My party does this. And while I love to hear them find the character voice and backstory, I have had to have the adventure find them. This is something they asked me to do if they get to carried away in rp.
I had a session where we did a maybe 30 minute combat and then the party proceeded to talk about the entire backstory of one of the members. All I did was show them what an abyssal chicken was. That was almost 2 hours. It was amazing.
Edit: I did get to have a sinister moment where they noticed a spy escaping just before they could catch them for the end! So I got some fun dm fuckery

Hazel wanting to just lightly defend herself, accidentally brutalizing her enemies, and sobbing into a corn muffin after was an absolute highlight to me.
The characterization of Hazel is great, and the voice her player makes, basically sounds perfect for a sweet natured cartoon chipmunk lady who doesn't realize she's basically a kleptomaniac.

Whenever I tell that joke I’ve always emphasized that it’s the meanest joke ever
I always knew it as the priest joke and it’s my favorite but I only save it for when people explicitly demand a joke because then they deserve it

I’m loving this, I played a Humblewood adjacent game with a DM who let me play as a Timber Rattlesnake Bard named Sssssylvaine, her rattle and voice were her instruments and her only “magical” ability was imbibing her songs with venom. Most of her skills were performance and persuasion and charisma was her highest stat to combat the fear of snakes that the townsfolk all had.
