- Jung Rhythm (じゃんぐリズム) is a 1998 rhythm game developed by Altron for the Sega Saturn. Despite how it’s rendered in English, the title seems to be pronounced Jangurizumu or “Jungle Rhythm” in Japanese. This is further corroborated by several written references to the word “jungle” that appear within the cutscenes and stages. Still, considering how dreams feature prominently in the opening and (bad) ending cutscenes, the title could also be a nod to psychiatrist Carl Jung. So how do you pronounce “Jung” in English then…? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The game itself was quite obviously an attempt by Altron to cash in on the popularity of PaRappa the Rapper. As is often the case with most clones, Jung Rhythm comes off as pale imitation. While the visuals are reasonably good and some of the songs sort of catchy, the game just doesn’t play particularly well. I often find myself thinking that I nailed a line only to end up being jeered by the crowd. And sometimes when I know I flubbed one for sure, I’m cheered. It’s frustrating, but there aren't any better options on the Saturn for this style of game. Fortunately, Jung Rhythm is still very affordable if you want to take a chance on it. Just don't get your hopes up.

for anyone who was as morbidly curious as me, here are the names of every character!
The main character is named Vanilla Essence ( バニラ - エシセンス)
The first teacher is named Mama Essence and is Vanilla's mother
Vanilla's friends are named Strawberry Milk, Rabbit Hair, and Patchin Pudding
The mean girl is named Bavaroa Dorian
The art teacher is, obviously, Picasso (literally Pi-ka-so)
The old man is named Enka Gonzou
The restaurant owner is named Coconut Pineapple (Literally just ココナッツ パイン, but the phonetic letters are typically read Pineapple as opposed to just Pine.)
And Vanilla's idol is, also obviously, Chorking

@@Eddies_Bra-att-ha-grejer I agree with you even without having played Jung Rhythm. I played it on PSP, but when I tried it on PS1 the game was very out of sync. Also Jung Rhythm if he shows you where you really put the buttons.That worked, it was added until Parappa the rapper 2

I think they did that just to make it maybe slightly more decent without trying or something. Or maybe just very misleading marketing leaking into the game itself. Either of those two would make sense, I think. This was a shameless ripoff after all.

Some things don't translate well into 3D. I think if this game's art style still retained the sprite art as seen in the loading screen, it would look less ugly.
That still wouldn't help it's abysmal controls and the main character's awful voice.
Gun I agree with everything you said. The 2D art is adorable, and the final song is pretty good IMO, but the game looks like pure crap. What is with the freaking fangs on some characters?!
Maybe they thought it'd look too much like Parappa if they kept it 3D. The fangs on some characters is an anime thing. Dunno why they do it. Maybe they think it adds "cuteness" to the characters.

The characters are ugly period.. Second, the player wasn't always playing on rhythm.. And constantly spammed the buttons like an idiot. So that's why her voice most of the damn time sounds grouchy, late and uninterested.

It started development in either 1996 or 1997, a year or two before those.

Have you tried 64 bit Mednafen? Because that's the best way to play this game.
Saturn emulation is still very unreliable, I recommend that you just get a Saturn and a PseudoSaturn cartridge.

Jangurizumu is in a literal sense, Jung Rhythm. Jung = Jangu, Jungle = Janguru. If it was spelt as Jungle Rhythm the transliteration would be "Jangururizumu" -- with an extra ru. It's likely that the intended meaning is Jungle, but it's used in this case as a portmanteau -- The "ru" at that end of jungle has been replaced with the "ri" at the start of rhythm, because the sounds are similar, and because the direct transliteration is difficult to say.
To create a similar example, it's like the difference between Jungle Lake and Junglake. The second is a (made up) portmanteau of Jungle Lake, but it appears when written to mean "Jung Lake". They've combined Janguru and Rizumu to merge where the r is.
This game feels not finished
It was obviously quite rushed, Altron wanted to cash in on Parappa. It's a really fun game to play though, it's much better than Parappa and I actually like to play it about as much as Um Jammer Lammy despite the lower production values.

The gameplay looks rough, but this game does hit a cute & quirky mark. Lighthearted & goofy with old experimental graphics, sometimes that's just what you want!
