    Another good video. Germinate wasn’t a character that I was interested in playing and this video has confirmed it. I may give it a try after seeing how some others playing it. I think they had a cool mechanic for the class but the cards in general don’t seem focused to take advantage of the mechanic. I’m also not a fan of only XP coming from burn actions.

    • @MandatoryQuest

      Yeah I loved the idea of this class, but perhaps in order to keep it fair and balanced they had to stretch it a bit thin. I guess that’s what comes with messing with hand size too much as a core mechanic.

    Phew sorry for the long video, but this one really needed it!
    Ultimately though I think this character might have dropped to the bottom of my list to play in Frosthaven. I was initially really excited about the concept of having 2 hands and more cards, but with all the cards now revealed It just doesn't look as fun as I'd hoped. What do you all think?

      I wonder how effective the cards and perks that you point out as "lazy man" cards would be to help along a focused ranged or focused melee build. Especially considering the loss cards perk, I feel you could really do well to recover the side of cards you want, and allow for longer play time within the appropriate role.
      I was initially uninterested in the class, but I've been slightly more intrigued with time. I DO feel like the power level is lower compared to most of the classes, though.

    • @MandatoryQuest
      @MandatoryQuest  3 роки тому

      @@Dunnston170 this could be a character that can really use those effects well just because of the large hand size. Like I say in the video I typically shy away from them, just because I like the puzzle of navigating turns and trying to have the right elements up and be in the right place. That to me is more satisfying than burning a card to short cut the process typically but maybe the flexibility here will make them more fun and interesting.

    I think you need a holiday after making this video. :) This class honestly never really interested me because it looked like artificial complexity for the sake of complexity without any real reward. Very similar to the Triangles. However with Triangles you can actually do multiple things at once more often and aren't stuck with a hand full of mostly level 1 card at higher levels.

    • @MandatoryQuest
      @MandatoryQuest  3 роки тому +2

      Its taken a lot out of me both this video and the 4 hour stream covering this character. Unlike every other class I'm just not excited for this one any more. I don't really know what I was expecting but I guess like many others I was really sold on a complicated character with loads of card choices originally, but unfortunately maybe due to game balance its all just a bit flat. I'm sure certain people will really get along with the Geminate, and there is probably a good build here but like you said is it going to be worth the effort.

  • @mrfrigof5918

    I think you underestimated the importance of the last perk (double one). You burn cards like a madman and this makes you able to filter your cards in a way that make the character actually very focused around a few non burn cards that you can play repeatedly while keeping the flexibility of the 14 cards and 2 stances. The character is a mess but it makes much more sense playing it than trying to understand it by reading the cards.

    Without a stamina potion this character can lose a card each turn. Long rest to burn a card on 2 occasions. Making it play through round 12. Idk if exhaustion happens at the end of the turn, end of the round, or beginning of the next round during card selection when they cannot do anything. With a stamina potion it makes it through round 13.
    I bring this up because of the mastery which requires you to burn a card every round. If you ever play a scenario having you survive for a set number of rounds, like survive 10 rounds, you will be able to achieve this mastery so long as you play your lost and switch cards correctly.

    • @MandatoryQuest
      @MandatoryQuest  2 роки тому

      Yep I agree I think that mastery will be very easy to do. I think you exhaust technically at the very beginning of a round in which you cant either long rest or play 2 cards. Its been a while since I've had to look up the ruling, but I know in digital it handles it this way. That doesn't mean its 100% correct though because they moved the short rest action to beginning of round too. So if you had to survive 10 rounds and at the end of round 10 you had no cards in hand or in discard you would still win. You just wouldn't be able to play round 11 if that make sense so would exhaust then.

    I think I share your thoughts as well. The Geminate seemed to be a very interesting class at first but after seeing all the cards, a bit underwhelming. Seems like you'll need to try to get a lot of things aligned properly to make things work out, and the end result still seems pretty meh. Might be passing on this as a first char for perhaps the blinkblade whereby each of their cards just seems to be overflowing with excitement. But of course without playing it's hard to accurately predict how the class will perform.
    Looking forward to more class reviews! Cheers and stay safe.

