    I watched a couple of your recent videos to see what your sound is normally like, and I have to say I prefer this video by quite a bit. The others sound too intense, processed, and boomy to me. In this one your voice sounds natural and cuts through. It sounds to me like you might be too focused on getting a certain type of sound, to the point that you've lost sight of what actually sounds good.

      As much as I agree, the Plosives on the PR40 are pretty prominent. A good windscreen of sorts could fix most of that though. Coming from a life long EV fan I think the PR40 is getting a lot of windscreen issues on reviews across the board. But now that you can find them used it makes it a really good choice as long as it has been treated well. I do like this review.

    The Heil PR40 sounds much better on your voice. It isn't nearly as mid-forward as the Electro-Voice RE20, which comes close to having too much nasal honk and is dire need of scooping out the mids via eq. The Heil PR40 really shined with its crisp, clear highs, which were much more muted on the RE20.

  • @cee128d
    @cee128d 5 років тому +50

    I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I think the Heil sounded better than the EV. Maybe that's due to the fact that I'm in my 60's and have some hearing loss, but the EV sounded too muddy with exaggerated low frequencies while the Heil was considerably clearer overall making it easier to understand what you were saying.

      I actually agree with you. I think the PR40 sounded better than the RE20. The RE20 sounds way to low and fake. The PR40 sounds more like what I imagine our voice actually sounding like.

      Comparing the two Symetrix samples, I too preferred the PR40. I would definitely tweak the settings however. I can also definitely see (err hear) how the RE20 might be preferred. And the RE20 is certainly a classic mic. Side note: I have purchased two Heil PR22 mics to replace a couple of SM58s for live sound. I have been liking the PR22s quite a bit.

    • @GuitFu
      @GuitFu 5 років тому +2

      It sounded like the RE20 needed some of the mids EQ'd out. Mids muddy things up. That could be a selling point in that you have more to work with in post, but I think the PR40 sounded better in this comparison. I have not thought that in some other comparison videos, though.

    I actually thought the PR40 sounded a little better. Sounded much less compressed. I think if you took the time to tinker with the most processing, it would sound great. But I’m not a huge fan of TONS of bass in spoken content. And it’s always a person preference thing.

    The PR40 to my knowledge was never made for UA-cam or Podcasting, it was made for broadcasting. TBH, I like the audio you got through the PR40 more then the other mic. Sounds cleaner and more natural once you tweak your highs to avoid the pops.

      The PR40 is a great sounding microphone but you need to use it the way it was made to be used , And for a start its a end feed microphone so you need to talk into the end not side on , Its one of them microphones that you need to talk into & like all microphones some match peoples vocals & others just don't .

      Tweak the highs on a mic like this and you will be battling sibilence. This is terrible mic all around. I rather buy a MXL VO-1 befor this... and in this price range.. SM7B or RE20 all day no contest.

  • @KrunoslavStifter
    @KrunoslavStifter 5 років тому +23

    What about not every mic being suitable for each persons voice? Could that be part of the problem for you? I have heard people for vocals would try various mics to find one that fits their voice. If that is the case, than it would be more of a not suitable fit for your specifically, but perfect fit for someone else. Which is I guess like so many things in life. I also feel that some of the guys on UA-cam like Mike Russell sounds very unnatural. Very processed. Just like you said. Like he is the trailer voice over guy or something. He must be doing some heavy post processing work, maybe trough some kind of mixer or something, because he is doing lot of live shows if I'm not mistaken. So he would need to do it in almost real time for live show.
    P.S.
    That all being said, listening to your results comparisons at the end. If I'm honest I must say the The Heil PR40 makes you sound more clear but with less presence. And maybe that is the problem. Maybe you are just used to the other mic, and unless your are Morgan Freeman you probably are like the rest of us, and don't like the hear your own voice when recorded. So as much as you are trying to be unbiased, I'm sure you are. It would be impossible for you not to be. I think you need some people other than you to give some input, for more balanced view.
    Thanks for the comparison. Cheers!

