Ep. 5. I didn't expect this! - Playing Smash or Pass with my Pottery

- Let me explain a bit more about this video:
Welcome to the game of Smash or Pass the Mystery Mould edition!
Smash or Pass is a game where you make a yes or no decision on an object, person, or thing by using the word 'smash' or 'pass'. The game is typically played with 'smash' meaning yeah that's good and 'pass' meaning I will pass on that. However, as we smash the things we don't like in pottery and pass the things on that we do, I will be playing it the other way.
SMASH= The piece is not good and will not be going to the next stages. The piece will be smashed hehe not like the usual way.
PASS= it's good and I will take it to the next steps.
If you have been a long time follower you will know that I have my Mystery Mould series where I unveil these moulds one at a time and decorate them. The pieces that pass this game will feature in the series when I start it up again. The smashes will not but this video series gives me an opportunity to clear out some moulds that won't fit in my new studio or maybe aren't the best for the series. Some are seriously cursed!
But wait, won't it spoil the mystery?
Yes and No! The mystery mould series will return but will have a mix of pieces from this series as well as some picked randomly like normal. By the time I get to them, I think you will either have forgotten about the piece or be super eager to see how it comes to life in the series. I am actually excited to hear your ideas on the ones we do pass on to the series as I may be able to implement them into the video and the design of the artwork. I am excited for the debates and discussions about whether I made the right decision for each mould. I am also excited to cull some moulds so I have less to move when I get the shelves for my new space.
Wait, are you smashing the moulds??
Ok, not smashing the moulds! I am smashing the cast it makes inside. I will clean the moulds up and find new homes for them that will appreciate them. AS much as I can see potential in all the moulds, I do want to focus on the ones that spark the most inspiration, have the grooviest of ideas and can be shaped and crafted in new ways. The smashed moulds are great but great for someone else who they are a better fit for. I will share details where you can get these moulds very soon.
Are you ready to play?
I will be sharing a poll after each episode over on Instagram. If you think I made the wrong decision on the pieces, come over and vote. I may bring something back if you vote for it back!
Hello! Welcome to another episode! Thank you so much for being here and all the super thanks you guys are the best!
Just a few things:
1. This is just for fun! Please don’t take my opinions seriously! I love everything but I’m being more ruthless and explaining why I am smashing things!
2. The dress is actually from Australian designer Ellie Whittaker!
3. Spoiler: the candlestick is lovely! I totally agree but by scraping off the design it would make it like a cover up tattoo trying to cover up the section where it no longer has texture. It could definitely be done, the whole piece could be wiped free from the texture but I think it just doesn’t interest me enough when I could make a candle stick holder from scratch without all that extra effort! I should have explained that in the video that the texture would play with editing the design!
4. Hope you are having a lovely week! I can’t wait to show you what’s in the next episode!
i have an idea, can you combine three different molds into one and then put it into the kilm?
Hey - I'm sorry, I'm bad at UA-cam, but in your recent short, "Do you recognize the character at the end? It looks so familiar" - that character is Kilroy - a meme character among allied troops during World War II!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilroy_was_here
Little jar would be a lovely salt or pepper jar
مرحبا اشكرك حبيبتي انا اغرمت بعملك واتمنى لك المزيد من التقدم والرقي. بعد اذنك هل تذكري ماسم السائل الذي تغمسي فيه المجسم قبل إدخاله الفرن
You could “frankenmould” the candlestick. Take the rose & ribbon off and add mushrooms or bees or those butterflies that you can position how you like them.
Agree fully with you
I thought the same thing too. Cut the rose motif of and you still have a nice candlestick base to glaze/paint or add to as you like.
I thought the same thing. It's a good piece to customize once you take of the rose and ribbon.
Yes!! So glad you said this. That candlestick is beautiful and has so much potential without the embellishment.
That or try and paint them into branches or vines or something??
The ribbon on the rose makes it look like a memorial piece
I agree. Looks like a war memorial.
Right? I thought it was a miniature tombstone at first.
ETA: she could actually make little tombstone candlesticks for Halloween. Put things like, "Here lie my hopes and dreams."
@@LoveValentineXOin memory of my adored pet rat
It looks American to me.
They used to put ribbons on everything.
When I saw it I felt like I was in somebody's grandma's house. Any. Grandma house.
They all have ribboned everything.
