  • In January 2024, Audi will be competing for the third time in the world's most challenging desert rally with its environmentally friendly vehicle. According to Rolf Michl, the Head of Audi Motorsport, the RS Q e-tron has already proven its capabilities with impressive results in previous Dakar Rallies, including six stage wins and multiple podium finishes. The focus now is to maintain a consistent performance to compete for top spots. The Audi Sport team has carefully analyzed past performances, pinpointing areas for improvement and setting development priorities under the guidance of Dr. Leonardo Pascali, the project's new Technical Director.
Key Focus Areas for Audi's RS Q e-tron:
    1. **Enhanced Safety**: Following accidents in the 2023 Dakar Rally, Audi has prioritized safety upgrades. Dr. Pascali and his team have worked on reducing peak vertical acceleration during landings from jumps. Modifications in springs, dampers, and chassis bump stops, along with seat foam adjustments, aim to distribute impact forces more effectively. The car's crash box design has also been extended to better absorb energy from frontal impacts, like the one experienced by Carlos Sainz.
    2. **Reliability Improvements**: The RS Q e-tron's reliability has been commendable, with all three cars finishing their first Dakar Rally in 2022. The 2023 failures were accident-related, not technical. To enhance reliability, the team has addressed issues like stone penetration causing damage and necessitated wheel changes. New upright fastening elements and robust rims have been introduced, along with stronger sidewalls in the new BF Goodrich tires.
    3. **Increased Comfort**: To support the drivers and co-drivers, Audi has optimized the acoustic shielding and cockpit sealing. Modifications to the front bonnet also improve visibility by reducing mud and water splatter on the windshield.
    4. **Performance Upgrades**: Various aspects, from chassis to software, body to electric drivetrain, have been scrutinized for improvements. The team has optimized the shock absorbers and springs and reduced the weight of various components to counterbalance the heavier, more robust tires. Regulatory changes also favor Audi's T1U model, allowing an increase in maximum output to 286 kW.
    5. **Efficient Maintenance**: Audi Sport has streamlined the daily maintenance process with practical enhancements. These include modified bolted connections, better tool holders, optimized operating fluid systems, new locking mechanisms, and bolted instead of glued connections, leading to quicker and simpler servicing.
Rolf Michl emphasizes the team's readiness for the Dakar Rally, thanks to the engineering team's creative solutions that benefit everyone involved. Audi has been progressively integrating these changes and testing them since mid-year, ensuring that all innovations are in place for the 2024 Dakar Rally.
