I had the opportunity to head down to a public swamp for the second day of the 2020 November duck hunting split in Virginia. I linked up with a group of guys who were local to the area and we headed out early in our kayaks to try and get a timber hole spot they had been scouting. Unfortunately we ended up in plan B but we were still able to get under enough birds to have an awesome morning. We made the most of our opportunities and ended with a mixed bag of wigeon, mallards, and teal. Hope y'all enjoy and be sure to subscribe if you do!

Really enjoyed this hunt but I have to say my favorite duck above all is the wigeon for puddle ducks, and redhead for divers
Thanks brother! Those cotton tops are just incredible birds and I love their whistle. Still need to get a drake redhead but cans take the cake for me for divers
I agree- my favorites as well.
That woodie shot was absolutely incredible!!! Good stuff man!
Thanks brother! Been pretty confident in my shooting lately
Good luck out in Texas! Looking forward to following along with your adventures out there!!! 🤠
Thanks Tim! I appreciate it!
This channel deserves way more hype!!
Congrata on the new job! Can't wait to see what comes out of texas. The weather is finally starting to shift up here in VT and sunday looks to be the best day of the season. 10-14 from the north, snow and 30 degrees with Canada hopefully icing up!
Thanks Derek! Good luck up there this weekend! Let me know how it goes
Wood ducks and canvasbacks are my two favorite ducks. Both are very good looking birds! Awesome video man, keep up with the good work!
Thanks brother! Those are two good picks, great table fare with both
Damn good hunt for sure, definitely a hunt I won’t forget, glad we could have you out with us.
Yessir! Really appreciate y'all having me along. Hopefully we can do it again next season or for late goose
Hopefully we can get together for late goose. Typically have a few around on private no 12AM mornings this time! A rare group of snows hanging out this week in the area as well
Nice hunt fellas. Gives me hope there are some birds still in Virginia
Congratulations on the TX opportunity
First of all, congratulations on the job! Definitely right up your alley. Have enjoyed following your journey over the last few years and have definitely seen the progression of your videos. Great hunt as always and be safe.
Maybe just maybe, you can post up some videos from texas.
Til we see you again, happy hunting.
Thanks Shawn! I'm sure I'll have some Texas videos from the Christmas period at least. Good luck to you this season back east!
Wigeon, pintail, or canvasback have to be my favorites. Can’t wait till I got one of those! Mostly woodies and mallards where we hunt.
I know some guys who have good pintails in the valley. Just gotta get lucky I guess
Thanks for the video Thomas. Looked like a good and successful time.
Good luck on your Texas adventure. Saw some of the pictures you posted on FB. Great area to hunt waterfowl in Texas. I had 5 leases just south of Austin. Hunted small to large stock ponds. The area you are in gets lots of spices geese and cranes I didn't get to hunt in central Texas.
Good luck !
Thanks Sly! It certainly seems to be a waterfowl mecca down here. Got to experience my first crane hunt just the other day, it was incredible!
Nice hunt Yung Thomas! That's quite the mixed bag. Hopefully we'll see some more wigeon in KS
Lots of em around here (South Central KS).
Thanks Matt! Hopefully they're here in the morning!
Enjoyed having you out man. Anytime you wanna go you're welcome to join. Best of luck in Texas and with the flyways collab look forward to the videos
Thanks Johnny! Leaving here in the morning to head up for the collab!
Hey man been a huge fan of your channel for a long time . Loved your videos. keep up the good work 👍
Thanks Logan!! I really appreciate the support! More videos should be coming pretty soon
Great video as always my man!
Thanks brother!
Nice group of guys and nice mix bag of ducks. Enjoy your videos 👍
Thank you! I appreciate you watching them!
Good stuff! Keep the content coming.
Nice hunt! Pintail and wigeon are my favorites!
Thanks man! Great picks there
Awesome hunt! Excited to see the work from Texas 🤙🏼
Thanks Chris!! Should be some Kansas and Texas hunts coming out soon
Totally jelly of that widgy great video GooseFace!
Thank Kevin! I'll trade some of those mallard bands for a few wigeon
To eat: Teal and a close second would be the Wood Duck
Agreed
I think wood duck is first but agreed
Partly agree wood duck are better if you soak them in water
Widgeon and pintail are definitely my favorite duck closely followed by red heads.
Dang he got all drakes!!! My fav duck is the good mallard!! Keep up the great work love the vids.
Thanks man! I try to pick out drakes but definitely just got lucky on this hunt
That’s awesome
Great little spot. Nice widgeon too...
Thanks Kraig!