It gives big goth vibes to me! Cottagecore witch or something
Aww man, I love the wall basket! With your beautiful dried flowers, I think it'd be worth doing at least one!
The wall basket was one of two different sizes we made at Dona’s Molds. They were both great sellers!
You definitely need to do something with the candlestick holder but remove the rose and add some “Shelby” magic!
I was about to comment the same thing! It's such a cool shape
Yeah the way she did to the teapot mystery mould 100
Yep, I was going to say the same thing, the candlestick is a great shape for Shelby to transform into her own style.
I love how someone else/ many others had the same idea as I did! It would be a fun piece to modify.
Yes I love it, although I think the "ribbon" looks more like a shamrock. IMHO
Mould one: definate smash. Mould two: I love the candlestick, I would remove the rose and put something awesome in place of the rose - gorgeous shape though! Mould three: this is a smash - it's just not pretty. Mould 4: These look like beautiful paint pots, candle pots, or dried herb or potpourrie containers. Maybe do a candle maker collab! They are so lovely. Please do something with them!
My brain won't let the trinket box NOT be a powder puff. I love it plain which is unlike me, usually I like highly decorated stuff but this would be gorgeous to be fired as is
That’s immediately what I thought too!
I thought of a powder puff as well!
The last piece looks like a little trinket box to keep rings or earrings in. Although you could put a salt or pepper design on the side and use it on the kitchen bench.
That bunny gave me Alice in wonderland vibes, or Easter bunny. Cut those roses off the candlestick and add your own thing! I'd love the basket for countertop fruit, onions or potatoes, or even small pots of herbs for cooking. You might even be able to cut away the tall back to create a uniquely shaped basket. The pot with lid looks like a salt cellar.
I was thinking more Chuck E. Cheese
I got Alice in wonderland vibes too - the hare from the mad hatters tea party
"If I saw this at the op shop I'd leave it there" 100%
The little trinket dish could be used for salt & pepper bowls
The very first thing I thought of was salt crock. I cook with several different salts...kosher, pink mineral salt, sea salt and fleur de sal...and having a crock for each of them would be nice.
Great idea on the salt pot. I think it was a powder puff box, but I also wondered about rings and things.
Love the last one too for potential. Even just for paper clips or something on a desk. Probably a good one for kits for others to paint too. Would love to see a butterfly, bee or flower on the top. The other were definitely worthy of smash.
I think you definitely made the right decision for you! I'd have kept the wall basket but I'm not running a pottery business with a certain vibe 😂❤. And I'm so keen to see what you do with the little pot. I could see it being a jewellery container or something for a home made balm or ointment. Even a little candle with the lid as a snuffer 😂
I really liked the wall basket. The detail was really nice
Agreed. Shelby’s justification made sense but it looked real cute, especially once the flowers were in it.
Me too. She could have made a rustic basket. 😢
I agree! I love it! I would probably buy it if I saw it for sale at a shop but the size and weight and limited creative options was why I smashed it ❤
Oh ok. Makes sense. We really enjoy your content. So unique and creative. 😍❤️
You always seem to have the prettiest clothing but this dress is especially beautiful!! I can tell you wear things that truly make you happiest and that is a wonderful way of life ♥️
The new studio is so exciting! What a lovely work space! The little covered dish would make a cute salt well. I think you made the best choices!
The little trinket box is called a pin box. Traditionally it was used for hair pins, but you could use it for jewelry as well.
I just love the new studio. The lighting always looks so bright and cheerful.
The last mystery covered bowl piece would make a great coarse salt cellar painted in the "Polish" pottery fashion. Nice video!
Yes! I think Bolesławiec blue pottery is the style to which you're referring? Would look lovely 😊
I really loved the shape of the candle stick. I know that the texture of the piece and the rose make it too hard to work with. But I think a candlestick shape like that would be a lot of fun to paint on.
I think you made the right choices! If it only serves a single purpose, it's hard to be creative with it. Blank, beautiful items are a great canvas. The little trinket jar would be lovely for rings or earrings! Love to see how you work your Shelby magic on it!!!
I absolutely love the wall basket. It would be so cute if you attached those butterflies on it or some other little things.
The last one would make a perfect salt dish for a kitchen or small jewelry holder for rings and such by a sink. It’s so cute
The little round container is so cute! Could be great for rings, salt, spare keys, looks about the perfect size for those round makeup pads. So many uses, and I love the simple clean design.
