  • The Fujifilm XF 35mm F1.4 lens on the high-resolution sensors of the Fujifilm XT5 and XH2, is it useable? Fujifilm has a list on which lenses can resolve the 40 megapixel sensor, and guess what? The XF Fujifilm 35mm F1.4 is not on this list? Since it's not on the list does it mean that we can not use it at all? In this video, I revisit this beloved lens to see how it performs on the 40-megapixel sensor. Join me as I share my thoughts and experiences after several weeks of testing. From stunning image quality to remarkable performance, find out why this lens continues to impress photographers. Unfortunately, my time with it is coming to an end as it returns to its owner. Y’all think this lens is still useable on the 40mp sensor?

    • @9Mtikcus

It's absolutely fine to use on the X-T5, it is part of a very specific work flow we have (Instant portraiture, where photos are printed to 8" x 6" approx. 20cm by 150 cm) so it's flaws are not noticeable anyway, but the render is still beautiful. It is almost always stopped down to at least F/2.8 in these situations and we have complete control of the lighting.
I'd happily use this lens wide open if I have control of the lighting and where the subject is in the centre of the frame, and in situations where every photo is not needed then I can pick and choose.
Would I sell it? not as long as I shoot Fuji X
Would I buy it again.... No if it was damaged, stolen, or lost and I needed a 35mm ish lens, I'd buy the 33mm F/1.4.
In Printed photographs, I really don't see a benefit of the 40MP over the 26MP sensor when viewed at a normal viewing distance (not printed to A1 and viewed from 5 cm away) unless the image needs to be heavily cropped which is not common (at least for me) outside of wildlife photography (and then you wouldn't be using the 35mm), hence I still shoot mostly on an X-T3 and leave the X-T5 with our other photographer.
there are no lenses I regret selling, there are lenses I regret buying (or wish I had not)
      60mm F/2.4
      16-80mm F/4 are the 2 biggest regrets
The 60mm for a moderately expensive lens, performs poorly wide open or stopped down to F/2.8, really needs to be at F/4 or F/5.6, biggest regret is the poor resale value, so I just keep it and don't use it.
The 16-80 I sold I didn't lose money on that lens as got it in a kit, but found it to be very soft outside of the centre, and really needed to be stopped down to F/8....

This lens is my bae, but Fuji has forgotten that size, weight and optical imperfection are important to a lot of people. Aggravates me that they refuse to update the 18 f/2 and 35 f/1.4 with at least some new focus motors. They also continue to sell them at absurd prices given their age and dated under the hood tech. My dream is a slightly larger 35 1.4 that focuses internally, has powerful motors, is weathersealed and keeps the same optical formula. It would be glued to my camera for photo and video.

Nice video - Tongue. I love the 35mm as it was my first lens for the X-T1 - 10 years now and it is still one of my favorite lenses. Yes, it does have a vintage character and it is slow to focus. It is super lightweight on the x-S20.

Great video, I really like the output of this lens but it really shows its age with resolving power and outdated AF unfortunately…
I agree also with you in your complaint about the weight of the new 23/33…they just made my wrist fatigue as everyday walkaround lenses or when used whole day for travel…for professional work there is no problem to take photos for few hours and they are fine, but for travel I am still relaying on my Fujicrons and Pancakes that are fast enought in low light with realiable with AF…

I bought it used and i am shocked that people that say it's "not sharp enough" exist.
I went for a walk with my friends and we did a shoot out with it, jpegs, 1.4 to 2.0 aperture.. in what universe it's "not sharp"? I can compare it to the lenses i had previously on fuji - tamron 17-70 zoom and 23 f2 prime. Maybe those 2 are technically sharper, but images from 35 1.4 look aesthetically more pleasing even at equal aperture values. The only complain i have is the aperture ring is just a bit loose, it's not moving on it's on but it will move if you accidently bump it with a finger.
This is by the way is going to be my only lens on the X-T30 camera, because i am not gonna invest in this system any further. It's gonna be my nice second camera that i can have some fun with.

Awesome lens, I haven't shoot much with the X-T5 because the weather is nasty but I know the limitations.
Priority for my travel kit is size and weight.
My lenses are 16mm f2.8, 35mm f1.4 and I just bought the 50mm f2. 2 of 3 on the Fujifilm list. To me, good enough!

