I like where you are headed with your install, well on your way to getting exactly what you want and need. I also had the locking with my FTM-500 and no solution available. Same thing, spinning VFO too fast. I updated the firmware when that came out and I haven't had the same behavior since! Maybe give that a go. Nice video, 73.
Thanks for posting this video. I have a '23 ORP and have the same rear molle panels. I like your solution for mounting the radio back there and running the head unit up front. Gives me some ideas for my install.
Nice install Lew. Did you maybe hit the lock button by mistake? (on/off button) Thanks for sharing just checking mine out now. I'm like you I don't need the newest greatest radio but I really like this radio.
That was the first thing I thought of when I noticed it wasn't responding. I tried to see if being locked was the issue, but the power button itself wouldn't work, either. But yeah, I think it's a pretty good radio for my use case.
Nice install. Done well. Always best to have everything that could become a flying object in an accident bolted down. Glad to see it! Service loops at the radio body and everything. Good stuff! PS: Have you ever ran 100.0Hz tone on your APRS? Cuts out the data burst noise unless someone is also running the same 100.0Hz tone (called 'voice alert' on some radios). Just a suggestion in case you haven't considered it before. As for the mic cord, I'd maybe stick it across from the left to the right behind the head and then let it hang down on the left side. Also, your talk about 'banks' on the 500 is something I've heard several complain about. Unfortunate it is lacking that functionality.
Thanks! I have not tried the 100Hz trick, I'll have to try that out. Also, I'm going to do a follow-up video soon showing how I've changed the head mounting. On the mic cord, that's exactly what I'm doing! Hopefully Yaesu will fix the memory bank issue with a firmware release.
Nice installation, any issues with using the CAT 8 RJ45 Ethernet Cable and not the Yaesu control head extension cable. Will be starting my installation journey this week looking for help
No issues at all. You don't even need to use Cat 8, I just got that one because it's relatively flat. Makes the installation a little easier. Basically the question comes down to this: why pay $30 (or more) for the same thing?
Were the power wires provided with the radio or did you make your own? Also, did you seal the firewall grommet around the wires or just leave as is? Thank you.
Great video and nice install. Did you have the Icom 5100 before this one? I have the 5100 and was considering getting the FTM-500, so would be interested to see a comparison video
Thanks! Yes, I had the 5100 installed in my previous 4Runner; it's now a shack radio. I may try to do a comparison video, but I'd say it comes down to what repeaters are more prevalent in your area (DSTAR or C4FM) and your particular use case.
I've used it for fusion a few times, mostly just to make sure it works. No off road content yet, I'm planning on doing some this summer, so stay tuned!
Thanks! I've also been trying to figure out what I can do with this radio and a Mobilinkd. I'll probably hook the Digirig up to it as well at some point.
Thanks! LOL, I actually considered hanging the mic truck driver style, but there's no good place for me to put the mic hanger clip that wouldn't also have the cord all in my face.

I'll give that a try! Thanks for the tip. I'm going to be doing an update video soon.
Looks like I'm subscriber number 342. Thanks for the video. Love the 4runner.
Good you enjoyed the video and thanks much for subscribing!
Congratulations on your new radio! 73!
Thanks! It's a pretty good one so far.

Glad you found it useful! Hope your install turns out how you want!
Nice ride and a sano installation. Well done!
Thanks! 👍
My first Toyota was 1986 pickup. Currently have a 3rd and 5th gen 4runner
My dad had Toyota pickups for years, that's what I learned to drive on. This is my second 4Runner.

Did you ever get a follow up video on the radio head installation?
I have not yet, but it's on the list of videos to do.

I used pre-made cables from Powerwerx (I was being lazy). On the grommet I used high heat RTV silicone sealant.

Close all doors and hatches before scanning swr
I'll rerun it for the camera when I do the follow-up video.
Do you use it for fusion? Also any of your off road videos up yet? Great video… 73
I've used it for fusion a few times, mostly just to make sure it works. No off road content yet, I'm planning on doing some this summer, so stay tuned!
good video. Was there any issues TX at full power running on vehicle battery?
I haven't tested that much, but in the limited amount of usage so far I've had no issues.
I'am love ftm200❤
I can’t find anywhere, can you transmit and receive on GMRS frequencies? 462-467Mhz?
Not out of the box. You'd have to modify the radio, but due to the questionable legality of that it's not something that I endorse.
Nice install 🙂

@@HikinnHammin I haven't tried the mobilinkd yet but I have connected the Digirig and ran VARA FM from Linux Mint. Works well.
Gotta be pure, that's for sure!
I try!
Nice job with the install 👍
Glad you like it!
🎉 Just add a small metal plate that over hangs of the back of the dash mount and that should help bring the radio face back more…😃
Stay tuned for the update video!
You mean to tell me the flagship mobile radio doesn’t have memory banks but my ft-60 has them?!
For some inexplicable reason, yes.
Australia 🇦🇺 is watching 🇦🇺 👀
Awesome! I need to visit Australia again, it's been too long.
Perth is a good spot...
I was able to visit Darwin years ago, loved it. Next time, I'd like to see Perth and Sydney.
La France 🇨🇵 regarde aussi 😊
73's
"Yaesu menus... got it!". Lol, indeed.
Hang that mic from the ceiling, like a man! 73 nice install.
Thanks! LOL, I actually considered hanging the mic truck driver style, but there's no good place for me to put the mic hanger clip that wouldn't also have the cord all in my face.
Мечтаю такую станцию купить 😊
Brother just tie wrap the chord under the dash mount so that it’s out of the way of your infotainment
Came here from your Twitter post! 73s de VU2JO.
Thanks! Hope you enjoyed the video!