Sad for the basket but understandable. Love the trinket pot can’t wait to see the results !!
I’m sad for it too 😅 I would buy that piece if I saw it! It just had a few flaws that made it not really worth my time!
@Shelby Sherrit I love the idea of the basket in a plain white bisque fire on the exterior and glazed on the interior for early spring flowers(pansies, lobelia, delicate allysum) or herbs herbs. Hung on the shady side of my fence they would grow moss and lichen on the bisque surfaces and that would make me like them even more.
The very last little pot could be so many things: salt keeper, butter keeper, candle, lotion or balm pot, little stash place.
I’ve been loving this series so much, I’m so bummed about it ending. Though I loved most the series you did of painting the pieces in various ways.
I love the shape of the candlestick! You are totally right though, the rose and ribbons have to go. Can you cut them off or flatten them? And then add bees, butterflies, mice, etc. The trinket box has so many possibilities, I can't wait to see what you come up with. ❤
The wall basket would be so cute with the mice on them or maybe the mushrooms. it would be so cute and romantic.
Oh I totally agree but it was already so heavy without any attachments!
Your Australian native flower illustrations would be so lovely in the plain jar! Maybe a comparison test with the same motifs but with matte, gloss and lustre finishes?
that wall basket could be a cute easter basket decoration! and that would be helpful for adding your own flare with some little easter eggs :D
You could scrape the ribbon rose on the candlestick and have a blank canvas just like the little pot!
Agree on the bunny and the basket. The candlestick needs the rose and ribbon scraped off and some floral decorations. The trinket box is something I’d keep on my kitchen counter for keeping my rings when I’m baking or washing dishes.
I am loving this series! So fun seeing the super weird moulds, lol.
The mould you thought looked like bird looked like screaming face to me, ha.
I kind of agree on all your decisions in this one! The last jar had so much potential, you could store cottonpads, your rings, earbuds, salt, a piece of hair, anything! In there.
My gran had a little trinket dish like that one. I believe it had violets on it and a little flower bud as a handle on the lid? She used it for bobby pins and hair ties in her bedroom.
I think the first one was a rabbit, possibly an Easter Bunny? I agree with the candlestick, it’s a tad tacky…
I think the basket could have been decorated with bees and flowers?
I agree that the last one has lots of potential!!!
The candlestick is adorable! Very Georgian, and then 90s revival Laura Ashley, and then Kawaii!
Oh I love that little box! It could make a really cute salt pot!! 😍
Love that you saw a bird!! I saw The Scream by Edward Munch. Didn’t realize when they sold these molds that they were also Rorschach tests!
Love the shape of the candle stick. Shave the rose off and add your fab designs!
I agree with all your choices! That trinket box is darling. Can’t wait to see what you do with it!
Love the last piece! I adore polka dots and would go crazy for a dotted container like that.
I love the basket! It looks like it could be used outside, on a garden wall or where you don’t have much space or a garden. I really liked it…🤷♀️🫶
The little pots could be used as herb and spice jars .. I can see them on a shelf in a kitchen ❤
I really liked the plinth. (I like parts and pieces to make other things, so I guess it is normal for me. Most of the time I expect that I would scrape the ornament right off, but I also tend to stick all sorts of sprig molded ornaments - so who knows.) I see it as a base for a candle holder, a support for the little plate in a tiered holder, the base upon which to sculpt an outsize chess set (like 32 plinths, but on the not-pawns little characters - a king, queen, bishop, etc. perched on top being ultrasilly.) I am, in fact, now planning to make a mold for plinth! (I like building molds. :) )
Hi! Love your mystery molds reveal… The small plain pot with the cover look like a beauty cream pot… and if you had the butterfly you just mentioned, it would give it a whimsical look… like a little princess pot… 🤔😉
I really liked the rose candle holder, the texture made it look like a cemetery stone and I love cemetery stonework.
I think the candle stick might be a unity candle stick (for weddings? Hence the ribbon?)
I loved the basket and the trinket box!
You look great in that dress Shelby! I admire your style a lot. You always look fashionable.
The really cute mini mice would love lovely on that little trinket box!
If the basket wasn't so heavy, they could have potentially gone on that to add small details to the rattan.