It should be noted that this lens [one of the first XF lenses ever created] is from 2012. It was designed for the 16MP X-Trans sensors that was future proofed to cover the 24 and 26MP X-Trans. everything negative mentioned for the 40MP sensor is not an issue with the older bodies it was designed for. On FB this week I posted a beachscape shot this week with this lens and my X-Pro2 and going in 100% it is sharp as ever with clear details and no ghosting or aborations. So putting it on a 40MP fuji is takin a risk if you are a pixel peeper. When someone new to photography asks me if they should get the new 40MP Fujis and lenses I steer them toward the older cameras for two reasons; a) no one needs 40MPs unless you're a pro and print or crop a lot, 24, heck even 16MPs is PLENTY for 99% of uses... and b) costs! these lenses and bodies can be had for dirt cheap deals now and you get the same image as you get with new models but better because fuji early on made their lenses and sensors to have a filmic quality with unique image rendering that the new cameras can't copy imho.

Awesome content as usual. It's pretty sad that this lens cannot function at 100% when used with a 40mp sensor. Lenses are getting bigger and bigger, which partially defeats the purpose of buying into a compact APS-C system.

Couple months back I sold my X-E3 + XF 35 f1.4 combo as I jumped to Canon R8 + RF 35 f1.8 and now I start to regret selling my Fuji setup. Canon is not a lot bigger but it counts especially during travel and especially when you have two kids. XF 35 f1.4 has a really nice rendering : softer light transitions, color rendering, bokeh, softness with halation wide open, field curvature. It definitely has character and look that is hard to replicate with post processing. My current setup now feels too clinical and I often add softness and diffusion in post process. Fuji setup with DxO software is sharp enough even if you pixel peep, with Lightroom maybe not but in the end pixel peeping doesn't make sense.

Make this a selling point for the x pro bodies to get even more rangefinder like experience. I like my Voigtländer Nokton 35mm, but even at 400€ for a used Copy it is expensive for what it does

  • @matt88169
    @matt88169 4 місяці тому +1

Your video is the proof - the banger shots you took with the 35mm are what make it special - its not so much the lens! The price / AF performance of the 35mm is why I personally wouldn't bother - I am also not a fan of lots of chromatic aberration. I'd choose the 35/50mm f/2s, 16mm f/2.8 or maybe the 27mm f/2.8 pancake if I wanted the smallest possible "fast" primes for travel. That said, I have no problem with the the 23mm LM WR, 56mm WR, or 16-55mm as "travel" lenses (16-55 being about the biggest I'd roll with no battery grip). Sure I feel silly in the moment lugging a "big" camera around with "big" lenses. But traveling is special, I don't do it often. Why should I take photos with my WORST, rather than BEST stuff? BTW the 18-55 would be hands down my "one and done" lens if its AF performance were a little more reliable. Oh well.

now were talking, ,Awesome post, High five my friend, Thanks for taking the time to post .For my situation (just documenting my family) I want to upgrade from the xt2 to xt5 but to buy all the new lenses that resolve the 40 mp sensor is alot to swallow, aswell as the size of the lens is a concern. Happy to hear the 35 is good enough for travel and own personal photography, I have a question. if you want a wider option to pair with your 35 1.4 ,would you use the 23 f2? or the original 23 1.4..I own the original 23 1.4 just a tad big. but I feel its a better option to the f2 version in my opinion. for indoors etc. Like to hear your thoughts.my dream is that fuji makes a 23 pancake lens or updates the f2 version. 35 is still my fav. shocked it doesn't sky rocket in price like the 100v.ahahaha ..at the 8:28 mark in your video was this shot wide open?Ii absolutely love this photo.colour etc...this is the reason I stick with fuji

@@richbrook101 not true. There’s a time and place for everything depends on what I’m shooting and its intention. Whenever I want to add more “character” or a filmic look I can always attach a diffusion filter to the modern lens to lessen its clinical look (in which I do often). With the old 35mm, I find my self fighting against its short comings more often then I want.

    • @MrRafalEn

@@Iamtongue did You ever think more about this list? Why on earth there is listed XF 16/2.8 and not XF 16/1.4 which is superior in any way. Why there is mediocre (to say at least) XF 16-80/4 with it's poor corner sharpness? List goes on. Not to mention that 40 Mpix X-Trans V sensor gives almost zero benefits compared to 26Mpox X-Trans IV, when it comes to gain in fine details. Images on new sensor looks like upscaled to 40 Mpix (like You could do in PS). Don't believe me? Then try to do simple test: take a shot from best XF lens You got on 40mpix sensor, then downscale this file in LR to 26Mpix, upscale it again in LR to 40mpix, and then zoom in and compare all this fine details and pixels from original file to processed one. You will notice almost none differences. Profesional lab tests confirms that.
It's not sensor fault, it's because lenses are not able to produce efficient resolution to "feed" such demanding sensor like 40Mpix apsc (which is like 90Mpix FF, when it comes to pixel density).
So Fujifilm list describes lenses, who can "resolve" sharpness on upscaled 26Mpix images? LOL 😂