      I try to be careful jumping to conclusions before playing, but this character just feels off. I think the combination of average abilities mixed with a difficult mechanic will discourage many people from playing it. I’m hoping there’s something that might just click once you get playing, but I’m not so sure unfortunately.

    Good video! (From what I've watched so far) I finally started playing Frosthaven and am playing a Geminate. Only level 2 so far and it's been interesting to play but I kinda like it. I will say, I feel like the character would seem impossible to me if it weren't for the bottom of reshape the guise. Randomly losing cards on this kind of character is just very harsh imo. Also, one minor error to what you said. You don't get 7 rounds before needing a rest because after 6 you will have one range and one melee left.
    Already got some good ideas on how to improve after watching!

      Yeah I tried quite hard to find the fun here, but ultimately failed. I’m sure some will find it fun and out together a good build, but it feels like a lot of work for little to no pay off with the power level of your cards. Corrosive Acids is one hell of a card though but 1 good card isn’t enough to save it for me.

    Very late comment, but with FH finally starting to crawl out of the factories and make it's way towards us I'm starting to watch through some of this content.
    For Smoldering Hatred, the concept of Cursing for a double hex is interesting in that it's kind of trading one target now for -1 target later (or possibly -1 target now). Worst case scenario if you draw it on this attack is that you've done the same amount of damage that you would have done had you not cursed yourself - which means that really the worst case scenario is if you draw the curse card on a later bigger attack. Best case scenario you never draw it, or draw it on an Attack 1 Poison or something. So on balance seems mathematically worth it.

  • @kevinerskine3299

    I agree with your summary at the end. I was considering starting with the geminite because, from my gaming group, I can't see anyone else dealing with the duality mechanic. So I figured it would never get played otherwise. However, after watching your review, and seeing the cards, it doesn't seem like this character has a well defined role in any group. Whereas the bannerspear is certainly the tank/leader, and blink blade and others will do great dps, this character seems like "that unpredictable guy who often gets in the way, and hurts the party in the process." Quite a bummer actually, with missed potential.

    • @MandatoryQuest
      @MandatoryQuest  2 роки тому

      I'm sure some decent build will be found, and the power of just having so many cards will bear out eventually. However I don't think the majority will ever enjoy finding or playing that build. It's perfectly fine to have the odd character meant for a select type of player, and i guess by making this a starter at least you don't unlock it and stumble into a playstyle you don't enjoy.

    I like complex characters and I too was a bit dissapointed with this class... but... Reshape the Guise... I personally think that is the HUGE gamechanger. I honestly played through entire Gloomhaven and I used long rest like three times... I always hate to lose a round and so I adjusted my gameplay to that (like using only items with Lost effect). (and I‘m therefore glad that FH got some more focus on long rests as I saw in Drifters perks for example)... So being able to short rest and not lose cards at random is amazing. You will never lose a high level card or a card that you just need.... and you will basically never get to that nightmarish trap where you run out of essential cards for one of the forms and exhaust too early... Do I get that right? Is there some catch I‘m not seeing?
    But I too agree this character would probably use some reshaping and focusing. This is the second FH guide I saw after Boneshaper and I was so excited to see how well thought-out Boneshaper is from the start to the end! But thx to Reshape the Guise, the Geminate might still have a chance for me.
    So thx for the guides, I will surely check the rest of them.

    Love the video. First one I see from you, and def not the last!
    I think Im a bit on the contrary with many of the other comments in here. This video moved my interest in it from mid-range to top 1. Choice is between this one now and the shadow guy I was originally intent on playing.
    What I see in the Geminate, are potential. The Geminate can (with proper planning) counter and play on everything Frosthaven can throw at it. High single damage, AoE spells, CC, Healing, Movement, Shields, Retaliate…
    Im thinking, of course you need to have a downside, and for the Geminate, its the hard dmg numbers. Now, being able to control and flex with your abilities like this, going in melee, dsahing out ranged, while both forms can and will deal damage is an enourmos advantage.
    Does your banner spear linger behind after taking a beating? Go melee tank mode
    Does your Boneshaper clog up the hallway with new skeletons? Go long range mode
    Does the Algox Archers pund your squishes? Go in close and CC them down with stuns, immobilize.
    Does enemy melees treathen the party? Immobilize and dash ranged to deal dmg from afar.
    Does the enemy boss have too many hitpoints? I can easily see combos that with a little bit of luck may deal between 30-40 dmg in one single blow. (6dmg +2 buff +poison)*brittle*crit
    There are so many possibitilies in there, and fluently adapting to an evolving battlefield, will sure give me the satisfaction im looking for =)