Really love your videos man keep it up. My favorite duck that I have shot has to be a black duck or bufflehead
You did it again! Gonna miss the VA hunting videos man. But y’all are gonna smoke em out in Texas.
I'll hopefully have some late goose vid from Virginia at least! Texas has already been incredible though so I can't say I'm missing the east coast too much right now
Greenies, mallards. I actually used to have a hatband for my cowboy hat made completely with the curled pin feathers !!
Thanks awesome! I need to start pulling curls and pins
I'm 15 and got my first ever canvasback. That is probably my favorite duck to hunt just because I've gotten all the other ducks commonly but the cans hit diff.
Congrats brother! I feel you on those Canvaebacks, they’re right up there for me
Down here in Louisiana, I got to say wood ducks and green wing teal are most people’s fav.
Hard to beat those two when it comes to table fare
Great hunt! All the best for Texas.
Thanks man! Good luck to you this season as well
Pintail, redhead, and Canada goose
Also right there with ya on the black ducks. Hard to beat em.
Yes sir! Always super rewarding when you get them in the decoys!
Good stuff, got our support.
Thank you!
Great hunt Thomas........
Thanks Matt!!
Wassup man love the videos
Thanks man! Chilling out here at the lodge this evening. How about you?
@@HokeOutdoors just at the house not doing much
Blue wings are my favorite
Gonna miss the East Coast Hunts! Best of luck to you in Texas though!
Thanks man! I’m gonna miss it too but this was too good of an opportunity to turn down
Awesome VA public hunt, nice work. Hate this is your last one. I just put up my solo mallard greenhead limit video, check it out. Didn't get the kill shots on camera unfortunately, nice double. 2 mallard limit is a bummer in NC. Take care
Thanks brother! I'll be sure to check it out this evening. Hope y'all have a great third split back east!
Great hunt buddy, and I have to say that you are OVERLY NICE, when it comes to who killed the bird. You made some great shots, that you didnt claim. Congrats buddy, and God Bless, and Good luck with the new job!👍🤗🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks brother! I never want to claim a bird that might be someone else’s
@@HokeOutdoors You sure dont have to worry about that!!!🤗 You are an outstanding gentleman in the field!!!👍👍👍
Agreed
Great video my favorite duck up here where I am in Ontario Canada has to be the wood duck only cause here not alot of them then next has to be Mallard
Thank you! Wood duck and mallards are a lot of fun for sure!
Love the vids.
Thanks man!
I swear you hunt the thickest most hard spots to recover birds in. My favorite duck to shoot is the Bull cans. We get a lot of them in my area, probably wigeon second.
Haha it's certainly not by choice but we just got where the birds are. They like those thick cover areas a lot around here
No question on my favorite duck.. Canvasback!
Still hoping to get my first bull this season!
Have you hunted Lawson’s Creek? Thinking about driving up from nc and checking it out.
I can't say I have but I know that general area can be pretty decent when the weather is right
Thomas be trimmin' trees...😉🤘
Haha for real
I also really love your solo hunts so if possible let’s see some of those
I'll probably have some of those later this season from Texas
this is a great hunt. i currently live in Virginia. I have Decoys, Calls, and a Kayak. I would love to meet up this season and hunt with some people that like this sport as much as I do.
Thanks Roy! I'm not sure how much I'll be hunting VA this season but if I'm around I'm always down to hunt with new people!
What part of VA
Favorite ducks is wood ducks and mallards, have been seeing some black ducks in my area, waiting for duck and goose to open back up here in NY
Word! Hope you get one of those blacks. Good luck up there this season!
Great hunt!!! I know you won't say where you were, but I was still hoping to know what part of Virginia. Near the beach, Richmond, Nova or west?
Thank you! This was central Virginia, a little ways south of Richmond

Is this in central va
Virginia looks an awesome state to duck hunt I’m getting a bit tired of shooting gadwalls and spoonies in Texas
We definitely can get some variety out here but overall I’d say Texas is way better hunting. On the slow days in VA there aren’t any gadwall or spoonies to save the day unfortunately
Nice bunch of birds
Thanks Chuck!
Quality content.
Thanks brother!
Definitely a wood duck has to be my favorite
Hard to beat the squealers in a tight swamp hole!
My favorite is wood ducks, and gadwall
My favorite duck to shoot would have to be widgeon!🦆
drake gadwall, drake mallard and a drake pintail are prolly my favorites in my opinion
Good picks there
stud woodie and cotton tops!!!
Yessir!!
You shoot better than half of the other people I see in UA-cam videos
Thanks!
