🎼I performed an all Monk music concert with my quartet on October 10th, 2017, the Centenary of his birth. I memorized all the music, because I wanted to perform with a creative free spirit and unbounded energy to which the late great jazz pianist composer Thelonious Sphere Monk always did. Thank you Monk. 🎹🎶
Art Tatum. Bud Powell. Monk. His work with Coltrane and Charlie Rouse exceptional and defining of the bebop genre. Great expose. Hats of to Nellie and the Baroness...
He was a musician’s dream with all that space he gave them to solo. That is why Coltrane blended so well with him. He was my favorite in an era with so many brilliant keyboardists.
Wow, an exceptional portrayal! I played jazz for many decades, studied and taught at Berklee, but was never able to attempt most of Monk's tunes. They are, as you said, incredibly difficult to interpret. I have his son's debut recording, which is excellent. T.S. Monk has done a great job of honoring his father's legacy and using it as a platform for his own career.
You don't get his brilliance until you get it! Other then Mingus he was the best jazz composer of all time in my humble opinion. Thanks for your channel it brings much joy to me!
Man I hate it when a genius has to sideline himself while he waits for the rest of the world to catch up , but it worked exactly as it was gonna work .
As a youth in 1969 I turned my back on Rock music embracing Delta Blues. During that time searching for authentic music I procured a Monk record and listened to it with all seriousness. I could not for the life of me make sense of it, but I knew there was a kind of genius in it. Your doc says I was right.
The first secular music concert of any kind I attended was the Longhorn Jazz Festival sometime in the mid-sixties. When one of the group of high school friends my older brother had conned into going with him crapped out and he was stuck with an extra ticket he offered it to me. I was still in junior high, and I was not a big jazz fan, but I knew Thelonius Monk was controversial and famous and couldn't wait to see him. He was the headliner, closing the show, before it was his turn my brother's whiny buddies got bored and made us go home. I never got another chance.
If one started listening to Monk before even setting foot in school as I did being open to the wide open makes magic unnecessary in the grandeur of reality.
What school? You mean, before first grade, you had parents playing Monk? Or, are you saying that you chose your own your own, at such an age? Or, were you actually older, and by _school_ , actually mean music school?
Even as a drummer I can say his music is hard to play with. I’ve been trying to record covers of Monk’s works, and they are always the hardest tracks for me to follow because they’re just so…. Different…. 😂
Genius is a word to describe him. As so is the musician, in my opinion, Sun Ra. Let's check it out. Great piece. Epistrophy, interpreted by Los Angeles native, Eric Dolphy.
I’ve went down the Sun Ra rabbit hole, and it goes from big band stuff I love, to the more fusion type stuff, that mostly stinks, imo. Though, I have that type of relationship with all jazz music. Love some of it, but then other beloved stuff, just doesn’t hold my attention.

Hell yeah I’m studying and learning all of monks pieces. On the off chance you haven’t already, listen to monks casino
Monk is a true embodiment of the spirit of freedom that is intrinsic in the JAZZ idiom. He is phenomenally outstanding.
"underground "1968 , the best álbum of Monk !

maybe you might like to read and listen to my recent article on Monk and his albums on the Tracking Angle site.
I never understood Monk until, one day, I did. And then I saw the genius. To me, nobody comes close.
Maybe Beethoven or Liszt. Monk is his own jazz

You are not wrong! Both giants of the art form
Stubbornness or dedication. He was a Genius and ahead of His Time.

This is a good short. The photo shown of Monk's wife is Mary Lou Williams not Nellie.Overall a good presentation of this jazz genius.

Excellent short doc my brother.
Glad you enjoyed it
He once chased a heckler out of the theatre. Not what the guy expected when he bought his ticket. Robin Witting England
Just had posted on the Tracking Angle site a critical review of Monk's records. He is my favorite jazz musician.
great! this is awesome that there are people who want others to know as much as them)
THELONIOUS ❤
Thank You Very Much!
Thelonious, en mi alma.
Siempre! 🙏🏼
"Why was this man so stubborn?" ❤
This is so educational and wonderful to learn!
Excellent video channel about jazz.
Careful diction, excellent narrative!
"All musicians are subconsciously mathematicians." 2:24
Quote attributed to Thelonious Monk
It keeps you hooked by the original narrative it presents.
He even played with unusual technique, using flat, spread fingers instead of curving them. 6:19 [WTTW]
these are quickly becoming my favorite videos on youtube! keep them coming!
Thanks! Will do!
please

I don't have the knowledge to explain Monk but I do believe his concept of music is what happens on the other side of the rainbow were the gold is
I appreciate your wonderful words ❤️
On the surface, Monk’s angular sound shouldn’t work, but somehow it does.
Thank you, you always get a 👍from me and I appreciate your work
I appreciate that

The two most challenging genres for me to play as a drummer are jazz and heavy metal, in the best way

Musical genius cooperating with his deficits to create art
It's because even though he was surrounded by family and friends, he called himself Theloneliest Monk.