      Welcome to the channel glad you liked the video! A huge amount of options is also what a lot of people like with Triangles too, and I can see similarities here (probably because it's the same designer) which a lot of people will latch on to and enjoy. The rub with this character though will be how it all stitches together. Elements are a very simple combo once you get used to them, but managing both those and two different hands is going to really test players. I'm always very careful to not write any class off before playing, as the lightbulb usually goes off for me once I start playing. I'm interested to try the Geminate out to see if it all comes together on the battlefield.

    Late to the party, but I just got the game delivered. So now I'm checking all your starting character reviews. I like the calm presentation and I value your opinion of the cards. I'm afraid the geminate isn't even on my list anymore. It only has the 14 cards going for it, but I hardly see any fun cards. Some are half decent when you have the right element, but you can't really generate that yourself unless you use your burn actions. It feels like they nerved everything to much to make up for the 14 cards, which makes the character really meh for me. I do like all the other starting characters though. It's hard choice. I'm leaning towards the blinkbade.

    I really feel like Isaac missed an opportunity for a huge evolutionary step of character design. Besides having two separate hands of cards for one character, which is still a pretty cool idea, here's also what I would have done to go "all out, break the mold, go ham", as you like to say😆. This character would only level up 5 times to Level 6. The reasoning behind this is that most characters will still have one or two level 1 or level X cards in their hand even at level 9 because they have a larger hand size than cards received from leveling up. (Obviously, an adjustment would have needed to be made to the experience points necessary for level up, but this is a unique character, so let's change that too. Why not? lol) Then, instead of choosing between only two cards at level up, you would have chosen between two melee cards AND two ranged cards, taking one of each. Not only would this allow for more interesting card designs for each side, it also expands the opportunities for builds. That said, I personally am still interested in playing this class and look forward to it.

    • @MandatoryQuest
      @MandatoryQuest  2 роки тому +1

      This character is a Marcel design (Triangles and Diviner too) so although I'm sure Isaac was involved it's not his baby. I do like the idea of just breaking the level up system completely, but it's also tied to the scenario level and scaling difficulty in the game so I guess could cause issues. I'm all for experimenting with that though, and that's some nice ideas for sure.

    100% your missing the power. I see 3 distinct builds which show in the lvl 9 cards.
    Build 1: left side tank/melee and use right burns that enhance and right cards that meld well with the positioning, you'll be in as a kinda flanker tank that jumps behind enemy lines. Also right would use moves and self heals. Take left lvl 9 card
    Build 2: support/range damage, reverse what I said at the top. Take right lvl 9
    BUILD 3: MAXIMUM DAMAGE SWITCHING. Here you need to take the switch on short rest card, "Think mark!" That means you swap before you pick your cards. This means you switch back and forth to maximize damage and use positioning. Which you would take both lvl 8.

    Late to comment, but I’m seeing this class as a sadomasochistic red mage. Jack of all trades, master of none. These archetypes are hard to make stand out from classes that are tightly-focused. Germinate may be best in 4 player where they can just fill in what the party needs.

    Let's reevaluate Feeding Frenzy. Feeding Frenzy is the Lvl X card for the Melee side. It states, "whenever you kill one or more enemies during your turn, you may switch forms or ignore any switch form icons at the end of that turn." While this could be interpreted as an easy way to avoid the form switching mechanic this character has, there is the other side of the coin. This card lets you switch forms without resting or playing a form switch card. This gives you the chance to set up an element with one card and swap into the other form to use the element in the next round. Though it is conditional since you are not guaranteed in killing an enemy when you want every time, possibly whiffing on a form change you wanted, it still provides a unique opportunity to swap states. With the Range forms Lvl X card Reshape the Guise you can swap forms when short resting not just long resting. While it might be overkill normally to have both of these cards active at once, one of the Masteries on the Character card is to swap forms every round. This seems like the easier of the 2 Masteries to go for first assuming we set are selves up with a multitude of ways to change forms.