    Something to keep in mind with the RE20 is that it needs to be serviced (~every 3 years is what is usually recommended). $200 US flat fee. The reason is because the 3 foam pieces in it disintegrate over time. Old RE20s sometimes sound terrible because of that. You can replace the foam yourself but you need to know how to solder due to the internal design.

    Every mic works different on everyone's voice. There's a bit of trial and error in finding what fits your voice and personal preferences best. I sound like crap on the RE20 and SM7B, but the PR40 fits my voice wonderfully well. It's because the PR40's "disco smile" frequency response scoops out the mids a tad, and since I have a nasally, mid-rangey Gomer Pyle-ish voice, it reduces some of that unflattering vocal frequency to a great degree. It's one of the few dynamic mics I can use while listening to myself through earphones and be able to stand the sound of my own voice.

      I would agree with your assessment -- I would not pay to own one, personally, but I have installed a couple of dozen in radio stations that absolutely need what the SM7B offers in rejecting room noise. That "distant" sound you describe means background noise kind of fades away especially when the mic is worked close as broadcasters do. Push that thing through a vanilla processor like a dbx 286s, and by the time it gets through the station processing you've got a pretty good sound coming out peoples' radios. Not high end, but for commercial radio in today's world, just fine.

    Not a fair test when no pop-filtering is applied to the Heil as with the RE20, which typically doesn’t need a pop-filter due to its design versus the PR40. Also, you can’t go from unprocessed with one and processed with another. The 528 is a terribly harsh processor too and most people way overdrive it for its aggressiveness. I hated the 528 setup here; it has too much density and appears to be rolling off both the highs and the lows. I’m not a fan of the PR40’s because of their ease of popping, but to know that and not address it equally is a really biased approach that is not at all and apples to apples comparison. I‘d get rid of the 528, move the pop filter to the PR40 and install or turn on a phase scrambler and call it the day.

    The Heil PR40 IS NOT designed for Ham Radio although Heil does make other microphones designed for Ham Radio. It has proximity effect that the RE20, RE27N/D, and RE320 do not have. The RE27N/D is brighter and less muddy than the RE20. The RE20 probably needs a scooped EQ, the amount needed dependent on the speaker and the voice. You can flatten the PR40 The Heil PR40 has the same pop screen you have on the RE20 available in a version for the PR40. You still have p-plosives on the RE20 and you might practice with lower plosives.

    On hearing your voice for the first time - the first mic I would have chosen is the RE20 (without the processing - FTLOG step away from the processing - I'm having trouble understanding how you can make an RE20 sound so bad). You have a wonderful, rich voice that just needs a little compression and EQ in the midrange. I know this is 3 years down the track but as someone who has recorded many, many, many spoken word voices for every form of media, after hearing your voice on the PR40 - in my opinion you should swap to the PR40. Clarity, better - intelligibility, better - tone, better. Overall for your voice - a better mic.

      I am with @amrediting on this one - I prefer the PR40 sound too. I use my microphones for audiobook narration and I like the PR40 better than my Neumann BCM705. The Heil is so crystal clear and I don't just mean in the highs, I also mean in the lows - it captures the nuances in my voice frequencies at around 80 Hz and the only mics I have tried that can do that is the U87ai and C414. PR40 does have harsh sibilance as a consequences of the clarity and requires a de-esser on a "take no prisoners" type setting (I use Precision De-Ess on the Apollo or Fabifilter DS in post).

    Everyone is entitled to their opinions on their channel. But, we leaving comments are also entitled to our opinions. When you are used to compressing the heck out of your voice on a certain mic, then you get a mic that has a different frequency response, you just need to learn to adjust it accordingly. Most UA-camrs are self-taught on sound and frequencies, so they really don't understand standard broadcasting adjustments, which on UA-cam means absolutely nothing. So, when a mic like this comes along, they are expecting who knows what. Industry-standard is now a thing of the past. Stations use the RE20, SM7b, EV 320, Heil PR40, Rode, and many others, including some condensers. This review was dead at 1:49 as he stated that thinking that the mic was probably NOT going to win him over. Why do a review when you're predetermined to NOT like it? Anyway, One more thing: Many UA-camrs need to learn proper mic technique with different mics.

