I've always really liked Sera ever since early Nine Muses days. She's such a gracious & kind hearted person. I hope she achieves all of her dreams despite the hard things she has been through.
@BTS Army Music wins didn't truly become a huge focus of kpop until around 3rd gen. During 2nd gen, a lot of groups were popular with the general public despite not having any music show wins. Nine Muses were one of those groups, very well known because several members were frequent regulars on variety shows. They were frequently brought up and praised on TV for being pretty, tall and having stable vocals (the latter of which comes back to Sera, who was one of the main singers in the group).
This is an industry where everyone is beautiful on the outside, like Sera, but can be vastly different on the inside, and at different stages of maturity. Sera expresses this dichotomy perfectly and supports others that are in the same position she was. I just adore this woman.
When I first saw the interview where she mentioned feeling very insecure about her looks compared to the other girls (after having watched the 9muses documentary), I was like....I thought she was the _prettiest_ out of all of them!
I just watched the making of Nine Muses again simply to remind myself just how much these girls go through. Sera, never ever stop singing you beautiful lady.
It's so sad how she used to see herself and deal with thoughts of suicide - she was the one reason I got into ninemuses because I thought she was (and still is) insanely beautiful and captivating, her eyes felt like they were staring into my soul in the best way haha, thank you for being so open and honest about many girls' struggles in the industry, wishing you the best for your bright future ahead
I really have so much respect from her. Even if I don't know her personally. She is incredibly strong. With all she has been through she is so outspoken and opened and soft. I hope nothing will ever hurt her like this time ever again. She deserves the world.
I think there was just pressure tactic involved in part to get girls to make more plastic surgery in part due to pure mean spiritedness. While tall and model proportioned, she is shorter than her groupmates - you can always find something to pitch people against each other, something you can point to and say it's not as pretty as somoene else. It may be a remark meaningless to an external observer with eyes on them, but a person can easily doubt themselves, it is natural.
just so you know Sera, you are helping people around the world, not just the people in k-pop but in other walks of life and other countries. have learned to be stronger because you became stronger, I am learning Korean because you are teaching korean, I am learning k-pop(good and bad) because you are showing me k-pop, My life is better because you are in it(even only through UA-cam) so please stay strong, stay healthy and always know that YOUR beauty shines in my life like a beacon of hope, because I hear you and know you, I was once at some pretty low times in my life (and often still am). So thank you for sharing your strenght, strenght you probably need for yourself but willing give to others PS. while you going through the "things" you are ..like Solo Artist, UA-camr, and Student .. you forgot . you are also a Blessing to others
On one hand, you have the Korean culture that is very very conservative and very private. On the other hand, you have the KPop industry that pushes the sexy image because that's what gets views and sells the music for the agency. So once you become an idol, you will be fighting the battle between your cultural values and your dream job as a girl group member. Add to that the social media keyboard warriors and it's no surprise that idols struggle with their life.
This woman is such a gem. I'm going through a hard time with stress and pressure in med school and what she said really resonated with me. You probably won't read this Sera, but you do give me hope with what you said ❤️

Very nice to hear from from Sera and that she is doing well. One has to worry about all the aspiring idols and everything they go through. I think it would be great if a support group was created with former idols and former aspiring idols to help all the young people deal with all the pressures of attempting to succeed in this industry. Further development of alternative music scenes helps people who love music to realize they do not need to fit into the narrow path of the idol industry to enjoy and share their love of music.
I found 9muses a few months and now they’re one of my favourite bands ever now.. I’m always bittersweet about it because of how much star empire abused their idols, I wish Sera Ryu and all the best in life

I'm not a fan of nine 9muses. I never knew such a band existed or who she is. I got this video recommended on a reddit post. But this was beautiful in every way. I love how she was so real through it all and never gave an outright negative opinion and showed that she still respects who want to continue the idol life despite the hardships. Mad respect to her. Every picture, every video I have seen of her she looks absolutely amazing in every dress and every style. Who is supposedly better looking than her? And that is just her outer beauty. Honestly when I first got to see Sera, I thought she was the most beautiful person I ever saw. So I was surprised when she complained about her looks to her mom.
My peak interest in Kpop was 2010-2012 but never knew much about 9Muses at the time. Heard the songs of course, but never paid any attention to who the members were or anything. So this is practically my first exposure to Sera. And she seems like a thoughtful, levelheaded and lovely person so I'm sure that if I had had an opportunity to learn about her at the time I would have appreciated her. And I'm glad she's doing well these days. In fact the inherent evil of the k-pop business is what drove me away at the time. So while I have no actual first hand experience of it obviously, I totally sympathize the pressures and mental abuse they had to go through. And if I as a mere observer found it hard to stomach, I can only imagine how she felt about it.

The truth is, the kpop industry doesn't care about the mental health or the body shaming of their idols. It's either conform or get out! I think leaving the group was probably the best thing that could have happened for her.
I don't know about Korean beauty standards. But I think on almost any cultural standard Sera is way far prettier than most women. Heck even remove her makeup and she'll show off and stand out as well if not better! Those who think Sera isn't beautiful are either blind or crazy...