      Banner Spear - The banner summon within range 3 feels pretty easy, or at least easier to do early on.
      Blinkblade - Never be targeted by an attack (quite selfish but could be done very easily!)
      Drifter - Both of them seem plausible depending on scenario
      Geminate - Lose a card every round should be very easy to do if you plan it out

For the purposes of getting the Mastery on the Character sheet, switching forms every round, Reshape the Guise will be very helpful. Just want to clarify what round short rest is

    • @MandatoryQuest
      @MandatoryQuest  3 роки тому

      In GH it’s an option at the end of the current round. In GH digital it’s an option at the beginning of the round. I think this is a consideration to the fact many people playing physical would often go “ooops I meant to short rest” and in a board game you can just allow that, but in Digital you couldn’t roll back once you’ve gone forward a round. Not sure what the FH rules will be.

    Dang this character was one I was really excited about. Looks like too much set up, and being in the right place at the right time to be consistently good. Looks like a lot of dead or boring turns and the "fun" turns don't seem as good as other characters "fun" turns. Also this character relies too much on absorbing elements to get their own combos going and I find that annoying to the other players who are trying to set themselves up. Overall too many what ifs and downsides for me to even consider picking this one over any of the other characters. Don't even want this character in my comp, hopefully my group sees that as well.

    The level 7 ones' tops create the pair of elements needed for the bottom ability, so this way you can use the top, then some burn bottom, recover the level 7 card and then use its bottom at full force the next turn - while also being able to cycle cards again.

    For the level 8 cards the phrase"55 initiative is better" is a phrase I don't think anyone should ever say. At that point later initiatives are better just because you can plan to go last. It's better to almost guarantee you will go last rather than be right in the middle.

    Honestly this character is so well designed. 3 different builds. 8 level ups, 7 cards each hand. So if you want to maximize a role grab all cards of one side except lvl 5 you grab opposite 7+1. You'll notice most of the lvl 1 cards are good for the opposite side, this is all by design. 3rd option is just forgoing the set up stuff grabbing all damage and switching cards, so both lvl 8s. Creating a constant damage dealer, that just swaps back and forth. I think option 3 is good in smaller group depending on partner, where supporting/tanking may has less value.

      It's one for me I just need to get stuck into and play to really understand. I've always been a fan of high versatility characters (switching play order up each rest) and my worry with Geminate is that you could be forced into having to do certain things at certain times, otherwise you'll really mess yourself up. There's certainly a huge amount you can do at higher levels, but will the levelling process be enjoyable enough to stick it out. Some people will fall in love with this class, but I also think a lot of people will tire of its complexity vs payoff. The proof will be in the eating as they say.

      I see what you mean. The difference between the dream of switching to better deal with a situation (like start range hit target, run in melee attack until dead, switch to range to hit new target) vs making suboptimal plays because cards force a switch.(in backline, forced into melee with no melee targets available))

    I was thinking about what would go well with the Geminate as a duo and thought of 2 characters both from JotL ( the only Gloomhaven i own). I think the Red Guard and Voidwarden would both pair well with the different sides of the Geminate.
    Red Guard would pair well with the Range side of the Geminate. The Red Guard can be the frontline in a scenario while the Geminate is in the back using its ranged attacks. The Red Guard has good shielding for tanking, some heal for sustain, pull effects to line up enemies for wombo combo with the Geminates attacks, and best of all he generates both fire and light easily. The Geminate could abuse the element creation in this combo and excel at pumping out damage without worrying to much about the enemies not positioning correctly.
    The Voidwarden would pair nicely with the melee side of the Geminate. Even though the Voidwarden generates mostly dark, she still can create a usable amount of ice. But element support isnt where this duo combo will shine, its with heal, status and curse support. Sap Warmth will provide a heal 1 for the Geminate to remove the Negative Conditions, poison and wound, it acquires to boost its attacks. The Voidwarden has a handful of cards to poison enemies, and the Geminate has Hornet Stingers to get a big poison AoE to enhance the damage of his next attacks on the targets. Some heals and curses from the Voidwarden will help the Geminate sustain the scenario as its the frontline bruiser.
    Both on paper seem like great duos to synergize differently with this characters kit. While I am looking forward to playing with the new Frosthaven character in my campaign, I thought it would be interesting to note how strong of a team these 2 could be for the Geminate.

