Why cant parents look after and care for you when you're no longer a kid? I read somewhere that a mother in her 90s and her daughter in her 70s both lived together in an old care home and the mother was still giving her daughter sweets. Some parents will always be parents. Heck some hens will still drop food to their fully grown children. Its cute and adorable

There once was a woman who had 100 children. She named each of them after numbers in the order they were born. There was a fire and all of them died except Ninety. Ninety went off to have kids of her own. They were very kind and loving. One day they found an injured dog. They took it home and nursed it back to health. They hid the dog and never told their mother afraid she would kick the dog out. In fact, they never told anyone. To keep from arousing any suspicions they named the dog "This" so the name could be used in conversation. One day This ran away. They never saw This again. No one else knew about This. No one even knew a dog named This existed.
    Only Ninety's kids remember This.

Not to mention you largely can't survive as a restaurant by only having a minority for guests.
Sure, in a large city you can have that authentic eatery where you cater to a Chinese audience. But in rural areas you just don't have enough Chinese people to do that.
And even if you're de facto a community institution, you still have to serve every customer and why not?
Not having enough room to seat everyone is a rare luxury problem.
There is a kind of trend towards more interest in exotic and novel food, particularly a larger variety of ethnicities and their dishes.
Gatekeeping people from experiencing food, among the most accessible and shareable cultural expressions, is stupid and segregationist.

For the writing one, the key thing:
You cannot be limited to just your race and sexuality. I write the story of a guy with a Russian mother and an Inuit Father.
My IRL parents are American. What I can do though is TALK to people who do have those experiences, to learn of the cultures, see how they may interact, etc.
You don’t have to write yourself to be a legitimate writer, and it really pisses me off when people say otherwise.
My protagonist and I would disagree on a lot of things. In my Aspergers I talk to women to see if another character who is also a woman, has a similar socialization (expressed via thoughts, behaviours etc)
If you want to make a character that is not you, great! It is suggested to learn so that you properly represent people. This way you don’t make stupid mistakes, like merging the Inca and the Aztecs because that is all you think old Mesoamerican cultures were like, and not as diverse and fascinating as they actually are.
TL;DR write what you know, is beautiful because you can LEARN. You do NOT need to write what you ARE.

Wouldn't it be really boring if everyone just wrote about people like them? There'd be no diversity in the cast of characters. I like when people write about their experiences, but it's so important to also learn about others. We wouldn't have people who study history and write reports on it if that was gatekept, but they look into the region, the artifacts, the folklore and passed down history, to write about what that culture or that experience is.

I want to be inclusive in my writing, especially with neurodivergent characters since I'm autistic myself and I know good neurodivergent characters are few and far between, but often when I ask, I'm shut down, told "just don't write about us you'll only fuck it up and if you even try we'll do everything we can to shut you down" and like. I get it, but how are you ever going to get more accurate representation, more people to understand you, and less people who think there's something *wrong* with you, when you lambast people for asking and wanting to get it right?

fun story about people getting offended by pants
one of my friends told me this story about her mom. so I'm guesstimating it happened in 1970-80
she (my friend's mom) came from a very rural area, very traditionalist. But she went to study in a big city in the north for university and picked up some more relaxed habits. especially about dressing. she started wearing pants because everyone else was doing it and she found them comfortable. not a problem untill she went back to her parent's house for summer vacation.
she didn't want to get back into a gown because comfort so she just went with pants.
her parents didn't really love it as much as she did but they knew better than judge her from her clothes' choice. her father told her that if anyone ever disrespected her she should tell him and that ended the conversation.
well, as it happened there was no need for it because no one told her anything (apart from the disapproving looks)
they just went directly to her father with their complaints (they were sure he could make her stop or something)
the conversation went something like this:
"Why are you letting your daughter dress like that? it's immodest and immoral. She should be wearing a gown!"
"why? so that it's easier for you to lift it?"
and no one ever said anything again.

Tell me about it. I just dropped a $200 donation-tip on top of an $80 expense, but it was an exceptional case. This person really helped out, it's a non-profit organization on a shoestring budget, and I really needed the assistance that I couldn't get on my own without spending a whole hell of a lot more than $280. They were pathetically grateful, it was really a good deal all around.

First it was: "you're in college and I have to work, you live in luxury"
Then it became: "You work in shifts and get to go home, I work with sick people 24/7"
And now I'm almost never home because of work: "You're a manager, you don't do real work. Can't you just take a day off and come home?!"

I noticed most of the restaurants being safe spaces for other Chinese people a lot. It's honestly really cool to see so many people of an entirely different ethnicity all in one place just, chatting and eating food. Not being harassed by others like you would see in schools or on the streets, just living their own lives and enjoying it.
My family is hispanic mostly, so sometimes when we eat at a Chinese restaurants we kind of just go "hah that's funny. we the only non-asians here" and sit down and eat. We didn't bother anyone, we didn't try to, we were just there for the food. And hey, we're supporting a local business and not McDonald's for once. I joke about the chopsticks being annoying to use but it's because I lack the proper skill and practice to use them. I'm bad at sculpting too you expect me to throw shade at Alice Adams?
Chinese food tastes amazing and I don't understand why someone would get so worked up about eating food people like. If I told everyone to stop consuming tamales because it's cultural appropriation my family would disown me on the spot. The idea that you cannot eat certain dishes because they were created by people who you weren't descended from is stupid and ironically enough is pretty racist on it's own.
I'm not speaking on behalf of chinese people, I'm speaking from experience as a POC myself and applying that logic to this situation. Eat whatever you want, I don't care.

If you get crappy service, a small tip or no tip is understandable. The thing many people don't understand is that even if you don't tip the server, that server still has to tip out the kitchen on that bill out of their own money. That's one of the reasons I always made sure I put the best on the plate that I could. I didn't want to be the reason the server didn't get tipped and then have to tip us in the kitchen. The kitchen always gets tipped out, the servers don't always get a tip.