That box at the end I would use as a night stand or dresser piece to store rings or ear rings in. I loved the walk pocket. I saw lots of potential for addicting birds to the top of the basket or playing with colors of the basket. Love your content. Wish I was as talented.
I like little trinket boxes. My grandmother used to put hard candies in them that gave a special experience when we came to visit
The mortuary candlestick holder is something hopefully the right goth will find and cherish, what a cool thing
I adore the little trinket box! What's funny is that as soon as you trimmed it out, I remembered about the butterfly from the first episode (which I watched last night) and thought that it would make a great accent.
The trinket box reminds me of a salt/pepper container. I have seen small wooden boxes in this shape. I would love to have a pair for my kitchen but Im in the US. I love these videos where you show us a few molds at a time. Also, I love your fashions! I wish I could have as much personality in what I wear.
Omg I love the last pot and about died when you smashed the wall basket. I can see your little flowers on it and even a butterfly or two. But I love watching you anyway!
I’m in the USA and the opposite is how I think of pass or smash. If something is GREAT - it’s a smash. Like a smash hit! If something is passed - “no thanks, I’ll pass”. So I have to actually think if it’s a good thing or a not so good thing with your pass or smash. I love watching all your videos. ☺️
I think the last container would be perfect for salt!
Hi fellow Victorian! I just discovered you today and now I have a new favourite channel. You were right to smash everything you did, It was all the parts of the 80’s we don’t speak about now.
I’d be curious to see if the wall basket could be made into a cute garden planter. So instead of hanging on a wall. Or even hang it on a fence post outside. Love the box! Could put jewelry in it.
That little jar could hold powder, spices, jam, or trinkets. I would love to see it with a bee, mushroom, or a butterfly on the lid as a handle.
Loved the wall basket. I could see hanging it outside with succulents in it.
Love this! That trinket box would be perfect for taking off your jewelry at night and keeping it safe on your night stand. That is until my 4 year old finds it. 🤭🤪🤷🏼♀️
The little lidded container would be a great salt pot to keep handy to the stove while cooking!!
The candlestick had a "grave" or "remembrance" kind of vibe for me. A solemn piece.
I would love it if you painted flowers on the wall basket. The handle area is so large and plain. I've seen baskets painted with flower designs. It could be cute!
The round box could be used as a nightstand jewelry box or a fancy ring box for a marriage proposal
Hi Shelby! Thank you for sharing your journey I very much enjoy your videos. About the little box? I think it is a ring box. You would set them next to sinks or bedside so your rings don't get knocked on the floor or down the sink when sleeping, showering or washing dishes. Or just as a pretty box on a desk or table to hold small things like hair ties or office supplies. I like the idea of customizing them and would love to see what you would do with them.
The candle stand has such potential. I'd scrape the rose off and put on the 3D bees on it. Make some blue, some yellow with gold laster trims. It would be amazing.
The basket would make a great kitchen holder gadget thing. I.e. sponges, brushes. It keeps on the counter and you have the automatic air.
As someone who looks at everything and wonders how I could stuff a plant into it, I would love the hanging basket. But I get the hesitation, it would be heavy on its own never mind with wet soil and plants in it. Plus all my ideas for it would be super time consuming, like gingham or pastel rainbow weave.
I never would have thought of gingham or different colours of "rattan" in one basket🤯 It was just natural wood colours in my mind and I agreed with the smash, but RAINBOW weave🤔...
The trinket pot would be excellent for one of your collars where you send to another artist to see what they do 😊
The little jar could be used for jewlery! Like, put something on the lid where you can store your rings (like a tree, or a giraffe or...) , and the earrings and necklaces go into the jar. :)
Mould 1, you could make one just because the old won't last and whoever gets it has a very unique one off. The more I look at it the more I think I've scene it. I'm sure it's from an 80's cartoon. Tried googling but can't work out which mouse it's meant to be. The closest I could think of was The Great Mouse Detective. But I don't think It's right. It might also be a bad fake. So it's making it hard to work it out. Mould 2 you could definitely do something by adding something to the candlestick and getting rid of the bow. Mould 3 smash but it was fun seeing it crying and throwing up all at the same time. I had a giggle to that. Mould 4 the trinket box has so much potential. Small jewellery box, stationary box, etc. Loved all your idea for it. You could even do a creepy look with the hands and feet
Hi Shelby! The small trinket pot at the end would be the perfect size to make a salt crock for pinching commonly used salt/spices in the kitchen. We have a salt crock in our kitchen that we use all the time in a similar size. Hope this helps with another idea of things to make with it.