      I answered you in the Discord but I’ll copy/paste my response here too 😊
      @doubledose#8573 Yeah not a bad idea both of those would certainly smooth things out for the Geminate. Like you said though it’s fairly unlikely anyone will mix JoTL and FH at least initially when the game is brand new. I think many people will leave the Geminate until later and go back and play it when the times right and there are hopefully some other FH complementary mercenaries unlocked. If you can get over some of the drawbacks with some good team synergy the Geminate will shine I expect.

    Great video! Surprisingly, the Geminate feels a lot like the Tinkerer. They're both kind of support classes, but not in the traditional sense; they are meant to fill all the holes that a party has. In this sense, I wouldn't look at them as a damage focused character at all (as I initially thought when I saw it forever ago). Instead, it has enough variety that it can just help wherever...
    Hopefully the Geminate does this character type better than the Tinkerer did. But I imagine card choices will be hugely dependent on what other characters are in the party.

    • @MandatoryQuest
      @MandatoryQuest  3 роки тому +3

      That’s a good way of seeing them actually, kind of a reworked and more interesting Tinkerer. The Tinkerer did end up being one of the worst characters though, so we will see I guess. The Tinkerer also doesn’t have to deal with being in the right form or having the right elements infused to be effective. We shall see perhaps Geminate will shine early on in low level parties just like the tinkerer but ultimately fall off as other characters get more powerful and focused with their builds.

    Did I see it correctly that this character has 4 X cards on top of the 14 Level 1 cards? Which makes sense, as we really have "two" decks in one, each containing 7 L1 and 2 X cards (at the beginning)...

    • @MandatoryQuest
      @MandatoryQuest  3 роки тому

      Yep you have 9 melee and 9 ranged cards to choose from at level 1, but really I guess its better to think of it as 7/9 and 7/9 as you cant mix them.

      @MandatoryQuest  3 роки тому +1

      It’s not really, but it’s a combo piece of sorts and is a decent buff that doesn’t require you to play it every turn. If you can nuke a bunch of enemies and kill them quickly that’s quite a big swing in the players favour. However a lot of this classes cards are conditional or setup required which makes the character in general less flexible and underwhelming in my opinion. TLDR it’s the best of a bad bunch.

      @@MandatoryQuest in general i think it is very good for the game that a 14 cards character does not have access to very strong cards. both burn and non burn cards standard must be less effective for keeping game balance, at least comparing to standard GH 9/10 cards character.

    • @imbaba1976
      @imbaba1976 3 роки тому

      About the Geminate character, i find it very interesting and requires a lot of planning. The self inflicted conditions force players to plan many turn in advance ... self muddling is ok if you dont plan to attack next turn. Also i think it's the first multidimensional character in GH/FH where you can do different things within the same scenario and can adapt very well to many party composition..

    • @imbaba1976
      @imbaba1976 3 роки тому

      I totally agree with you on the need of long resting for this class. I think that with a major stamina potion (assuming it has been nerfed liked in JOTL). Recovering 2 cards - one for each form - during first rest cycle give you 8 rounds without resting. For the rest of the game the perfect balance in terms of longevity is to burn 1 card of 1 form and then discard a card of the same form

    Chunky content, but great stuff. Sorry to read below you're off the Geminate now compared to the first blush, but I get it. FWIW you 'saved' Triangles for me, so perhaps I'll feel the way when I first sit down with Geminate.

      Apparently Geminate when being played has the same vibe as Triangles so who knows. Perhaps it’s going to take really getting into the character in game to really work it out. I’m still not a huge Triangles fan but no doubt it has its fans, and so will the Geminate I expect.

      I think he’s a bit of a mad genius, a lot of his designs go over my head personally but I know some really enjoy what he’s made. I think there’s space for thinky clever classes in FH and by putting one as a starter at least that gives people the option to use (or not use) that character rather than unlock it and find out it’s not for them.
