Super Ténéré 1200 reset button fix

  • In this video I will fix the known reset button issue where when you press it nothing happens. This is an annoying problem as you wont be able to change the time, set different trip counters, change miles/km and more. I originally thought that this is caused by corrosion but I then realised that this type of defect is quite common and it is a bit strange that corrosion affects always the same portion of the circuit.

How amazing ... I came to this from your Oslo trip videos this morning and we shared some comments ... after viewing this I went to my bike (same clocks) to forward my clocks 1 hour to spring time and guess what? yes ... mine does not work either!!!! So I know what is wrong thank you ... however I have fingers like banana's and no dextrerity at all so I will be looking to an auto electrican but at least I can show him your video and maybe save him a lot of time ... brilliant and thanks for sharing.

Glad it might help you. I had some other people commenting about taking it to an electrician and having it sorted. Hope it will be the same for you.

Amazing fix, for a very annoying problem that happens more frequently that you know. Saved me a lot of moneymate, thank you.

I did admire how easily you first located the source of the problem but, mostly, how effectively you managed to fix it, undoubtedly owing to your technical background knowledge and skills. And how lucky I am that I can use it as a reference base by retrieving it any time I need to. Thank you very much for it.

I don't have this problem on my Gen 1 S10 yet, but if it happens I will now be prepared. Without your video I might have been tempted to spend hundreds of pounds on a new dash - Thanks for posting another great "how to" video

As already mentioned your videos are great. Very concise and you don't leave any of the steps out which is very important. Regarding this video I have a gen 1 bike but haven't had the button issue yet but I have the fix thanks to you! As for future videos I would like to see one that shows how to repack the steering and swing arm bearings.

Thank you so much for the videos you are producing. Your video on full service on your Gen 1 Super10 is the best out there. You do a great job with the camera and explaining what you're doing and why. Most videos leave a step or two out, or you can't see what's happening...yours are perfect. I changed the plugs on my bike last weekend because your video gave me confidence to do it myself. Thank you! Next is the brake pads. I don't have this electrical problem...yet. Now that you've had some more time to think about this problem, is there anything you can think of we Gen 1 owners can do to prevent it? Put something on the board in the bad spot? Do some scraping while it's working? It doesn't sound like there will be anything that can be done, but wanted to ask now that some time has passed and maybe you've thought of something.

Thank you so much for this amazing feedback!!
In regards to the problem I don't think there is much you can do. As I later say in the video I actually think it has nothing to do with water entrance. It might be a design flaw or an assembly issue. After you design a circuit, normally you outsource the manufacturing to a third party. The outsourcing process involves many documents with a lot of steps. If one of the steps is not executed correctly nobody might notice it and everything might work fine for years or forever. For instance one of the documents is the Bill Of Materials. This is a list of all the components that will be placed on the board. If by mistake the company gets one value wrong (say 10kohm instead of 100kohm) then some parts of the board might be affected over time. The only real fix is to identify the mistake. I'm not excluding water entrance but it is just very odd that it is the same for all the bikes that have this problem.

@@Freedomachine Turns out there is a recall notice for nearly 4,000 ST's because the sub harness can be fried causing a headlight failure
      www.vehicle-recall.co.uk/recall/RM/2014/005
It could also be an ECU problem!

Given your skillset, maybe you could do a video on this hardwire fix for all the Generation 1 owners one day?

Thanks for this info. I went through the different posts and there is a lot going on here. I'm thinking of doing another video and I add this as info into it. To do a full video about it I prefer to have the actual problem which gives me more motivation to do it. Unfortunately technical issues on the ST are rare and I notice that the views I'm getting are not so many. I would like to focus a bit more on the bike as a Freedomachine but Covid is not helping much.

Thanks for watching ☺️ you can change from MPH to KPH but you need the reset button for that. I don't remember the exact sequence but I think it was a long press of the reset button while the ODO is selected.

Ah ; you work as a electrical engineer 😁. The Yamaha dealer would just put a new dashboard , don’t you think ?

    • @Freedomachine
      @Freedomachine  4 роки тому +1

I know that people have complained to Yamaha. In fact Yamaha has recognised this as a know issue. Unfortunately it is not frequent enough for them to take responsibility. Also it appears to affect only some bikes. The same circuit might have been manufactured in different places or it is a batch related issue. Unfortunately the dealer is right with the replacement of the entire dash. It is a dealers duty to give you a product that is in its original state. Having a wire hanging around your dash is not a professional fix and unfortunately it makes no sense to just replace the PCB as this makes up for the entire cost of the dash anyway.

Freedomachine But in general Yamaha is a very solid bike ? Nick Sanders has a Super Ténére but I think Yamaha makes the services and I’m wonder if he knows what’s changed and what’s not 😏.
