    I think we need a compilation of your untreated room clap tests.

    Never stop your music bits or having fun with your podcast. I came for your very informative review of the Neumann TLM49. I very much appreciated the thorough testing, comparisons and usage examples. I stayed because, unlike most “reviewers”, you didn’t forget that entertainment is also your business👍🏻

    Howdy Bandrew! Oddball BSP viewer here, could we get a compilation video showcasing the treated room/untreated room footage (and possibly even waveforms) for a variety of the microphones? You could have a (perhaps occasionally updated) side-by-side video. There are a variety of reasons the information/demonstration is useful in that format.

      HAHA! Oh man that is embarrassing. Now you know how ridiculous it is where I sometimes restart and have to edit. The first time I said it was fine, but in my head it sounded unclear and I had to try and get it right.

    During talking head pieces like a solo podcast it might be better to have no headphones. I've spent countless hours trying to take out some weird frequency I keep hearing just to find out it was hearing myself with a latency lol.
    Drove me nuts, dude.
    Gave me a chance to teach myself about frequencies though.

    I love your reviews just as they are. Indeed, I enjoy watching them even when I have zero interest in purchasing the featured mic. In such cases I often jump some of the tests because I’m listening on cheap headphones and can’t hear the differences anyway. When I’m watching for keeps I use studio headphones and replay your tests many times. Sorry this behavior affects your metrics.

    I’ve also noticed that when I “skip” a regular upload the following video tends to do worse. For 2 years I was posting every week 1 long form video and now I’ve cut back to 1 long form every 2 weeks and shorts in between. If I go 3 weeks without posting a long form, it does tend to do worse so I agree that there is a correlation.

    Sorry for the “19.99”…not trying to skimp on the other penny but if there’s a way to turn off the “use tacky clearance-bin pricing conventions for super thanks” setting, I haven’t found it. Maybe it’s an iOS thing? In any case, thank you and happy 4th!

    I've always thought of a podcast as being a pre-recorded radio talkshow. The host sitting at a desk wearing headphones with a microphone in his/her face is what I would expect to see. But since video podcasting has become more popular in recent years, many podcasters have turned their studios into tv daytime talkshow sets but continue to wear headphones and hide their faces behind a microphone. It looks silly to me and it's driven me back to listening to the audio format of many podcasts. As for some non-podcast UA-cam video formats I can understand wearing headphones on camera looking funny to some people, but for audio equipment reviews and demonstrations wearing headphones seem perfectly normal and necessary.

    Is this something new? I've been looking for a way to correct some stuff on a few of my older videos!
    I'm the worst with consistency but I have noticed the opposite with a dependence on subject matter. It was like a month before I put up my micpre video and that wound up being my best performing video in the first week ever (until i released the WA44 video). If you ever want to see my data lemme know, I'll get you some extracts or screen shots or whatever.
    (that mic is bright!)
    I discorded a msg to you regarding the mic reach thing... ;)
    Insightful as always and I learned something! woohoo!

    8:25 I agree 100%. This is something I've been doing for years. I almost watched a video about Dr. Disrespect. After 30 seconds, I reminded myself that I don't care. I've literally never watched a single second of his content in any context. He's a acumbag, that's it. And I don't care what happens to him.

    I'm confused why there is not a dedicated corrections box. You should be able to clip out AND insert clips into a video without losing all your likes, so long as the content is higher quality of course.

    You know what’s awful? The fact they still can’t make Chapters work properly!
    You’ve set up everything correctly, yet they aren’t display at all, not in iPad or iPhone app, not on desktop.
    I’ve had the same crap on two of my channels.
    And yet these *redacted* are screwing me over by changing Desktop layout to some trash with comments on the right side! Again! (They tried this crap like 2 years ago).
    I absolutely despise YT management, completely *redacted* not smart people who HATE UA-cam and all the creators, besides like top100.

    Regarding distance tests, shouldn't every microphone obey the inverse square law?

    • @bsp
      @bsp  2 місяці тому

      Maybe I’ll have to try it out in the next episode. Maybe everything I know has been a lie.

    • @bsp
      @bsp  2 місяці тому

      To be clear, yes the inverse square law holds true, but mics have different sensitivities at different frequencies and they have different polar patterns. So once you level them when you’re 3 inches off, as you get further away from the microphone my thought is those different frequency responses and polar patterns are goign to lead to some frequencies maintaining a higher level than others. If those frequencies are related to the dominant frequencies in spoken word will be dependent on mic to mic. But I am happy to be completely wrong here.

    • @45KevinR
      @45KevinR 2 місяці тому

      There must surely be more in play, as otherwise the polar pattern of a mic would depend only on sensitivity and how much of a "hood" it has blocking off certain directions. Yet we have differing cardioid patterns and even supercardioid. And those clever mics that have multiple patterns. And shotgun mics which seem to have a cardioid pattern but launch it from further away. Weird, eh.
      I'm only guessing but as a diaphragm is not a single point, and neither are the surrounding parts of the microphone, presumably sound coming from certain points in space is either too weak or cancels itself out making the signal weak. While sound from other points is visible, focused, perhaps even boosted. Kind of like interference patterns in water or light...? But I am literally guessing.

    Not to produce a video unless having a catchy title and thumbnail seems to be ridiculous to me at a first glance. At least for information based videos. First you have to consider your audience and or the potential audience you want to reach. If there is none for your topic even the best thumbnail and most catchy titl in the entire world will not push your views and subscriptions in the long run. I do understand on the other hand when people who do their videos for a living or just for making lots of money may choose to do it the other way around. It still feels like the world being upside down to me, though.

  • @45KevinR
    @45KevinR 2 місяці тому

    I'm going to suggest that the "title first" people are doing "zany life or stunt" videos. Or just rarely making videos about knowledge they already have. Your kind of Podcastage video would require you to have reached (or invented) a conclusion before you spend time on testing or filming. And it's also a sign that they're making content as a living, or trying to.
    The title first method would suit those who post using the most clickbait, extreme, triggering titles. Eg. "This mic renders the SB7B obsolete". Etc etc. And they doubtless did pick that (or the manufacturer bought it) before they did the "review". Something more nuanced or rational is not as effective clickbait.
    I've been looking at a bunch of camera channels lately and they are also rife with this. The title is almost always far more dramatic than the real content. There's also a guy who makes quite good content, but leaves out the product names even in the description, in an attempt to generate more click through hits on his links to amazon, etc. This gets very wearing for me, but I'm assuming works for him. Maybe the younger audience is more accepting of this practice.
    On your tests: I think a lot of them benefit beginners who don't know about mic technique, and those who can only afford one mic and need to use it for multiple tasks. They also provide contrasts between mics that would be lost in the subtleties of normal sensible use. I think off axis is also relevant to people who may be mic'ing up multiple people or instruments. Sound will leak from one target to the other's microphone and it's useful to see which mics and directions will hear it. Or worse hear it distorted.
    Also: new jacket and hat!
