This is like a fucking movie, in that it's so moving from scene to scene, everything tells a story that you relate to without even understanding the language. My favourite black metal song, period, always, forever.

When I heard this on La Sanie, I didn't think it could get better. This is better somehow.
There's a 3rd version on Lorraine Rehearsal that is also the longest version if you haven't heard that one. Personally I can't decide whether I like this or the Lorraine version better.

The early works of *Peste Noire* bring something atmospheric and nostalgic, although they reproduce a very dirty sound. I think _Panégyrique De La Dégénérescence_ was the last relevant thing the band released: raw, medieval, pestilent and cold as La Chaise-Dieu. Better than anything rude I heard on the albums of the Norse barbarians.
"Ballade contre les ennemis de la France" also sound raw and medieval but more folkish

No doubt. And references to classic authors in French literature were abundant -- although I still like the band, almost everything they produce now is under-politicized hooligan bullshit.

Does anyone know what kind of distortion pedal is being used for the lead guitar? It has a near orchestral sound. Does anyone know what it could be/in the ballpark ofIt

I think it's just layers and layers of guitars coupled with OD pedal in front. Pretty sure they use a room mic as well as one front pf amp. I doubt they had much budget for fancy pedals.
(There's also an actual synth in some passage that might help glue everything together.)
famine uses vox amps with a ibanez tube screamer style overdrive pedal and records in large open spaces with alot of natural reverb

Entiendo que los gritos tal vez no sean tú preferencia, pero esto es un demo de una banda que en aquél momento era una banda de Black Metal, Si bien en el black se pueden usar diversos estilo vocales, uno de los más prominentes son los shrieking vocals (gritos agudos para los de campo y no ponerme a explicar de más), y aparte de ello el punto del Black nunca ha sido tanto la letra ni mucho menos el estilo vocal con el que se transmita, sino la atmósfera y el sentimiento que transmite la pieza en sí, en especial un sentimiento de desagrado, repugnancia y molestia, es por ello por lo que se usan tanto los gritos y la distorsión, traen a la mente esas sensaciones desagradables que sumergen al escucha en esos sentimientos negativos que se busca transmitir. No digo que debas apreciarlo tanto cómo otros, pero respeta los gustos, puede que no te parezca lo mejor y lo entiendo, al black no se puede entrar tan fácil, hay que acostumbrarse poco a poco y no todos están dispuestos a hacerlo y ello está bien.
