This is a brilliant master class in backing a horse. Just perfection! At a time when a very negative horse training video has gone viral, it's important to remind people that gentle training is what is most successful, and I just feel immense pride at your knowledge and talent in everything you do with horses. I actually called my husband over (only knows about horses from watching me and paying the bills😉) to watch you work, and his first comment was, "look how relaxed Holly is, and the horse looks so content!"
@@annejarvis7002 You just made my day. Thank you for taking the time to be kind. Just got out of the hospital and am having a rough day. My spirits are lifted!!❤️
Oh my god I cant believe he has grown so much! He was such a teeny tiny little foal. And he has grown to such a super nice horse. Idk why but I really like his frame! Super well done job with him as always, really looking forward to this little nugget doing his first jumps
I love your approach to starting a young horse. He looks like he is going to turn into a beautiful horse. I can't wait to see his transformation in time. 💗
Holly thank you for sharing your trianing journey. IT was brilliant to see how different pepole trian there horse's .Take care and all the best, AND good luck with all you do. 😊😄👍👍👍💟 And a big thank thank you to ALL the family.
Wow he’s grown quickly Holly, he’s a beautiful boy love his colour and his frame is really nice. Your doing a grand job with him I bet he’s going to take after his Mum exciting hey.tfs🤗🏇🤗
OMG, they grow up so fast (not really, I guess, 3 years is quite a while, but we haven't seen much of Wiggy :) He is very handsome and very even across the top; I don't really know why but many horses seem to grow a little unevenly, usually being a bit bum high, then the front catches up. Anyway, very nicely done and demonstrated. I can't see how anyone could criticize your methods -- they are gentle and progressively instructive. I certainly didn't see any significant stress in Wiggy's body or face as he progressed (other than jumping out the first time you put him in the stall -- that must of shocked the bejesus out of you for a second when that happened -- luckily no harm or injuries -- and you just slowed things down to Wiggy's speed and ability to understand until you could progress with him again. Thank you for sharing your beautiful horses progress with us. :)
Thank you so much! Yes he’s very mature in his body for his age. Once he realised that I wanted to work with him, not against him, he started to really enjoy coming in ☺️
Great video Holly! I can’t believe Wiggy is so grown up!! Genuine question: if you have time, are you planning on increasing your handling of Delphi, Zephyr and Seren after he was so nervous at the beginning?
Great question and yes absolutely! I did a huge amount more with Zephyr as a foal (I did a video on that last year) and already we have seen a huge difference in his confidence. However I didn’t mention this in the video even though it is an important point; Wiggy was very very sick when he was younger and almost died and during this time he received a lot of medications and injections and I do think this has played a role in his nervousness ♥️
I just LOVE your training videos, Holly. You are an absolute natural. That's why all your horses have such a dream of a personality. My OTTB gelding is 22 and is STILL super anxious because the people who broke him in didn't know what they were doing and employed just pressure with no rewards. I got him when he was 6. We had some great years doing mostly dressage. Now he is a little arthritic, so what with me being in my mid 50's, I have not been riding him in the past few years, just been going into the arena to play and relax. It's created such a beautiful bond between us. If I could start all over again, I'd take my lessons from you, hands down. Thanks for posting, Holly.
Ah thank you! It can be difficult when horses have had a bad experience, much easier to work with one with no prior experience. Well done for sticking with him ♥️
Beautiful. You make it looks so easy. But really when you take it easy and don’t frustrate him or you and just be quiet. It makes me wish I had a baby…one to start myself because he’s been with you from day one. Nothing has been hard for him. He’s been turned out with mom and then friends. You’ve been the good person who gives him food and a pat. I just would love to start a horse knowing there has been no bad habits to undo. I suppose if I was lucky enough to be able to own a horse you started that would be second best! I have to admit the first backing scares me a bit but all the prep work and quiet learning already has him set up for success. Great job!
11:02 not there just being the biggest bloody jumps I've ever seen casually sitting in the background😂😂 Great job though Holly, the way you bring horses up is so incredible, and your such and inspiration!! Keep it up!!☺☺
Holly you truly are an amazing horse woman!! I just love the way you have broke and backed this gorgeous boy of yours! We used to use bailer twine too, like you say, it breaks easy if they panic, saves having a bad accident that's for sure. He really has grown up into a very smart boy, there's no wonder you are so proud of him hun. 10/10 for a great vlog Holly, so looking forward to the next one! 🥰
Holly, you really are a wonderfully talented trainer of horses and Whiggy/Wiggy is no exception. Having followed you here since your video with Megan Elphick 'Pony Tinder' onwards and although I don't ride now or own my own horse, I still love watching horse videos of day to day life of horses and foals and their training. I love learning about how people train their horses and you have a naturally calm way and manner of getting the best out of your horses. This journey is definitely going to be followed with great interest and support. Well done Holly and Whiggy/Wiggy. ❤
How is Wiggy 3 and half!? Time flies! Beautiful work with another great minded horse Holly! I could have tears seeing you on him. Stellar boy Love from California🏔️🌲☀️🩵
Awesome vlog. What a gorgeous horse. Apart from his 'Houdini' escape artistry - he picks up really quickly what you want from him (considering his age). He picked his feet up beautifully across the poles. Another stunner in the Lenehan string of horses. I bet your Dad loves him too😊. Congratulations on a great job, Holly 🤗
I love your family and horses -wow this is surely the quick version-what you do in 2 days I do in 2 mos or sometimes 2 years and I am proud of how I teach my horses and they come out dream boat r to ride I am not courageous -I am careful knowing their backs fuse at 6 years
The session on 5 min and 8 min is groundwork, necesary before lunging. By 11 min it's lunging. Many are doing saddle break without the saddle, but it make not many diference. He surprised me how he made his first jumps. I could see on Instagram he will be a talented boy.😍
This was super interesting. I'm going to borrow some of your groundwork techniques. My horse is lacking respect for my space. (Don't worry. I do have the skills to do that but have been slack.) Really well done video. Wiggy is a super nice youngster.
Super helpful video, he is gorgeous! When do you start roadwork with your youngsters? And do you use long reining at all in your breaking process? I’m going to be starting my youngster this time next year!
With what kind of bit do you usually start? Metal or also rubber sometimes? Looks nice! I’ve started about 15 horses now - one difference from your methods is that I usually long rein with lunging lines on sides on the stirrups before getting on.
Fantastic to see him doing so well. How long did he take to back? I recently started my really complicated mare who I then sent away for the backing. And when my yearling is 3 I look forward to doing this again x
Horse's don't need to be ridden with whips spurs or even bits. They need to have a good bond with the person riding them. Lots of people never use any of these on their horse's and the horse's are extremely responsive and rideable. Some rules need to change to stop the use of these things altogether. If they're not used they can't be abused.
Any tools can always be misused. What is important is to have consequences for misuse. If this horse was abused I would see a whale eye in every single one of these clips. I don’t not. Her whole point is relaxation. Unfortunately to compete where Wiggy should you need a bit to do it. Old rules, but it does show that the horse is worked with enough to have something comfortably in its mouth. The bits used here are not for pain or dominance or as a crutch for lack of strength.