Favorite to eat:Woodies,Mallards,Widgeon,Teal.
Favorite:Widgeon
Nice video.
Thanks Nassser!
I hate that you wont be coming out with as much content as normal for this season. If you come back to NC early next season, I got the spots and I go every single day, hit me up!
I’ll still have quite a few videos coming out this season! I will definitely take you up on that before next season
Hey Thomas it’s Bryson from the awesome crane hunt. Are you making a video out of the footage you got this weekend
Hey Bryson, that footage will be turned into a video but it’ll be for the Stanfield’s UA-cam page and will be released in July or August
Ok
@@HokeOutdoors I uploaded a new video go check it out
Any tips for wood ducks on semi big water?
Do you ever see them landing out there? Spinners would my recommendation to get them to give you a look at least
My favorite duck is pintail
Where you duck hunting in Va?
Central VA
Canvasback!
What WMA was that?
Can’t say
Are you that guy that trespasses on the Pamunkey all the time?
Aren’t we friends on Facebook? How about you send me a pm. Heard from a couple friends now that someone has been spreading this rumor, would like to think it’s not you. I haven’t been on the Pamunkey in 4 years
What gun are you shooting?
Franchi Affinity 3
Good hunt
What part of Virginia. I hunt in NC and ain’t seen no numbers
Central VA. Need some more cold to push them down. It's been tough in VA later in the split as well from what I heard
@@HokeOutdoors 10-4
What public land is this asking for a friend
Ever worried about standing in the water with gators? I know it’s probably stupid considering we carry gun but if one grabs you under you gone. Do we assume that the gators are far in the bank by duck season?
Hooded merganser pintail shoveler teal wood duck and gadwall and mallard and black ducks
Mine is the canvasback
Drake wood duck is my favorite
Love a skyblast.
I tried to count how many times y'all shot and gave up after 150 😂
That December
My first duck on youth day at age ten 18 years ago was a banded black duck.
That’s awesome! Where was it banded?
I would have to pull the paper work out to remember exactly where because it’s been so long but Canada is all I remember.
My seconded mallard I ever killed at the age of ten was banded
Drake Woodie!
Here in Iowa I would say Wood ducks.
Dang what a shoot
Kind of surprised myself with a couple of the shots I made on this hunt
What kinda of choke do u run?
Light modified
Carlsons
@@HokeOutdoors thanks! Love the content! Especially the yak hunts!
Would love to see you do a Sandhill crane hunt while your in Texas.
I'm definitely going to try to set up a crane hunt on one of my days off
My fav is Woody
Where is some good public land too duck hunt in Virginia?
vafwis.dgif.virginia.gov/FindWildlifeVA/#/findGame
Great video but I am pretty sure that was a young drake pintail not a hen
Thanks man! I thought it might be but couldn't tell for sure
Woodduck and mallard
Any duck that flies over Thomas better have their last affairs in order.
Great hunt.
😊
Haha thanks Sam! (do you got by that or Samuel?) I've shot better than typical this season but it's been a welcome surprise
Sam or Sammy is fine. I was a decent shot on ducks especially back in the lead shot days. I used a 1100 3" mag and later got a 1187 3.5" but rarely used 3 " and never shot 3.5. 2 & 3/4 worked for me as I always shot over decoys and 30 - 40 yard shots were norm. Like yourself I didn t mind water blasting and had a mounted pair of blackies I had done like they were coming in with wings cupped and landing gear down. I hung them from the ceiling with monofilament. They looked great pitching in over my TV. I called them and before I could get a bead on one they dropped so low I could no longer see against the lit background so I waited untill I saw the splash of water as they landed and fired a round expecting to see them against the sky again surprised when that didn t happen. I killed both with that first shot, a pretty pair of Canadian red legs.
Now dove shooting especially on opening day I usually averaged 3 - 4 birds per box. Hey, at least I didn t worry about being over the limit.
😊
I found teal to be the best by far with woodies ok. I never shot or tried canvasbacks but heard they are good eating. Mallards are like shoe leather.
Probably Euro wigeons for puddlers, Redheads for divers and Harlequins for sea ducks
I would love to get a euro or a harlequin. How common are the euros out there?
@@HokeOutdoorsI've gotten a few but all were hens and 1 immature drake. I have buddy's that get a handful of mounter worthy ones. Mainly getting them on the lower Columbia and willipa bay
my favorite duck is a canvisback
Teal and gadwall
wow good soot
A madrin duck but then awoodie
I love hunting with other people it’s just when you shoot you usually don’t know who shot it
Dragon run??
