  • Boxing the wake is an exercise that trains the glider pilot to avoid the wing tip vortex turbulence and maneuver in relation to the tow plane. It is a required maneuver on both private and commercial pilot checkrides.
    Maneuvering the glider in relation to the towplane involves using reference points to avoid wake turbulence and resisting the forces acting upon the glider by the tow rope to pull it back toward the center.
    Learning to fly behind the towplane with precsion is one of the most challanging tasks the beginner glider pilot must master before being advancing to solo flight.