    You sound better on the PR40... But you should really try the PR30 is you want a thicker sound like the RE20/320. The PR30 is more ribbon-esque, whereas the 40 is more condenser. I can already tell you'd love the PR30.

    Whenever there’s over processing the natural tone of the mic gets lost in the sauce. These mics are broadcast grade and made to work out of the box without overly processed tweaking. That’s all I know. You have the industry standard of broadcast mics and I think if you take out the processing all problems will be solved. The RE-20 is the way to stay....

  • @GDub83

    I think the Heil PR40 could sound good, but it would take a lot of tweaking, the fact that the curve is so high on the hi-end makes for a bit of extra work., but if it was made for ham radios I can understand this as a lot of time you don't have any type of processing so the booted high-end would, like you noted too, help cute trough a lot of low-end noise.

    I’m getting it for amateur radio. There is a reason why you want highs over lows. Check out how SSB works. Its not about noice around you. Cutting out more of the frequency range lets the radio power go farther.
    Your nice mic would probably do great on AM but defiantly not SSB. Sadly because AM isn’t used much at all do to its short range. Side not your voice matters a lot to and yours might do very well on SSB.
    But I am disappointed that I may need to get a different mic for other things…

    I was looking for a mic and had narrowed the field to an RE320, and a couple others including the Heil PR40. I saw the video comparing the two, and elected to buy the RE320. I probably would have purchased the RE20, but I didn't want to spend all that money and then have to purchase a cloudlifter, too! I'm really happy with my decision. I didn't really think that the PR40 was a good runner up to the RE320 after hearing the comparison. Thanks for helping me confirm my suspicions. I do wonder why the Heil PR40 is rated so high?

      EV will tell you the 320 is not designed as a vocal mic for speakers, though they do show it being used by singers. There are definitely better choices and if you listen to it in a shootout it just doesn't measure up, in my opinion. There's a reason why broadcasters generally love the RE20, for a wider range of voices it provides a professional result. Shove it through some processing and you can really pop (not your "P" sounds, your whole sound). I am trying to find a link to the video where the guy from EV stated it wasn't a speakers mic, but I haven't been able to find it again. I just didn't like what I heard, and I have access to RE20s, SM7Bs, and a few different condenser mics that I like better.

    Completely agree. Low-end aside, the Heil sounds TINNY on your voice no matter how "clear" it may appear to other listeners. In a very general sense, the "modern", high, treble-heavy sound that has been so popular in the last 25 years is now undergoing a huge backlash, and for good reason: treble and high fidelity sound is over-rated and is especially fatiguing over prolonged periods of time. This is why darker mics like the SM7B have been so popular as well as the RE20. I would rather listen to a 2-hour podcast done with a warm ribbon microphone than with a modern, bright mic like the Heil. You wont even feel 2 hours of Ribbon, but 2 hours of a modern, bright mic scratching on your brain are like nails on a chalkboard. Grating and painful. They are now making mics that cover up to 30 kHz but this doesn't mean we would necessarily enjoy the inclusion of this added sound spectrum. In my opinion, anything over 15kHz for the human voice is ridiculous...and unnecessary. What also needs to be said is that everyone has a mic that sounds good on their voice but not necessarily good on others. Our voice's frequency response has to marry well with the microphone's own frequency response. If they gel well, it comes across as sounding pleasant, but if they don't gel, then it comes across as sounding unpleasant and even dissonant. This is why testing out an assortment of mics UNPROCESSED and IN PERSON is a wise thing to do before purchasing anything. A very smart way would be to rent a local professional recording studio for one to two hours that has an extensive mic locker and then try out their mics one by one to see which mics favor the frequency response (timbre) of your own voice. It would be the smartest $50 to $100 you'll ever spend, especially if you are considering investing in an expensive microphone purchase that should last you a lifetime. You then come out of the studio not only knowing which mic favors your voice but seven additional mics that also flatter your own voice. You would also have second set of ears (the audio engineer sitting in on the session) who would confirm or disaffrim your choices. My two cents.

