10:50-the good 'ole days of exciting Dolphins football in the Orange Bowl. The "ticker-tape" effect was alive and well both there and at Mile High Stadium in Denver during the 1980s.
1984 was the season in which Walter Payton would break Jim Brown's rushing record. Franco Harris was ahead of Payton coming into the season. Brown challenged Harris to a match race and if Jim Brown won it he would try to win a roster spot with the Raiders. Brown was 47 at the time. BTW Harris wearing Seattle colors is SO SO WRONG!
At the time, Jim Brown was critical of Franco Harris because at this point, Harris was regularly running towards the sidelines to avoid contact. Brown, however, craved delivering punishment to would-be tacklers throughout his great career. This likely led to his challenge to Franco, the suddenly Seattle Seahawk.
So, I didn’t realize that the LA Rams were playing at Anaheim Stadium now. Al Davis not only moved his team to LA, he kicked the Rams out of their home and settled in at the Coliseum. Then the Raiders and Rams both played on the same day, at the same time. The Raiders were now bringing in the stars, like Sammy Davis Jr. The Raiders usurped the Rams drawing power in that huge market. No wonder Pete Rozelle was ticked off.
What happened was Carrol Rosebloom who was the owner of the Los Angeles Rams wanted a new stadium to play rather than the old Memorial Coliseum. In a book about the NFL. He sent out questionnaires about the Coliseum. 1. It was in a blighted area, 2. Inadequate concessions and amenities IE food, souvenir vendors, luxury boxes and or premium, private suites, restrooms Inadequate and not clean. In 1980, the team moved down I-5 to Anaheim which is the home to Disneyland and the city gave them a 15 year ride until they moved to St. Louis Missouri. The San Francisco 49ers used the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to hold practices for the upcoming game against the Dallas Cowboys which was the NFC title game.

He was always a salesman/PR guy with very limited knowledge of the X's and O's of how the game is played, his hatred for Al Davis came down to professional jealousy, Al Davis was a very successful Head Coach, Rozelle never coached ANY sport at ANY level, Al Davis was also a very successful GM, Rozelle was a failure and Al Davis was the AFL commissioner during turbulent times between the rival leagues that culminated with the merger announcement being made in 1966, Rozelle got together with most of the AFL owners and they decided Sneaky Pete would remain NFL commissioner of the expanded 26-team NFL starting in 1970. Al Davis being the smarter man and a better businessman stepped away from the AFL commissionership to return to the Oakland Raiders in 1966 to continue as the Raiders Head Coach and GM and later that year he made an eighteen thousand dollar investment to buy a10% stake in the Raiders franchise and within a decade he gobbled up the remaining 90%, Rozelle NEVER owned a professional sports team!
