/feeling. Being 1989, there seems to be more of a look of unease and uncertainty of what the heck this is all supposed to still mean, with change right around the corner. It's like they're kind of tired of the whole thing, still a bit proud, but also kind of wanting to move on but also a bit sad.
Is it communism or capitalism - - a primal and primitive fascination with fire resurfaces once in a while among the nation that everyday prides itself on culture and technology.
Even though the East-German Zapfenstreich was completely different to the original one from the times of Frederick William the fourth it really looked epic, especially the march passed at the end! :D The only thing which ruins this ceremony is the light! It completely destroys the charm and atmosphere of the torches and makes them useless. That also happened at Merkel‘s Zapfenstreich which really disappointed me :( P.S. Am I blind or where‘s Honecker?
1. Excuse me, are you able to count up to three (in the right order, I mean) ? It was under King Frederick William 3rd (not 4th) that the Great Ceremonial Tattoo was formally introduced into the Prussian Army (after the defeat of Napoleon). 2. The Tattoo you're seeing here is nothing less than a Socialist 'workers & peasants version' which not only is different FROM (not "to") the original, but a meagre and ridiculous caricature thereof. 3. The "only thing that ruins the ceremony" is its cheap theatrical, non-committed or hack performance, which is very much the same as it was under the Nazis, whose faecal brotherhood in mind to 'workers & peasants' Socialism and/or Communism remains undenied.

Some companies charge even more ridiculous prices, such as net film. ru, which wanted me to pay $800 USD for one minute for any of their footage that they have available, without a perpetual license mind you! Which means I'd have to renew the license every 5 years in order to keep it online or it'd be taken down. You can quickly see how this would eat through a persons budget if they had more than one minute of footage. And you can only do so much with one minute of footage! This is also why historical footage is rarely seen these days on the internet, most people and most media companies (which have large budgets) could care less about these subjects because they either don't want to waste money on these films or because they don't see any value in them, or they're completely unaware of them, the latter being the most likely reason. Just think about this, the DDR has existed for 40 years, and they've had military parades every year in its existence, both on May 1st and October 7th respectively and yet there's only 3-4 videos on UA-cam of DDR military parades. All of them are in horrible VHS quality with static audio. When I first purchased a 15 minute preview of these various parades, I was essentially the first outsider on the internet to see them with my own eyes, it was truly amazing how much unique footage was collecting dust!

Modern Germany kept almost all Prussian tradition, just they don't do goose step all the time
The Bundeswehr still performs the Großen Zapfenstreich they did do when Angela Merkel stepped down as Chancellor.
Tradition wise wachtbatallion still does the Großer zapfenstriech and in fact is more to the original prussian one, they also in some special occasions or informal parades wear old Prussian Grenadier uniforms ill send u the link to Prussian traditions Bundeswehr still does

@@usbgaming3367 This is just the unfortunate reality of today's world, I was seriously shocked when I first discovered how much license fees cost.

Kannste laut sagen 3 jahre gedient
@@papabar7252 und hat sicher nicht geschadet denke ich
The ideals of the DDR live on and stand as a reminder that the memory of Rosa Luxemburg also lives on.
Krauts are so fucking aesthetic!
Calling Germans Krauts is like calling Chinese Chinks. As German nationals, you should respectfully call them Deutschländers.
What is the march playing in the start ?
Hello Maximus! Were you born in the GDR, did you live there or did you go to school there? Did you see the National People's Army live or did you serve in it? Or do you only know the GDR and its army from books? Have you ever spoken to a simple, ordinary citizen? If you say no to just one question, please keep your feet still in the future, because you don't know the country and its inhabitants and you can't judge them either.
I think he is just interested in its military. Why do you attack him?

Whats the Marsch at 1:11? Or is it just unspecific drums and flutes for the torchers marching
Vielen herzlichen Dank!!!

Anyone know the name of the song played at 10:38?
No. Sorry but ik one of the songs they played it is lets bravely march together
"Вы жертвою пали" or "Unsterbliche Opfer" in German
Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit
I'd love to know where you got that footage from, sure would be a pleasure for me to upscale it!
I'd spend tons of money just to get these to be fair
I think theres a few on youtube too

What has changed?
To think that all of this show collapsed in a matter of a few days.
When a German military had high standards unlike today's Bundeswehr...
Yep, apparently they are a disgrace. At the same time, nobody wants to arm Germany again. Especially as they now enter an economic crisis, and as their leaders are corrupt to the bone, like Ursula is.
Beards, man buns and long pony tails...
Melancholie... ok, but don`t exaggerate: You know, that we work the problems. Be fair.
What is playing at @06:24?
Die Moorsoldaten.... Lied der Gefangenen des KZ

ICH WILL MEINE DDR ZURÜCK !!!
Die DDR ist Geschichte!
What hapended east german volksarmee personal after the unification? Are they joined Bundesrepublik army?
Around 10% were allowed to join but had their ranks lowered and those that didn't manage to join had their pensions erased which was specifically bad for retirees and those that were ready to retire.
The BRD was really shameless about it