  • @MegaJustice

    The audio through the PR40 much better than the RE20 your example. It sounds this way for "your" voice, if you look at the spectral shape change of your voice is more suited to a different mic. The magnitude and phase of your voice means you're gonna sound like Martin Prince from the Simpons on certain mics, which is why you use the term "tin-ey". Roll off your voice and EQ and you'll be amazed.

    I love your stuff. Always. But you missed the mark on this one. This is not a HAM oriented product. The PR-781 is that product.
    First off, it needs a good preamp. I’m not talking a cloudlifter. I’m talking dbx or neve or a good channel strip. Second, this mic needs a compressor. And it is designed to have a flat curve to accept some EQ.
    My podcasts have all been cut with this and with a minimum of post, but some good gear in front. 3 million listens can’t be that wrong.
    Having said all this. My favorite application of the PR-40 is as a kick drum mike. For this job, it is simply amazing.

    It could just be my ears (listening with a usb interface and beyer dynamic dt 990 pro 250oHm headphones), but at the end, the raw audio a/c test almost sounds way better than your processed and compressed bit. It has depth, warmth, and punch. Well, maybe not necessarily better because of the difference in dynamic range, but there is way more detail in the tone of your voice, especially on the low end. The compressed/processed vocals sound flat and empty. That's odd. I never liked the PR40, to be honest. My 2 favorite dynamics are the RE20 and Rode Procaster. At least for me, my voice I've been told sounds best through both of those. I personally like the Procaster since it's not as bright as the 20 and it has slightly better rejection in my current space.

  • @Tazmanian_Ninja
    @Tazmanian_Ninja 3 роки тому

    When compressing audio, it generally gets darker, not brighter. Radio stations voices go through several stages of singleband compression, multiband compression, and limiting. So what you say 7 minutes into the video, isn't correct. Rather, the high-freq boost of the PR40 will get less pronounced.
    Also, on good monitors and headphones, you voice is A LOT more sibilant on the RE20. Shockingly so, as I'm generally more of an RE20 fan than a PR40 fan.

      @@AtortAerials without knowing exactly what you are trying to do I can only give you what a typical signal chain would look like. Start with the mic. If you have the PR40 you have one of the best ones already. Next you need a booster to help lower the amount of gain that will be required for the preamp. I am using a Klark Technik CT1 and it is great, but to be honest most of the boosters made now are good for the money. Then you need the preamp. The Focusrite Scarletts do well with Macs and are user friendly. If you want to step up from that you can take a look at the Behringer UMC series interfaces. Last but not least, dont skimp on the cables. Get you a nice set of braided cables that are only as long as you need them to be. Then most important of all, take the time to learn how to use your tools.

  • @Jackcident
    @Jackcident 5 років тому

    To be honest you wouldn't see that great of an improvement just from a speaking voice changing between the two microphones, the Heil has a massive boost in the high-end and a low cut filter getting rid of anything below 80Hz where all the bass is coming from. To be honest the RE20 is a great microphone for the price but the RE40 is a much more 'niche' microphone, used for very specific purposes such as acoustic guitar or any other instruments that really sound good with a boosted high end. If you would want an upgrade from the RE20, the Shure SM7B would be a great pick up.

    For ham radio, the transmit bandwidth is only 100 hz - 3 kHz. They tune the mic so you can plug it into any radio and it will sound good on the air. The issue with too much bass on the radio is in a low signal to noise environment, the person you're talking to will just hear a low muffled mess, so they focus on the high end to cut through the noise. The thing is, literally every modern radio has some EQ, so you can make any microphone sound good.
    Honestly, I think the RE20 / RE27 are better choices. The audio sounds better to my ears, and you can easily EQ them on a radio in a few seconds, plus the RE27 is a little more articulate in the highs, but retains that smooth low end which sounds great on the air.
