I went from zero IT experience to desk top support to sys admin in 9 months. My biggest piece of advice would be to start a home lab and just stay learning anything and everything you can. Also mention your home lab in the interview. My boss told me that's what put me over the top. Hoping to transition to cyber security one day

What home projects would you recommend to place on resume to get a help desk job? Also, how did you go from the help desk to the sys admin? Is that the tier 3 help desk role?

Great advice. I built an active directory home lab. Can you list the type of labs to help with sec plus? And videos that where used?
What do you need for a home lab? Can you start with just a laptop?
Probably the best podcast I’ve seen about becoming a SOC analyst. I’m working the helpdesk right now and pushing myself hard outside of work to improve but it makes me feel a lot better that others felt the same way I do as far as stress and frustration and made it to the other side.
Really enjoyed this panel! I recently got a position in infosec specializing in IAM within my company after 5 years of desktop support and help desk. The grind was difficult but worth it

I'm currently using my handy-dandy GI Bill for school. I'm moving from 20+ yrs of military/HR into cyber. Be it in GRC (because I'm no spring chicken & am used to dealing with...strong personalities) or a SOC.
Either way I feel that helpdesk is going to be my initial stepping stone/launch pad. Your panel is pretty much confirming my thoughts and I'll keep on pushing!

I'm 3weeks into helpdesk. I'm really struggling to stay focused on the end goal which is to transition to cyber. I'm slowly starting to settle and my fire is getting dim. Hopefully I find strength to continue pushing