your backing videos are always so chilled which shows you are doing something right - he looks so like Welbeck fab job Holl
Ha that’s the goal with them! I’m no bronc rider, so I have to get them on my side ☺️

He has turned into a beautiful colt. Wiggy is magnificent. Well done.
He’s a gelding, thank you! ☺️
@@HollyLenahanSJ I knew you had gelded him. I was thinking in the terms of baby!🤣
I love your videos because I always learn something. You do a great job of communicationing with your horses and the audience. Thank you.

Such a great trainer! I think you need a lot of mental strenght to take a horse from 0
Definitely a lot of patience! ☺️
Always a blessing when saddle introduction goes well!!❤
Fantastic I think he will be a super riding horse can't wait to see his scope over poles.❤

When do you start roadwork with your youngsters? And do you use long reining at all in your breaking process?
I’m going to be starting my youngster this time next year!
Hi from Vic, Australia, love you're work, off topic but what brand is you're coat, looks great!
With what kind of bit do you usually start? Metal or also rubber sometimes?
Looks nice! I’ve started about 15 horses now - one difference from your methods is that I usually long rein with lunging lines on sides on the stirrups before getting on.
A metal French link snaffle ☺️ yes long reining is very commonly done, I think it’s great, I just dont do it myself personally
Fantastic to see him doing so well. How long did he take to back? I recently started my really complicated mare who I then sent away for the backing. And when my yearling is 3 I look forward to doing this again x
I started working with him mid June but hard to say how long it took as there were a few weeks where he didn’t get worked at all 😂
Totally off topic.. what are those jeans your wearing when you first start “backing” wiggy?! They’re so cute😮
They’re Zara! Love them, I have like three pairs in slightly different styles
Would always recommend wearing a hat when doing in hand work with a young horse 👍
