  • Thelonious Monk played jazz piano. "Straight no chaser" and "round midnight" are some of his best known albums. What made Thelonious Monk so stubborn when it came to playing the style of jazz he wanted to play and why did some of his peers think he was a little crazy and weird, only to find out that he was a jazz genius.

Monk is a true embodiment of the spirit of freedom that is intrinsic in the JAZZ idiom. He is phenomenally outstanding.

I never understood Monk until, one day, I did. And then I saw the genius. To me, nobody comes close.

🎼I performed an all Monk music concert with my quartet on October 10th, 2017, the Centenary of his birth. I memorized all the music, because I wanted to perform with a creative free spirit and unbounded energy to which the late great jazz pianist composer Thelonious Sphere Monk always did. Thank you Monk. 🎹🎶

Wow, an exceptional portrayal! I played jazz for many decades, studied and taught at Berklee, but was never able to attempt most of Monk's tunes. They are, as you said, incredibly difficult to interpret. I have his son's debut recording, which is excellent. T.S. Monk has done a great job of honoring his father's legacy and using it as a platform for his own career.

Man I hate it when a genius has to sideline himself while he waits for the rest of the world to catch up , but it worked exactly as it was gonna work .

You don't get his brilliance until you get it! Other then Mingus he was the best jazz composer of all time in my humble opinion. Thanks for your channel it brings much joy to me!

The first secular music concert of any kind I attended was the Longhorn Jazz Festival sometime in the mid-sixties. When one of the group of high school friends my older brother had conned into going with him crapped out and he was stuck with an extra ticket he offered it to me. I was still in junior high, and I was not a big jazz fan, but I knew Thelonius Monk was controversial and famous and couldn't wait to see him. He was the headliner, closing the show, before it was his turn my brother's whiny buddies got bored and made us go home. I never got another chance.

On the surface, Monk’s angular sound shouldn’t work, but somehow it does.

If one started listening to Monk before even setting foot in school as I did being open to the wide open makes magic unnecessary in the grandeur of reality.

      What school?
You mean, before first grade, you had parents playing Monk?
Or, are you saying that you chose your own your own, at such an age?
Or, were you actually older, and by _school_ , actually mean music school?

Even as a drummer I can say his music is hard to play with. I’ve been trying to record covers of Monk’s works, and they are always the hardest tracks for me to follow because they’re just so…. Different…. 😂

As a youth in 1969 I turned my back on Rock music embracing Delta Blues. During that time searching for authentic music I procured a Monk record and listened to it with all seriousness. I could not for the life of me make sense of it, but I knew there was a kind of genius in it. Your doc says I was right.

Genius is a word to describe him. As so is the musician, in my opinion, Sun Ra. Let's check it out. Great piece. Epistrophy, interpreted by Los Angeles native, Eric Dolphy.

I’ve went down the Sun Ra rabbit hole, and it goes from big band stuff I love, to the more fusion type stuff, that mostly stinks, imo.
Though, I have that type of relationship with all jazz music.
Love some of it, but then other beloved stuff, just doesn’t hold my attention.
