  • In this Pacific War Podcast Craig and Gaurav talk about underrated moments of the Pacific War.
Craig and Gaurav discuess underrated aspects of the Pacific War, particularly submarine warfare. They highlight the initial issues with US MARK 14/15 torpedoes and the subsequent improvements that drastically increased their effectiveness against Japanese merchant shipping. They also touch on Japan's lack of effective anti-submarine tactics and convoy protection, contrasting it with the successful British strategies in the Atlantic. The discussion underscores the critical impact of submarine warfare on the Pacific Theater's outcome.
Craig and Gaurav also talk about the Kokoda Track campaign in New Guinea during WWII and how it was a testament to the brutal and unforgiving conditions of the Pacific theater. Australian forces faced immense challenges, with one instance recounting a lone Corporal found dead surrounded by 30 Japanese corpses, some killed in close combat. The campaign was marked by relentless fighting, harsh terrain, and severe logistical issues. The Japanese offensive extended to the point where they could see their target, Port Moresby, before being forced into a grueling retreat. This withdrawal, coupled with the Australian and American counteroffensive, highlighted the extreme endurance required from all sides. The campaign was characterized by the immense difficulty in supplying troops, often relying on local populations for support. The tenacity of the Japanese forces, despite dwindling supplies and continuous retreats, underscored their determination. This campaign, often overshadowed by larger battles, was crucial in the Pacific war, reflecting the severe hardships endured by the soldiers involved.
Lastly Craig and Gaurav talk about the significance of the Soviet entry into the Pacific War in 1945.
Hirohito navigated between endorsing military actions and the political constraints of his position. Japan faced dire strategic challenges, including resource limitations and geopolitical threats from the Soviet Union and the United States. In the end it was the Soviet invasion of Manchuria, Mengjiang and Korea that ultimately pushed Emperor Hirohito to agree to a surrender.

Yeah I find it borderline criminal that there isn't enough on the New Guinea campaign. My great uncle fought there.