God Bless
I would buy the crap out of the rose candleholder thing lol the bow is lovely !
The little pot is a salt cellar maybe? Or jams n jellies or clotted cream or butter. You could carve out a little hole for a spoon maybe? Good decisions here. Well done Shelby.
The wall basket was amazing. I'd keep that one and use a glaze that doesn't come out shiny. You could use colors that are throw backs to the 1970s (sage green, peachy terra-cotta, creme, and a robin's egg blue.
I love your channel. Not sure how it got recommended to me but I am so 🙂 glad. You have such sweet infectious energy. ❤ Gonna watch another episode. I did a lot of this in Jr. high and helped the teacher pour the slip into the molds and I got to mix my own colors of glazes for painting my pieces as a thank you. 😊
I like the basket. I realize there is not much creative space to paint motifs but you could paint the basket in various colours and fancy glazes. I also think it could be fun to add a rectangle plaque for a word like herbs or mail and have it be a catch all for your letters. You could also add the mushrooms to the front or maybe a butterfly to the handle. I think it has a lot of potential
The wall basket, I can see outside in peoples gardens. Make it terracotta or even paint it bold and whimsical. People will buy it to hang on their fences.
beads, buttons and bows for someone that makes art dolls, love the little trinket box
I love this series of videos!!! I'm so sad there are only 3 left😢, but I'm also looking forward to seing the original ones!😊❤
That last little storage jar looks like a salt box for next to the stove. I see them a lot with wooden lids but super cute with the matching lid (especially if you add a mushroom topper)
I love the wall basket, you could use it for things other than flower like keys or bananas. Something where the basket is the show instead of flowers. I can image it painted in colorful gradients or a pattern of colors on the different knotches.
Ugly Bunny, definite smash, or into the cursed molds. With that crack, maybe it just needs to go into the bin. The candlestick isn't bad, but I don't love it. I suppose it could be OK as a vase. The wall basket is kind of nice, but you're right, there's not much creative you can do with the glaze, and as heavy as it is, there's a good chance that it would fall off the wall and smash. I really like the trinket box, so many possibilities!
I love the basket. I can imagine it with different glazes and dried flowers.
I would use the box for salt by the stove. Lovely with a tiny mushroom on top!
Wicker rocking basket! You could put some swing-chain to make it hold up better. If you were running a horticulture business, it would be a great side-product to sell along with potted plants, but standalone I don't think it's very nice.
The candleholder I think that you could scrape off the rose and the ribbon and put on any sort of tiny piece and have a million possibilities!
The ribbon loops on the candlestick holder made it look like an orchid to me, so I would try painting the entire shape like an orchid rather than rose and ribbon! I think the basket piece would look really cool using different pastel colors for the "rattan" strips, even just vertical and horizontal being different, but the practicality of it being so heavy makes a lot of sense as a reason to pass (and also the amount of clay you'd be using each time would add up quick). The little pot is a great base that has so many possibilities and it's definitely the winner of the episode!
The milk jugs w/ kitty from the cow family you didn’t like would make a cute lid topper on the plain jar.
The hanging basket is challenging, but not impossible. A few bees, butterflies and mushrooms can make it really fun.
I see a lot of potential in the flower basket, adding things like mushrooms or bees to help frame what's put in it.
I agree doing much with just paint would be tough unless you wanted to do something really fiddly and make each band a different colour or something, but I'm not sure it would be worth the effort.
The way you just casually picked the absolute perfect dried flower arrangement for the wall basket ❤❤❤ I was like "How does it work, what is it supposed to hold?" These exact flowers. 🤯😊❤️
Oh no! I wouldn't have smashed the candle stick. Rose/ribbon or no, it has possibilities.
The wall basket looked like a urinal, a little bit.
The trinket box was amazing
Bring back reusable makeup containers. I'm digging the last little jar, reminds me of powdering jars.
I agreed with you on this one. Even though I personally love that candlestick and the basket, they would need too much altering for you to make them work with your style. :}
Love the little jar, can't wait to see what you do with it!
The little pot is perfect as a pinch pot for salt kept by your stove for cooking!
